The Cultural Conquest of Ireland

A classic in the making
Rash's work really deserves a larger audience. He has a command of language and image sadly lacking in too many contemporary poets, and he has a compassion for his subject matter that is even rarer.

Rash's work is neither too personal nor esoteric. He is concerned with recording, in verse, the lives of men and women who would otherwise be forgotten. His subject matter is COMMUNITY, as one would expect from a Southerner. In this case he writes of the Carolina millworkers in the early part of the twenthieth century who literally turned their lives off to the cotton mill bosses and submitted themselves to lives of heat, early hours, drunken sprees, boredom, and lint-inflicted disease and death.

In many ways EUREKA MILL is a novel in verse. Rash certainly has a novelist's eye for detail, nuance, characterization, and place. And there are also great affinities to the Twelve Southerner's I'LL TAKE MY STAND. EUREKA MILL provides a kind of verse correlative for the essays in that classic work. Mass industrialism has forced people off the land and out of the lives they have known for generations and has left them with...what? Alienation, bitterness, and early death.

A powerful volume, worthy of a wider readership.

This book invokes the ghosts of home!
Ron Rash has invoked the memories of my childhood, the town I left so long ago, and the memories of friends and their families. I was immediately transported to the envrirons of Chester, SC and put in touch with the people I knew growing up.

If you grew up in any one of the small southern mill villages, this book will be your transportation to the past. If you were not so fortunate, this book will paint you an accurate portrait of the times and people.

For the uninitiated, "Eureka" is pronounced you-RICK-er (accent on the middle syllable)or, at least that's how my Daddy (Southerners of my generatuion always call their male parent Daddy)always pronounced it,

Congratulations Ron, you have a winner!

A stirring book of poetry by Ron Rash.
This chilling collection of poems takes us back to a wonderful place. A childhood of mill houses, cotton fields, and cotton mills. A place where a man would burn his lungs and lose his soul. These tragic poems by my boyhood friend Ron Rash allow me to see where I came from and how far I have to go.I encourage everyone with a soul to buy this book..

Fate of the Stallion!
On the surface, "Fate of the Stallion!" is an exciting page-turner of a novel...and a story of horses and horseracing. On this level, Ron Hevener has given us a superior book for anyone 12 years old ...to 112. "Fate of the Stallion!" however, is a great book, and thus is written on several levels. Intertwining throughout is a metaphysical message that points the way to fulfillment through love and the beauty and nature of the mystical and magical. Nahgua is an Arabian stallion who runs as fast as the wind... and is worth his weight in gold. His unscrupulous owner will stop at nothing, including the health and safty of this magnificent animal, to win as many purses as possible, as quickly as possible. When Nahgua was injured, his owner was ready to put him down. Now enter Dan Marshall who becomes Nahgua's savior and protector. Why? What hidden meaning is uncovered? What does an Arabian stallion have to do with Dan's long, lost daughter? "Fate of the Stallion!" winds it's way, effortlessly, to its conclusion, and Dan's fate. Along the way, the reader is captivated, energized and drawn into a story that teaches that dreams can and do, come true. This is a magical book the whole family can enjoy and discover that,"You'll find the right help when you have to."

"Fate of the Stallion!"
I found this book interesting and fun to read! It was exciting (right from the opening hurricane scene!) And it easily carried me along on the back of beautiful Arabian stallion, (right behind Dan Marshall.) The books character's are colorful, crafty, humorous and warm. I especially liked the mystical spirit of Walter Farley, who appears throughout the story with wonderful philosophical input. This book is insightful and important with some surprising twists! Especially at the end! I hightly reccomend it! *****

"FOLLOW YOUR DREAM!" *~*~* "FIND THE WAY!"
A classic for every family, "Fate Of The Stallion!" is every
bit as wonderful as everyone's favorite, "The Black
Stallion". It is an EXCEPTIONAL book of hope and inspiration for
readers of all ages ... It's written with highly intense personal
emotions and is full of very valuable messages. Hang on tight! Once
you start reading this masterpiece, you'll be caught up in the race
and won't stop until you reach the finish line. You will be captivated
by the drama of Arabian horse racing, intrigued by the presence and
advice of Mr. Farley, motivated by Dan's great courage, inspired on an
individual level to "FOLLOW YOUR DREAM!"..."FIND A
WAY!". No matter what! Mr. Hevener tells us that having hope in
our eyes and love in our heart *IS* "the way".

A hidden world in the Gila
This book is simply the best available for southern New Mexico, and one of the bext of its type. Very comprehensive. It's clear that the author has actually been to and caught fish at the many remote spots he describes, over a period of many years. If you are even thinking of visiting the remote mountains of southern New Mexico, this is for your bookshelf

A great book for a beautiful area.
I have been a fly fisherman from time to time over the last ten years or so, and I lived in the Southwest from 1977 until 1998. My family returned to the area for a vacation and re-visited the Gila National Forest last summer, equipped with a lot of fishing gear and Rex's book. FFSNM seemed to bring the Gila's trout streams to life. This book is a kind of "sleeper'. Not many people have read it, but it's a good example of quality outdoing quantity. A lot of really good things in this world, like this book, remain overlooked, but that's probably fortunate in this case, because, like Rex Johnson, Jr., I liked having the Gila all to myself.

Extremely informative, and a good read.
This is a great book. It's as much a piece of literature as a book about fishing..

The Best Cook Book Ever!
I recommend this book to anyone who is looking for instructions on eating great food that is quick and easy to make. Even if you are not a vegetarian, "Friendly Foods" is the a great gourmet helper. My husband is not a vegetarian and he is crazy about the recipes!

Delicious and Delightful
My husband and I (both vegetarians) were lucky enough to be on a cruise in 1998 on which Mr. Pickarski was our chef. I had more delicious food during those six days than I ever had before or since! After we got home I ordered every Pickarski item I could get my hands on, this book included.

Bear in mind, these distinctive, gourmet vegan recipes aren't your everyday fare. This is the book you'll want to pull out when you need to wow your non-vegetarian friends. My favorite is the Chocolate Cream Couscous Cake (page 220). Vegan or not, this is one of the most elegant and delicious desserts you can ever hope to taste. Happy eating!

Perhaps the best gourmet vegan cookbook on the market!
Many times I have eaten vegan recipies which are not only bland but unimaginative. When I bought friendly foods over 7 years ago (when I was just turning to a vegetarian lifestyle) I thought I had died and gone to heaven!

The recipies in here are not only nutritionaly well balanced, they are easy on the stomach, delicious and rather easy to make! This book was one of the few that convinced me that eating a non dairy/meat diet would not only be easy, but very satisfying.

Some of the best recipies in this book are the Carob Cake with the Peanut Butter frosting, Tofu Spinach Pie, Hazelnut Glennie and the Carrot Pate.

This book is not only well versed in well tasting vegetarian/vegan recipies, but is chock full of good nutritional advice as well. Although I have not tried all of the recipies in this book, every single one I have tried has been relatively easy to make and the ingredients are relatively easy to get at your local helth food store (and some more enlightened grocery store chains)

From the Heart of Racing
INCREDIBLE! As a relatively new fan to NASCAR I feel like I have been brought up to speed! This book is a must buy. I love the stories. They made me laugh and get a little choked up at times. It's a very easy read and the cd that comes with it is amazing. Dale Jr.'s tribute to his dad is incredible and the Petty's are amazing. I want more!

you have to read this book!
This book is great and the CD on the Petty's is just awesome. It will make you cry all the way through it. I loved it and would recommend it to all. God Bless the Petty family and Adam.

A true look at NASCAR
This is an excellent book, with stories from various drivers, fans, writers, and other motorsports personalities! Many will make you think, laugh, or even cry. Inspiring images of faith along with a true look at the NASCAR personalities you thought you knew, make this a must-buy!

Awesome book!
I was given this book while going through a challenging illness. This book provided so much hope and comfort to me! I looked forward to reading it each night. The author repeats the same message in a very clear, realy manner so that you finally get it that God NEVER leaves your side! I love this book!

The message of book is as comforting as it is challenging
God Works the Night Shift is a book that I will purchase for others. I found it a comforting reminder of Christ's profound love for me and an inspiration to obey a God whose primary concern is for my ultimate good. I will read it again and again, and regard it as a trusted companion. Founded on a deep and broad understanding of the Bible, its pages are compelling, humorous and deeply touching. It had a healing effect on me and I know it will on others.

Need A Lift Me Up-Feel Good Kind Of Book?
"God Works The Night Shift" has got to be the best book I have ever gotten. The Author "Ron Mehl" puts this story in such an easy way to read and understand what God does for all of us. It is a believable book about how many of us do not see God working in our lives. We might be struggling everyday and crying to God asking, "Where are you God?" Well "Ron Mehl" shows us where God is and the way he writes is so down to earth. It is not at all preachy and he has a great sense of humor throughout the book that just makes you NOT want to put it down. I finished it in 2 1/2 hours. He comes across as an ordinary person with an ordinary life just like us. I have read it over and over again and If life has you down and you feel alone, scared and feel like no one is out there. "Read this book!" You won't be able to put it down, and when you do you will feel a difference. A sort of peace like "Ok! I guess God is working the night shift!"It is a good feeling! Irene Giorgio

Beautiful work of a master artist
Gods and Generals: The Paintings of Mort Kunstler rivals its previous companion book to Gettysburg. Kunstler tells the story leading up to the battle of Gettysburg using his masterful brush to translate history into color paintings. The text and the paintings weave the tale of how America eventually tore itself asunder in the Civil War. Its an excellent collector's piece and great introduction into the Civil War.
I also found Kunstler did not paint as many movie scenes in this book, instead capturing the actual historical looks of these "Gods and Generals" of the Civil War. Any lover of history or military art will appreciate his attention to detail and riviting scenes. Enjoy!

A Beautiful Book of Beautiful and Educational Paintings
Mr. Kunstler has provided us with another book of his arrestingly beautiful paintings. Art, of course, is largely a matter of taste and proverbially in the eye of the beholder. Mr. Kunstler, however, even from as objective a standpoint as possible, has no peer as a chronicler of the Civil War. I have been interested in that period of history for about half a century, but it has been Mr. Kunstler's paintings over the past dozen or more years that have brought that war to life for me, and, I am sure, for many others. Although he is a prolific artist, he never compromises with quality, and the quality of his work is unsurpassed.

The subjects of Mr. Kunstler's paintings are invariably interesting, and he does not like to paint scenes or events that have been done previously by other artists. This book is the companion to, and illustrative of, the events and people of the novel "Gods and Generals" by Jeff Shaara, soon to be made into a motion picture of the same name. It follows four exceptional soldiers through the first two years of the war: Robert E. Lee, Thomas J. "Stonewall" Jackson, Winfield S. Hancock, and Joshua Lawrence Chamberlain.

In this book, there are many new paintings not yet published elsewhere, but whether you are an old Kunstler aficionado or newly introduced to his work, you will find this book unequaled. The reproductions of the paintings are eye-catching, displaying each painting in vibrant, striking colors, true to Mr. Kunstler's originals. I say above that his paintings are educational, and so they are. I urge you to look closely at every work of art. If you do, you will not only see an astonishing amount of detail, but also learn much about the people, the times, the objects people used, and the war. Again, we have Mr. Kunstler's constant striving for perfection to thank for paintings which are correct in every detail. He is the quintessential perfectionist, who painstakingly researches every detail, no matter how small, to provide his audience with true, as well as beautiful, depictions of people, places, and things. He consults with knowledgeable historians, such as Professor Robertson, who wrote the text for this book, on even such matters as the weather on the particular day that he wants to depict in a painting. All of the accouterments are true, as well as the animals, the uniforms, the weapons, the landscapes, the battlefield situations, the lighting -- everything. Rarely does one find, in one individual such as Mr. Kunstler, artistry to the point of genius coupled with an unceasing demand for perfection in all of the details of his art.

I admit that I am no connoisseur of art and that I can claim no expertise or experience in art. Even someone such as I, however, can at least partially appreciate the artistic techniques used by Mr. Kunstler. His positioning of people, animals, buildings, and other objects to lead the observer's eye to the main subject of the painting, his extraordinary use of light to play on this or that subject in the picture in greater or lesser brilliance in order to accentuate or subordinate that subject, and his use of color, always precise, to delineate bright sunshine or dark shadow, or to emphasize or minimize, are all techniques that even such as I can note and admire. His paintings are so life-like as to defy the observer to differentiate them from photographs. But no photographs could depict such wonderful color and the precise instants in time which Mr. Kunstler so deftly chooses to picture.

Mr. Kunstler has, with every book he has introduced, been able to obtain the very best in historians/commentators to draft the texts. He has obtained the services of, for example, Henry Steele Commager (for the book "The American Spirit: The Paintings of Mort Kunstler"), James I. Robertson, Jr. (for "Jackson and Lee: Legends in Gray," "The Confederate Spirit: Valor, Sacrifice and Honor," and the current work), James M. McPherson (for "Gettysburg"), and Dee Brown (for "Images of the Old West"). Dr. Robertson's text in "Gods and Generals: The Paintings of Mort Kunstler" is, as always, the perfect complement to the paintings. As with Mr. Kunstler's art, so also with Dr. Robertson's narrative, one can learn much, whether one is a novice or an experienced hand.

Thus, whether you are a "Civil War buff" or simply interested in exceptional art and edifying prose, you will enjoy this book (and you would do well to consider obtaining Mr. Kunstler's previous books, named parenthetically above). You cannot go wrong with the team of Kunstler and Robertson.

For the beautiful art, alone...
This book is worth 5 stars!! My 8 year old son is just beginning to discover what it means to be born in the south. I want him to have an accurate picture of what the civil war was all about. It is hard to find civil war books with enough pictures to keep him interested. This book has plenty of high quality art for him to see and includes text that we can read together! I highly reccomend it based on those gorgeous paintings.

My Favorite Book
This book is my bible and I learn and understand more of the wisdom within everytime I pick it up. I have already given copies to two of my dearest friends. I am now buying a third copy to give to another. I recommend it to everyone who is a practising counsellor or psychotherapist.

Life Changing Book
I highly recommend this book if you are interested in compassionate, client-centered approaches to psychotherapy, whether as a client or practitioner. A remarkable contribution to the art of psychotherapy as well as a soothing and uplifting read. An interest in eastern spirituality is not necessary to enjoy and appreciate this work.

A book for all counselors in training
In using this book as an extra reading for a Counseling Strategies class, I found that the authors brought to life client-centered and gestalt philosophy and techniques. In addition, a number of students decided to seek counseling themselves to experience the process of unfolding and self-discovery. The best part of this book is the emphasis on the power and courage of the individual client and on the catalyzing and compassionate role of the therapist who guides the individual toward trusting his or her own process as he or she moves toward greater wholeness and healing.

Jammin' Jambalaya
I actually got this book because of the jambalaya recipe that I tasted at a party. As it was cooking, I read the accompanying writeup on the fireman who gave the recipe and ended up reading the entire book. I thought the stories of the fireman added a nice touch. Recently I gave a copy to a firefighter friend of mine and he was delighted (which was definitely a first). There needs to be a "More Firehouse Cooks", so I'll have a Christmas present for him next year.

Hot Stuff, too!
I stole the above title because it's perfect. I've only had time to try a few recipes, but so far, so good (agree with the above recommendation for the Jambalaya on page 150). It's the stories of the firemen that make this book so special-like the stories about the chefs in Top Texas Chefs: Favorite Recipes. Great gift idea!

Hot stuff!
This is a great cookbook but a lot more. The stories of the firefighters, their families, how they feel about their jobs, were funny, moving, inspirational, and more. Get this one even if you never intend to enter another kitchen. (The receipes are great, too. Check out page 150, for sure.
