Tragedy at Sea
Thanks to the authors' well balanced account of Donald Crowhurst's early years and his participation in the first non-stop sailing race around the world, this book transcends the nautical genre by far. As such, the story of a rather inexperienced sailor starting a grueling endeavor on a poorly designed and only partially finished boat contains elements from some eminent literary precursors and evolves into a true to life version of crime and punishment.

Devoid of any attempt to overanalyze, the authors start this book with an account of Crowhurst's early years. The daredevil character that is portrayed is well in line with a personality that would feel challenged by an impossible task like the one facing Crowhurst later. On top of that, the recurrent theme of a person breaking into new territory to leave tangled situations behind gives an important clue to his behavior under the stress of his sailing voyage.

Having burned his bridges and created a presumed win or lose all situation, Crowhurst sets out ill-prepared on a partially finished boat, that has already shown clear design flaws and was put together in too much of a hurry. Rather than face obvious defeat Crowhurst chooses the risk and the impossible mission of sailing around the world. Although he initially tries to make the most of the situation, he soon realizes that he will not win the race and possibly not survive a trip through the rough waters beyond the Cape. In a Shakespearean 'to be or not to be situation' this Hamlet decides to perpetrate fraud rather than admitting failure. Making up false nautical positions along the way and forced to radio silence not to give away true position, Cowhurst never leaves the Atlantic Ocean, makes some repairs in Argentina and bides his time while some competitors drop out or make real progress. Ending up in winning position Crowhurst turns himself in a real life Raskolnikov and philosophizes himself into madness and ultimately suicide.

Especially, since the approach in this book is entirely journalistic, analytical and objective this story gives a rare detailed 'play-by-play' account of someone going of the deep end. Based on a twisted interpretation of a line in Einstein's own book on Relativity, decent skills in mathematics and analytical reasoning and quite a bit of creativity, Crowhurst sets his mind on a track that degenerates in self destruction. While this is in no way the first account of advancing psychopathology, both Crowhurst isolation and hardships and the impossible task he has set himself make this a heart wrenching story. Thanks to the excellent introduction there is ample indication that both Crowhurst nurture and nature on the one hand, and Mother Nature on the other, provided him with a challenge he failed to meet.

Thanks to the journalistic approach and excellent writing this story is still gripping in a world whose technical advances have made a repetition of Crowhurst's attempt at pulling a fast one all but impossible. Thus, the portrayal of the sailor's slow mental degradation competes with the very best accounts in fiction.

Insanity, viewed from the inside
Towards the end, reading Crowhurst's last log entries, I worried that I myself might come unhinged.

This is not a sailing book -- it is a detective story about what pressure and isolation can do to the human mind. The authors do a wonderful job of assembling and presenting the evidence.

It doesn't matter at all that you know the complete story before you start: A guy's marriage and business ventures are in shambles; he hoodwinks a town into building him a bad plywood trimaran for an around-the-world race; he gets scared and fakes everything by staying in the Atlantic and sailing in circles; he goes nuts and walks overboard.
An amazing study of the human mind under pressure -- I commend the authors.

This book will shake you up. The necessary antidote is "The Long Way" by Bernard Moitessier, a lyrical story about the same race by the man who was winning it, but was so raptured by the Deep that he forfeited the prize and just kept on sailing...

This book has it all!
This is my all-time favorite sailing book. The story is gripping, the writing is extraordinary and the reader really comes to care about the characters. Although we know how the story ends, we feel the tension as Crowhurst is swept away by the forces he himself set into motion, a prisoner of pride and publicity. I am thrilled to see this book re-issued.

Why not use this as a text book?
Everything is explained so that is easy to understand, even amusing sometimes. I think a book like this would be perfect for a beginning course on project management.

Good Starting Point
I have just started using this application and this book has turned me in to a confident user. All of my departments projects will now go on to Project 2000. Ron not only explains how to use Project, he also describes the principles behind them and the common problems that can occur while trying to run a project. He also explains the importance of "iced mochas and pistachios" and other necessities.
the book is well written, applicable and easy to read. Ron's Mum should be proud :)

Outstanding Reference!
I was just hoping to find a book on how to use MS Project 2000, but instead I found an excellent reference on project management that also teaches MS Project. That is the value of this book - it teaches good project management skills, and how MS Project can help you reach your goals. I especially recommend this to project management rookies.

Can this be true? God is too cool for words!
I wish that all 6 billion people on this planet would get this simple beautiful message.

Enlightening and well-written
Ground Zero helped me to look at my life in a different way and think as to what direction my life is headed. Comments from Ken Stabler were very meaningful. Ron Cook is definitely on a mission to touch lives and wants people to know God personnally. In this book he accomplishes that goal.

An enlightening book - wherever you are in your walk w/God.
Whether you are "starting over" or just beginning your walk with God, Ground Zero, appropriately titled, is an excellent place to begin. The authors put God on a "friendly" level that we can all relate to. Anyone who picks up this book will be inspired by the message within.

TheParentClub reviews
I found this book to be truly informative, spiritual, and humorous. My Aunt always tells me that God has the answers to all our problems. Well, the good Doctor has convinced me! Dr. Eaker uses the bible to show us that God does have a plan in PMS andMenopause. This is one of my favorite quotes from the book; it is the twenty-third Psalms, from the bible, with a little Eaker touch!"The Lord is my shepherd: I have everything I need. He lets me rest in green meadows; (even with hot flashes) He leads me beside peaceful streams. (in the middle of night sweats) He renews my strength. (when fatigue takes over) He guides me along right paths, brining honor to his name. (shows me options) Even when I walk, through the dark valley of death, I will not be afraid, for you are close beside me. (depression cannot rule me) Your rod and your staff protect and comfort me. (herbs and vitamins too) You prepare a feast for me in the presence of my enemies. You welcome me as a guest, anointing my head with oil. (flaxseed, Chamomile) My cup overflows with blessings. (At least I am here to experience Menopause, the other option is not so great) Surely your goodness and unfailing love will pursue me all the days Of my life, And I will live in the house of the Lord forever. (wrinkles and all)One thing I really liked about this book is the fact that the author fully expects us to get as much knowledge on our health and to act on it. He does not expect us to use himself as our sole source of information. He is quick to point out that WE control our way ofthinking. Some restructuring of how we think could alleviate a big portion of the symptoms associated with PMS and Perimenopause. I have always thought along these lines, but never seemed to fully achieve my goals. Dr. Eaker tells us how. He shows us some very realistic goals, and how to best achieve them, by taking them one at a time! Dr. Eaker understands that we cannot make all lifestyle changes in over night, and that we need to take them step-by-step.Dr. Eaker is quick to offer advice on methods to dealing with PMS and menopause, be it hormonal therapy or herbs, diet, and our spiritual well-being. He is a wealth of information on other sources to gather the information we seek, the bible, other publications, and of course the Internet, with some sites provided.Thank you Dr. Eaker for helping me to see the things that were just beyond my view, and teaching me what I need to do to help myself through PMS and later, the glory that can be found in menopause.

A great book for women
This is a truly unique book in the world of PMS and Menopause. Ron has done an excellant job of explaining, from a biblical perspective as well as very balanced and sound medical insight, that there is a way around experincing all of the moans and groans of this changing "season" in all women's lives. If only more women knew that there were alternatives to the "it's time to take hormones" regime which seems to be so prevalent in today's world this world would be better off. He emphasizes what diet and lifestyle changes will do to improve so many of the problems associated with PMS and Menopause. He also shares wonderful and much needed information in the area of working with the body as well as trying natural herbs and supplements BEFORE resorting to drugs. His emphasis on the healing power of prayer is being proven today in many medical studies ... finally! Please, please buy this book if you care about your health! It will help you!

Menopause help!
This is an excellent book and I recommend it highly! This book is well worth the money & time to read. This is not just another "menopause" book but rather describes this transition in a positive light -- using diet, exercise, alternative approaches, & prayer to achieve wellness. I have found it very helpful dealing with perimenopause & PMS.

Releasing Harmful Beliefs
This book goes a long way in helping to become aware of beliefs that we all hold about ourselves, our families and how life "should" be. The truth is that none of us can truly fulfill our destinies until we realize the untruths that dictate our behavior and thoughts. For anyone who has a desire to learn how to unblock the energy these false beliefs stifle, this is a great step in the process.

Truly revelational
this book is so simple and factual that even the most sceptical person can appreciate the information contained within this wonderful guide book for life.

i dare you to try it for your self and not feel the weight drop from your shoulders and your feet lift from the pavement as life becomes a joy and true living begins.

Enjoy

A must read in this time of pain and fear
In moments like this when all the world is facing so much pain, fear and caos, we all search for answers, we need to know why... Well, this book not only gives you ALL THE REASONS WHY and all the answers for what we are facing on a huge scale as a humanity or as a country, here you can find how to change it all.

Because in this great book I found the only way we can do that is by healing and changing our own selves.

I have read many books in my life, but this is the first time I find a very easy and practical way to heal my wounds, to understand them and to really change my life.

I wish I had the power to put this book in the hands of each person on this planet.

Please read it!!!!

Excellent authoring of results oriented sales tools!
Ron Karr has brought together a wide range of sales tools focused around getting results. This is not a book about sales philosophy, but "in the trenches and on the street" type of sales strategies and techniques to close deals. I especially like chapter six on the customer interview process. It is really more about the discovery process thru what I call "power questioning" and I share these ideas with sales reps whenever I have the opportunity. Karr's ability to teach the customer interview process is excellent and his sales tools are bound to get results!

Ron Karr will help you become a Titan in selling!
Applying the simple, yet ingenius methods that Ron Karr describes in this book will elevate your sales career to new heights. This book has helped me in so many ways. Why have we been just getting by? We keep making the calls, booking the appointments, but our sales numbers aren't where we want them to be? Why? Because we need the focus, determination and most of all the tools to become Titans! Ron Karr gives you the tools. The Titan Principle will help you get there. It has helped me become more focused, more determined, and has helped me get through to the right people who can use my services. Ron Karr teaches you how to become a valuable resource, how to get to the descision maker, and once there, help your clients and prospects get to where they want to go! Ron's ground breaking ideas on issue based questioning and the Resource Proclamtion alone will help you get infront of more qualified and intersted prospects! What this means, is more sales in a shorter sales cycle, larger cases and seen as a valuable resource in the eyes of your clients. The best book period on selling! Thank you Ron, for your wonderful, insightful book!

A must for the new century sales people
This is a great book to re-shape the sales professionals' profile. It is an excellent guide for my business

Calculus With Analytic Geometry

Good book but NOT for a math major
I have to agree that larson's calculus is a very comprehensive calculus text. It includes a lot of material and applications.

If you are going to selfstudy calculus, i have some advices:
1 Not every section is necessary. Some sections are mainly about applications in mechanical engineerings(actually, most applications). If you are not interested in ME, just skip them.

2 Don't go too fast. If you don't have time, just skip some sections of the end of each chapters. Especially at the end of the book. Chapter 14 is quite confusing. Read them slowly, understand piece by piece.

If you are a math major, particularly pure math, this is not a book for you. You need a book that talks more about theory.

Consistent Textbook
After one confusing (first) semester of calculus using Thomas' Early Transcendentals, my school's math department switched to this text for second semester. Thank goodness! This text is much more clear, with examples that take you through the important steps of the problems. Sometimes the text will leave out a step in the example, but usually it's something from trig or pre-calc. The use of graphics in the examples are very helpful as well; the important theorems are boxed/highlighted, as are useful tips to solving the problems.

The exercise problems at the end of each section are never huge surprises. As for their difficulty, they tend to start out easy and end with the more challenging word problems. When I was confused or frustrated, it helped to go back and re-read the examples. The Thomas text's examples were extremely difficult (for us non-MIT level math students) and unrelated/inconsistent with the exercises.

The editing of Larson's text is fantastic, because there are relatively few errors (whereas Thomas' was full of them). And I especially liked the photographs and brief biographies of the famous mathematicians sprinkled throughout each chapter, because they humanize this mysterious and feared subject.

I'd say that this book made calculus less scary and much more manageable. I still had to study really hard to ace the class, but at least it wasn't because the book was overly confusing.

A practical approach to learning calculus
This is the only book I recommend to someone learning calc for the first time.

Larson's approach is practical, logical, thorough, and most importantly, CLEAR!!!!

A very highly recommended, classic medieval adventure tale
Bradamant is a rarity. A female knight in service to the Emperor Charlemagne. A respected and feared warrior knight, she is also a young woman coming of age and struggling with her beliefs. She is a lover torn between the enemy knight she loves and her devotion to her king. Fearless and ruthless on the battlefield, Bradamant is vulnerable and confused in love. With Bradamant: The Iron Tempest, Ron Miller has crafted a very highly recommended, classic medieval adventure tale of chivalry, humor, magic, treachery, and romance -- all from the perspective of a woman warrior holding her own in a male-dominated age of violence, intrigue, and treachery.

BRADAMANT is an utter delight!
Ron Miller has given us a real treat! From white knuckle action and magical adventure to the highest ideals of chivalry and downright lust, BRADAMANT has it all. And it's presented in a richly literate prose reminiscent of Sir Walter Scott but doused with a wicked sense of humor. Don't miss out on this modern classic!!

Certain to be a classic
A brilliant book destined to become a classic. Undoubtedly the best new fantasy novel of the past decade. I have read the book twice and plan to order the audio edition as soon as possible. I recommend this book without reservation--it's a must-read.

CTL: A Blueprint for Improved Health
I am a community health educator within a nonprofit health promotion organization. We utilize the Goor's Choose To Lose program as a cornerstone component in our cardiosvascular disease prevention campaign. The book provides a simple and logical understanding concerning diet and diet-related topics. As an instructor, I find the book and program very effective in educating people about the importance of proper eating habits and the effect of eating on weight and overall health. I tell my class participants that the program ensures success, the only question is their willingness and ability to follow the guidelines. Simply, put Choose To Lose works!

Healthy eating for a lifetime!
I lost 84 pounds in 13 months using this diet along with exercise. I have kept it off for more than 4 years without feeling deprived. Food is no longer the constant focus of my life but something I use to fuel my body. It's great advice and uses real food not bars and powders!
