What a great book
Wow what a book, if you are planning in just buying one thing get this, it's well worth your time, what a wonderful read!

Like fun exciting adventure stories - Grab this book!!
This trade collects the first 8 issues (and origin story) of Marvel Comics highly contagious Spider-Girl comic book series. Why they don't publish more of her adventures is beyond me. These stories of a very likable young superheroine are thrilling to this middle-aged comic reader and should be to very youngest of readers. Forget about finding a bad review of this one - every one who reads it loves it! The stories are done in Tom Defalco's "one and done" style. This means they don't drag on and on like most of today's comic book yarns.

The stories are very reader friendly, done in a very lighthearted style. You won't find grim and gritty adult stories here, only fun stories that are apporpriate for the whole family. Highest recommendation. Makes a great present, too.

Spider Girl, Spider-Girl, I wanna live in her spider-world..
Hi, there! I'm Frank, and I'll be fillin' in for Zaggy while he catches all the arenaball action at the local pizza parlor. My review for this week is one of my all-time fave comic books: Spider-Girl! Y'know, there's only two kinds of girls I really dig: chicks who look kinda like John Denver, and chicks who look kinda like Spider-Girl™! Yep, I sure enjoy readin' the adventures of May "Mayday" Parker™ and her Spandex™-clad, crime-fightin' alter-ego! Boy, does she-- uh, what's that you say? You say you're kinda gagged out by my romantic thoughts about some fictional comic-book character? Sorry 'bout that, it was the Pepto-Bismol talkin'...

Anyway, I really like this here trade paperback collection of the series' first eight issues (& issue #0). Now I can read the stories without messin' up my near-mint original single issues! And what neat stories they are: there's plenty of family strife as young May tries to carry on the legacy of her dad (Peter Parker, the original Web-Head) over her parents' adamant protests! Throw in her duties of trying to keep the peace between two of her high school buds, the return of the Green Goblin (3rd generation) and Venom, the high-school janitor turning into a big ol' dragon-thingy that proceeds to trash most of the campus, and a few new faces on both sides of the super-powered fence, and you've got... uh... a lotta stuff to read. And a lotta really colorful drawings to go with the words, too... can't forget to mention that. But then again, it is a comic book, right? At least I remember Spider-Girl bein' a comic book. Just to make sure, I'd better take another look at the trade paperback that I've got with me. OK, let's see now... there's pictures, word balloons, big ol' fights between costumed superbeings... yep, it's a comic book all right! Won't Zaggy be proud when I tell him I figured that out all by myself!

Oops, gotta go-- my break's up, and Ro'y's got a few more tasks for me to complete. He says if I do a really good job, he'll spring for my Mickey D's value meal-- super-sized, no less! It doesn't get much better than that...

G'Bye

Outstanding Reading
Ron Rozelle did a wonderful job writing this book. It is a well written piece of history. This storm event was the worst natural disaster in U.S. history. Mr. Rozelle paid tribute to the people that died during and in the days following this storm. He also paid tribute to the survivors. There were a lot of sub plots happening during the time, an Mr. Rozelle did a good job incorporating them in just the right place. This book is well worth reading. I highly recommend it.

And you thought the Titanic had it bad.....
The events that transpired in September, 1900 have been too long forgotten in the annals of American natural disasters. Ron Rozelle has painted a picture that very accurately describes the horror and heroism that occurred when one of the most intense hurricanes virtually destroyed Galveston and claimed upwards of 10,000 lives. I discovered this book after reading the recent release Isaac's Storm, a non-fiction telling of the storm and also highly recommended. Ron Rozelle has fleshed out the story without damaging the historical accuracy and brings to us a harrowing story of the people who watched their town literally dissapear beneath the waves. Very highy recommended!

A skillful weaving of fact and fiction
Ron Rozelle's second book is a well-done blend of fact and fiction. He uses many actual people and events from the Storm of 1900, the worst natural disaster in the history of the US. He writes sketches of the lives of several characters in a flash-back format and then switches to the current time, describing the coming of the storm and the blase manner in which the people approached it. Weather forecasting was in its infancy, and no one on Galveston Island realized the full impact of the pending storm. Residents had ridden out many a storm and didn't look at this potent killer in any different way from the storms which had come before. Galveston's lack of preparation and failure to build a seawall resulted in terrible destruction of life and property. Rozelle uses these elements to create a story in which the reader learns to care about the characters and then watches the courage with which they faced this catastrophe. This is a very moving book and I recommend it to anyone who is interested in this subject.

Unsung classic -- Tells it like it IS!
I have read Dr. Smothermon's "Enlightenment" book many times and also pull it down from time to time to savor his dynamic writing style: 2-3 page chapters just sock it to you and move on. To the point. He describes the way the world ( and that includes us ) works and if you pay attention, are patient and read (and re-read) it with an open mind you will get a lot of great insights to chew on. I've read his other books and they are also good, but this one, for me, is the classic. Thanks Ron!

Winning Through Enlightenment
Dr. Smothermon has transcended the boundaries of conventional perception of Self - genius! Don't buy it unless your IQ is 150+.

An old friend
I have had this book since it was first published in 1980. It is truly an old friend. When I need to be reminded of life, or need some good advise for a friend I always find myself pulling this book off the shelf. It is one of those books that you can open any chapter, and it is meaning full in your life.I think everyone needs at least one on their shelf.

Evocative photos, Radiant colors
Wonderful book. The photography is just so compelling. I wonder how Haviv got such great exposure. Together with the rich text...While my expertise lies in the Middle East, this is by far the best book I've ever seen on Afghanistan, irregardless of the current war.

The shock The beauty The truth - War Reporting at its best
Success in war reporting can be excruciatingly elusive. Especially in military photo journalism. In America, where the vast majority takes a car to drive to the burger joint two blocks down the road, it can be a Sisyphus task to invoke deep emotions for human suffering. Of course, I am not taking into account tears - the cheapest and easiest commodity that will secure an Oscar in no time. I am talking about emotions and feelings that make one understand that there is something terribly wrong with humankind. Mr. Haviv and Mrs. Ozernoy have successfully invoked exactly the latter.

I believe that this book does not just introduce one to the roots, core and consequences of the war in Afghanistan. It laces one into the complex fiber of life that almost does not want to part from medieval. Mr. Haviv has captured an ethnos in a conflict that is intertwined with the essence and color of hard land called Afghanistan. Mrs. Ozernoy added descriptive passages that make one wish for an ability to rebel against passivity of comfortable nations.

I was stunned to actually feel uncomfortable when I was looking at the pictures of troops' movements. I almost felt dust penetrating my retina. Then my eyes were soothed by pleasing colors of Afghan fabrics that were part of a picture depicting life of women there.

There are many brilliant allegories in this book. When understood, they will help us all live peacefully.

A mind-opening experience
This book was recommended by a friend of mine, who said the book really opened her mind to the people of the country of Afghanistan and to their struggles. After reading this book, I see what she means! The pictures are beautiful, in a haunting way, and the images will stay in my mind for a long time. After hearing so much about Afghanistan on the news, it was refreshing to finally see what life is like for the real people. The commentary is sharp and savyy and went well with the photos. This is one book I won't forget because I learned so much from it!

One World Ends - A New World Begins
Here is another book about a long-feared possibility - nuclear war.

The story begins on a May afternoon in England. The sirens wail and people panic - war has suddenly broken out between East and West and the bombs are falling. Very soon the war is over, and from that afternoon the world has changed forever...

Louise Lawrence writes a convincing story about the end of an old world and the start of a new one. There are three main characters in the book: Sarah, Ophelia and Simon. Each of these characters represent their respective generation. Through these people we see how the war has affected their lives and the world around them.

There have been many stories written about nuclear war, and I think that out of the ones I've read this is the most optimistic. It was the first book that made me think that life could actually continue and even improve after such an horrific event. Apart from the obvious theme of war, the book makes you think about issues like race, religion and evolution. Although this book is aimed at a teenage audience, people of all ages can appreciate it.

One of the best books I've ever read
This is a wonderful book. It's a pity it's out of print, since it makes its availability so small. It's an extremely moving, and a very believable book about three generations of future nuclear war, one of those rare books that make the reader shift through so many different feelings that the end brings a calm sense of peace. I recommend this book to everybody.

Amazingly profound and emotional
Louise Lawrence created a masterpiece when she wrote CHILDREN OF THE DUST. It's honesty and naivete evoke emotions you never knew you had. If you read this novel, please share it with a friend.

A must for all divers...
As an EMT I found this book very educational and a great reference. All divers should have this in their dive bag. It is small and very duarable (pages are plastic). My only wish is that by owning it you could qualify for lower life insurance premiums!!!!

Stay wet...

A FANTASTIC SOURCE BOOK FOR ALL DIVERS
I FOUND THIS BOOK TO BE CONCISE, TO THE POINT, AND EXTREMELY PRACTICAL WITH REGARD TO ITS SUBJECT. IT IS POCKET SIZED SO AS NOT TO BE TOO CUMBERSOME, NICELY AND NEATLY INDEXED FOR EASY ACCESS TO THE INFORMATION NEEDED FOR THE SPECIFIC AND IMMEDIATE SITUATION. WHETHER YOU ARE NEW TO DIVING OR AN "OLD SALT", THIS IS A GREAT POCKET REFERENCE TO HAVE ON HAND (OR IN YOUR GEAR BAG)ALL DIVERS SHOULD KEEP A COPY OF THIS BOOK WITH THEM ANYWHERE THEY DIVE.

Comprehensive quick reference for first aid procedures...
The guide consists of spiral bound plastic (PVC?) pages that are printed with large easy to read text. The guide measures no more than 3.5 by 4.5 inches so it's handy enough to leave in your first aid kit, or even in a BC pocket (yes, it's waterproof).

The guide uses indexing tabs so that key areas of information are easy to find. The text is divided into two sections. Section one outlines first aid procedures for injured divers, while step two outlines common illnesses and injuries that may afflict divers.

Section one includes: Emergency Assistance Plan, Safety Assessment, Rescue Breathing and CPR, Bleeding, Physical Assessment, Field Neuro Exam, Injured Diver Positioning, and Oxygen First Aid.

Section two includes: Bone and Joint Injuries, Burns, CO Tox, Shock, DCI, Lung Overpressure Injuries, Seafood Poisoning, Heart Attack, Seizures, Spinal Injuries, Squeeze and Barotrauma, Seasickness, O2 Tox, Allergic Reactions, Thermal Injuries, and Marine Animal Injuries.

The guide is very comprehensive. However, don't expect lengthy explanations. The guide provides only an outline of steps with regard to *what to do* in these instances. Which in an emergency is what is really needed. For the explanations, you'll have to refer to another text, or better still take a First Aid course.

All in all, great content, great execution, does exactly what it's designed for.

great book on data structurues applied to game programming
I've skipped around but basically read the entire book. This book is great for learning data structures that are necessary to making a game or an engine. if you think you don't need data structures like these, you really do need to buy this book. All of the structures come with implementation as well as graphical, interactive demonstrations. Very good book overall

Very Good
...Now for the good: The book is awesome. It is well written, packed full of information about everything relating to data structures and games; and the best part: It is written in such a way so that you can apply the structures and algorithms to non-game programs as well! They should have called this "Data Structures For Anyone". This is easily one of the greatest books I've ever bought.

Don't miss this one!
The title is scary. Really scary. Data structures ... *shudder* ... it brings up nightmare images of professors who droned for hours while the class snored ... it sounds like one of those books that is so dry you have to soak it in water before you read it. It isn't.

This book is excellent. My husband thinks I'm nuts because it kept me up late reading in bed, but it's that good. The author explains complex concepts very clearly, with some humor to keep it entertaining. He's a game programmer writing for other game programmers, which is a refreshing change from the myriad books that seem to be by academics writing for review committees.

It explains all of the many ways data can be handled, from simple arrays to recursive structures, hashing, and other complex forms. Ok, any good advanced programming book would tell you this -- but they rarely if ever bring up considerations like how memory caching should influence your choice of data structures, or the impact of those choices on game design.

In addition to data structures, the author covers what you can do with them, and why. Topics such as pathfinding are covered and demonstrated. SDL, a cross-platform graphics library, is used for the demos and the coverage of that is almost worth the price of admission. (though I recommend Focus on SDL in addition)

If you're writing a game you need to know this stuff. Read this book.

A marvelous book for the "Garage Engineer"
What a pleasant surprise when I opened the book and found detailed plans for the building of a 7 clone. I've often considered building one of these machines for myself, but wondered just how a 5'11",250 lb paul bunyan wannabe would fit inside one of these machines. Well, with the plans at hand, a sheet of paper, a pencil and some quick math, I can determine how I can modify the chassis to fit my rather bulky frame, and maybe even accept a different engine than the pushrod Fords or the Fiat twincams listed in the book. I think a 4-AGE Toyota twincam would be just the ticket...E ticket. Great book, can hardly wait to get started.

Excellent Primer, but lacking a little for some builders
The book (a second edition with some additions) details the build of the Locost (Low Cost) replica of the Lotus Super 7. It's a solid primer on the subject, complete with plans for building the chassis, panels, suspension, etc. However, the book was written based on stripping parts primarily from a Euro Ford Mk2 Escort (RWD). While the car was sold in the UK, and other parts of the world, this car was never sold in America. Americans wishing to build a Locost will have to get a little more creative in sourcing parts!

Its an exciting read and I look forward to attempting my own Locost build (albeit with American-sourced components) at some point in the future.

Go for IT!!!
This is an excellent book to help you develop your own first kit car. It will guide you step by step including how to weld, where to source parts, etc. It is an inspiring book!

An excellent outline on how to build a Seven replica
What a concept! Building your own car! With this book Ron Champion outlines a plan for building your own Lotus Seven/Westfield clone. Some sections may be not as detailed as some people would prefer but overall it is excellent and informative. There are lots of builders and discussion groups that readers could join and learn from. The most valuable part of this book, in my opinion, is how to build the frame. The frame is built from square section steel tubing and welding equipment is required. Parts like the nosecone, windscreen, etc. can be fabricated or bought. There are quite a few Seven clone manufacturers around the world. The 'for as little as..' part may be a slightly incorrect but its much cheaper than most kit cars. In the course of building this car the reader will have to learn a lot about suspensions, drivetrain and engine rebuilding, fibreglass work, etc. It's almost like an outline for a course in Motor Vehicle Technology! I must say that this is one of the best car books I have ever read and if you've ever had schoolboy dreams of building your own roadster type car then you've definitely got to get this book!

Essential with one quibble
I've given this must-have book four stars for one striking omission. Smith does identify every tune to reach Chicago's WLS weekly music survey by title and artist, along with the debut and peak dates, highest position reached and weeks on the survey, along with the top songs of each year and the entire decade. There is also a section collecting the data from the WLS R&B chart that ran for a few months in late 1964. What is missing is a listing of the number ones week-by-week or at the very least some indication of how many weeks a given number one hit spent at the top. Still, this is an essential reference for those whose interest in the charts extends beyond merely the national Hot 100. I hope Mr. Smith puts out a 1980s volume to go along with this volume and the companion 1970s volume, and that some other people with access to source material get the same idea and do similar works on some of the other regional markets.

"Gotta Get It"
This is a "Gotta Get It!!". Every once in awhile a book comes along for the music fan or record/music collector that's a "Gotta Get It". This is certainly one of them. Did you love WLS in the 1960's? Are you a music/record collector? Are you a music survey enthusiast? If you answered "yes" to any one of those questions, then this book is a "Gotta Get It"!! It's very easy to use and very concise. I'm a record/music collector (and have been for many many years) and I always want to grab a book and find the precise information that I need very quickly. This will give you precise WLS chart information from the 1960 through 1969. In short, it's a "Gotta Get It" and Gotta Get It NOW!!!

Ron Smith's book rocks!
Mr. Smith has done a great job with this book. It's a must-read for any Chicagoan who appreciates our diverse local music tastes and longs for the nostalgia of what is one of the great radio markets in the U.S. WLS-AM in Chicago was indeed 'One of America's two great radio stations'. And Ron Smith is one of America's great music resources.
