A benchmark anthology of essays and insights
Creating Learning Communities: Models, Resources, And New Ways Of Thinking About Teaching And Learning is a benchmark anthology of essays and insights representing a wealth of outstanding commentary from a variety of contributors on educational issues and innovations ranging from homeschooling and distance learning to autodidactics and learning clubs. An outstanding and highly recommended addition to academic and professional reference libraries, Creating Learning Communities can help educators and policy makers to develop true learning communities beyond the traditional borders of brick & motor buildings, conventional class room structures, or anachronistic curriculums.

Envisioning a world without schools
As this book says it is time to think outside the box. While most educators think that changes must be made in the education system they are stuck in the school/teach/educate syndrome. 'A Coalition for self learning' believes that social needs, brain research and new techniques and technologies demand a radically different learning system, and makes it possible. And, that is happening with the proliferation of homeschooling and the emergence of "cooperative community for life-long learning centers" that are forming the foundation for a radicaly different society.

A "must-have" for educational futurists
Ron Miller has collected some of the hottest new ideas and models for the educator, student or parent looking for a way out of current institutional education.

The Death of an Adult Child
This book is a wonderful resource for those parents who have experienced (or are experiencing) the death of an adult child--only those who have gone through the same emotions can offer such comfort and hope. It is also good for family members and friends who are trying to help the parents through this difficult time (as well as themselves).

Expressive and Emotional
This book approaches a difficult subject most people are afraid to address. It relays emotional and heartfelt experiences of parents who have lost an adult child. Written in a collage of narratives, the reader becomes comforted and supported by those who bravely share their grieving and healing process. It is a wonderful book and I suggest it to anyone who has, or is familiar with anyone who has, experienced such a loss in their life.

Death of an adult child
Parents who have experienced death of an adult child, will find help in their everlasting grief from the sharing of parents who have had this happen to them.

Back to Reality
I have, forever it seems, truly struggled to regulate my weight, engaging in a never ending battle with the scale and my capacity to endure semi-starvation and related forms of deprivation (e.g., grapefruit one day, tomatoes and steak the next). Eating has become over the years I realize, a guilt-laden contest in which I have attempted to outwit my body in a tense match of caloric intake vs. pounds accumulated. In my quest for the downward trend of numbers on my scale, having subjected myself to more than my share of fad diets over the years, I have nevertheless always been aware on some level, of a tiny nagging voice within my consciousness quietly but persistently suggesting that my manner of proceeding has been less than healthy and quite possibly even dangerous in the long run. It seems that I had nearly forgotten, except for that tiny voice, that the purpose of eating is to nourish oneself. I have recently come upon the Denburg's comprehensive, well-researched and enormously sound book, "The Diamond Diet". The book has impacted me greatly, providing the appropriate perspective and direct guidance necessary to feed myself and my family in a realistic and yes, healthy manner. I have responded to the wise counsel presented in the Denburg's book by taking a hard look at my food lifestyle and making some significant changes in how I shop, plan meals, provide snacks and in general think about the entire concept and process of eating. Quick weight loss? No. However I trust this book and the constructs presented about both exercise and eating, and view the contents as a lifestyle plan which feels right, balanced, sane and nurturing. It's about time. Many thanks to the Denburgs.

The Diamond Diet
I discovered this book while searching for natural way to cope with arthritis and several other age related health problems. Costly medications only seemed to exacerbate my condition by adding additional negative side effects. And I dreaded surgery with its promise of a cure, having seen so many disappointments with friends. My unhealthy physical state was making me an unhappy person and affecting all areas of my life. But I knew I couldn't just think the troubles away so I started looking for practical help. I needed some gentle advice and something I could trust, not more harsh medical treatments or another expensive "quick fix." Since I was overweight, I started looking for a diet plan. That's when I hit on The Diamond Diet and it has made all the difference. For the first time, I have found something non-threatening I can work in my own way. And it has become fun believing I can change the entire style of my life for the better as I get healthy. Unlike so many other diet programs, this one gives an honest appraisal of the field up front along with the real scoop on vitamins and food additives, and it combines a number of basic lifestyle activities - healthy eating, exercise, and mindful living. I feel the authors are talking directly to me as a person, providing valuable information, encouragement and support, but allowing me to change my way of living gradually. Their guide offers me a lasting alternative rather than a fast prescription that I know won't last. I now keep the book at my bedside and find something interesting to set my course by each day, one day at a time. When I have a question, I go to their friendly site on the web.

Cutting Through the Confusion and Polarization of Diet Mania
I've been confused for years by all the conflicting claims of what diet is based on reliable science of how humans should eat and the best way to lose weight and keep it off. How can people be expected to understand and decide if they should be embracing or avoiding whole groups of foods; and even if it's true that you can lose weight by eating according to a particular plan, is it healthy in the long run? Is it something you can sustain as a lifestyle change, and not just in short bursts? Is it something you can be proud of, or feel like you've found a loophole in the system? This book is the right balance of education, inspiration, moderation, and calculation. It presents a wealth of information in a friendly way, leads the reader through a very do-able process where you not only lose weight, but understand nutrition simply and clearly. It helps the reader find the common denominator between the protein diets, carbo diets, and so on; de-bunks the misleading claims and uncovers the roots of where diet gurus have been over-enthusiastic, confusing the public in order to claim a truth. The book is a living document, tied into the authors' website, which creates a virtual support community and provides ongoing feedback and encouragement. The whole program is a balance of theory and practical exercises ,building an important intellectual foundation as well as a day to day lifestyle which supports eating sensibly for a lifetime. Disease and being overweight are conquered along the way.

Extremely Great Book!
I throughly enjoyed this book! Albeit a bit pricy, but very well written, and thus worth the money. With me being former Military, and Gay, I was very interested in this story of being Discharged from the military for that reason, and how they would handle it. The author put it on the table perfectly!

This is the story of 4 Naval soldiers that are stationed in Australia, and for various reasons, all must be shipped back to Treasure Island, CA (between San Francisco and Oakland) to be discharged. All 4 of these soldiers happen to be Gay, albeit not the reason they are all being discharged.

The story follows the guys through the month or so long journey from 'discovery' to discharge. We get to know each of the individual's stories in great detail. We get to see several sides to each of the main 4 characters, what makes them tick, what ticks them off, and their true feelings in regard to being Gay, being in the military, being found out, telling family the truth, and how they react to being 'stored' at Treasure Island awaiting discharge.

I was humored that the author pointed out the irony of the military, in their 'wisdom' (cough, cough) would send their gay servicemen to Treasure Island (San Francisco) to be kicked out. Talk about putting a kid in the candy store alone....

You will throughly enjoy this book. It made me laugh, it un-nerved me at points, and really allowed me an insight into lives of servicemen caught under the 'Dont ask, Dont Tell' rules. My hats off to Ron Belpedio, the Author, for his fine work!!

Mike Heine ('winterstone')

Congratulations!
This author has always had a knack for seeing the interaction of humor and pathos in life. All of that is reflected in this novel.

David Sedaris meets Jack Kerouac
First off, this is a funny, laugh-out-loud book (Sedaris), but it also has a stream of conscious depth to it (Kerouac) that most gay novels ingore. Both confessional and compelling, I couldn't stop reading it - but then I've always had a weakness for books with lots of short to-the-point chapters moving the plot along like a television show. It's a simple tale, told honestly with humor, an entertaining outlook, and a hint of voyeurism. Hysterical and insightful at the same time, it should be required reading for all lawmakers opposing gays in the military because it proves that normal campy gay people do exist in the navy. I'm sure anyone with compassion and a sense of humor will like this book as much as I did.

Adventure around every corner.
I am the younger brother of the author and all our life he has had the ability to expand on the truth. His creative mind has come up with a great story. I'm not much of a reader but to humor him I started reading his book and had a hard time putting it down. I laughed, I cried and I think I could even smell the food cooking in several chapters. There is adventure in every chapter. I can't wait for his next book.

Dogs are People too was a great book
Dogs are People too was a great book. Once started I could not put it down. The story is believable. Who hasn't thought their pet could talk to them. I can't wait for the sequel. Parents should take note and try not to force their children into the life they want.

I thought the book was great!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
I give "Dogs are People too", two humbs up or should I say two paws up. It is a delightful story about a boy and his incrediable bond and understanding of canines. It was a exciting book that I couldn't put down. I think it is a great book that everyone should read.

Powerful book, even for a tough skeptic like myself.
Before I compliment this book, let me state that I didn't buy everything in it, particularly when Mr. Scolastico indicates that he believes in past lives. Nonetheless, this book is filled with depth and brilliant insights into human emotion. Many of these insights are not particularly obvious and are explained in ways that we can really relate to. A sense of calm came over me while reading this book and I firmly believe there is a tremendous amount of wisdom within its pages. Before reading this book I was doubtful that I would get anything out of the book (it was recommended to me). Boy was I wrong. I learned more about the true relationship between stress and sadness from this book than any psychology book I have ever read. I highly recommend it for people that want a fresh perspective on life and death, even for those of you that are agnostics or atheists.

A favorite
I have shared this book with both my son and my father. It transcends religion and presents the concept of attunement in an easy to follow format. It also helpful information about healing emotion.

A gem of a book
This is a gem...in fact, I have all of Ron Scolastico's books. This one is wonderful and inspiring information for the sophisticated seeker who is looking for the next step. I highly recommend it.

a great introductory treatment of linear algebra
for many students, linear algebra is the gateway to abstract mathematics. larson and edwards have created a textbook that gives students the "big picture" of linear algebra, before delving into the details.

A great book for self-directed learning. Plenty of examples, extraordinary graphics.

Great textbook!
I'm a Computer Science major at Converse College, and I found this book very user-friendly. (BTW, I have a used copy to sell. Email recrandall@hotmail.com)

An excellent introductory treatment of linear algebra!
I am a graduate student at Queen's University, Canada, and my research work is heavily involved with linear algebra. I had looked through many books on this subject, and found this book most concise and sufficient in exlaining the fundamental theories of linear algebra. I recommand this book to those who are just starting to discover the beauty of matrices.

A Magnificent Reference
I found this little book to be a magnificent reference in that it is immediately usable in the understanding of people. It can be put into immediate use once you read it and that is one of the appealing characteristics about Hubbard's work, it is usable. Not only that, it works and it is simple! Anyone who works with people in any fashion will find this book extremely useful.

INSIGHT INTO PEOPLE
I learned more stuff that works from this small book than in the tons of psychology/self-help books I've read.

A new idea about human behavior.
A "ranking" of emotions and definitions thereof. Describes how to move somebody from apathy to enthusiam fairly easily.
