preparation
In 1990 I found a small mixed breed chihuahua/daushaund mix.In 1992 while on vacation at the beach went into a shop in search of sun screen lotion and browsed thru a table of discounted items. There was a book with the image of my dog Francesco on the cover.I read it and it brought tears to my eyes.Although Francesco was very young at the time I knew the day would come when I ,like "Mommie" would have to face the inevitable.Francesco died 2 weeks ago and I took the book "A Little Dog Like You" off of my bookshelf and read it again.
I was saddened to learn tonight that Rosemary Sutcliff had died in 1992 as I wanted to let her know how her book helped me to prepare for one of my greatest losses...Rosemary is with her Pippin I am sure .

Beautiful book, heartfelt story
This little book is going to be (if not already) a well-sought after collector's item for any dog and/or book lover. Beautifully illustrated in a classic style, the book brings out the best about the love shared by dogs everywhere and their owners. It's a book about a little dog whose bravery and loyalty to his owner brings them together again. I have chihuahuas and I am involved in chihuahua rescue, so this book is especially meaningful to me. It's the only book I know of with a chihuahua as a character. But the story is universal and simple enough to be shared with a child. They don't make books like this any more.

A Little Book About A Dog
If you've ever loved a dog, this book is for you. This slim volume is written and illustrated so that even a very young child could appreciate hearing it read, but any adult who considers himself or herself a dog lover will be enchanted with it. The book follows a dog through its life and, sadly, to its end, but the story doesn't stop there. There is so much love between the author and her dog that the author is certain she hasn't seen the last of her pup -- and she's right. You may need some Kleenex tissue for the final pages of the story, even though the book ends on a decidedly high note.

fine short fantasy collection
Fans of short fantasy will appreciate this fine collection consisting of seventeen tales, all except one written in the last seven years. The stories run a wide gamut (as expected from an author who has entries in several genres) in the field so they are aimed more at a generalist. Each of the contributions is well written and fun to follow, as in most cases the fantasy elements seem real in spite of the relative size of the story. However, "The Prince of Exiles" was particularly fascinating as the narrator tells the tale of his family in Ancient Britannia especially once the reader understands who he is. Rosemary Edghill keeps her audience on the edge of their seat with this delightful anthology that will send fans seeking her novels and other works.

Absolutely wonderful
I've already tried once to write a review for this terrific book, "Paying the Piper at the Gates of Dawn," but maybe it was swallowed up somehow.

No matter. This is a terrific, fabulous, absolutely wonderful book, in which just about every possible fantasy genre is represented, and quite a few different styles are, too.

There's "The Maltese Feline," humor and a detective send-up, all in one. There's "The Intersection of Anastasia Yeoman and Light," which shows how one woman's life could have been -- and could have been _again_. Very, very powerful, as well as oddly moving.

And yet, there's more!

There's "The Fairy Ring," truly an inspirational love story, as well as an unusual quest story/fairy tale; the Aesopian "Two Gray Horses," in which a young man does the right thing and is rewarded -- but not as much as you'd think; "Scandal," a story of swords and men -- but not quite the way you'd expect; and even a Boscobel League story, which harkens to the world "The Shadow of Albion" set up, where Silver Stick in Waiting makes the biggest mistake of his life, all to prevent his King from marrying a totally unsuitable woman.

And there's much more than this!

Let me put it this way; since receiving this book, I have read it four times. I've enjoyed it more every single time. And I think Ms. Edghill is one of the best s/f writers extant.

Go read this book already!

A story to please every appetite
"Paying the Piper at the Gates of Dawn" is one of the best short story anthologies I've ever read -- and every story here, every delightful one of them, has been written by one woman, Rosemary Edghill. It's very difficult to believe at first that one person can write in so many different styles, as there are quest stories here, fantasies, humorous fantasies, alternate historicals (of a sort), and many more. The earthshattering fantasy of "Prince of Exiles" and "Scandal" makes way for the more lighthearted "The Maltese Feline," stopping for the extraordinary fairy tale "The Fairy Ring." And there's much, much more; the Aesopian "Two Gray Horses," the alternate-history (personal) "The Intersection of Anastasia Yeoman and Light," the alternate-history overtones in "May Eve," and even a return to the Boscobel League (featured in Ms. Edghill's novels with Andre Norton, "Leopard in Exile" and "Shadow of Albion"), where Silver Stick in Waiting makes the biggest mistake of his career, in trying to prevent . . . well, you'll see. Ms. Edghill's writing career has spanned several genres, including Regency romance, science fiction, fantasy, mystery, and probably more I'm forgetting at the moment. And her short story collection reflects the same broad-based appeal as her novels, being as there are several wonderful stories almost too tough to classify except as the general, "Read this!" Now, I've read this collection at least four times so far (one of these days, I might share, but not just yet), and I enjoy it more every time. All I can say is, "Read this book! You won't regret it!"

An Excellent Novel
This is a precusor to some of the more recent historical fiction by authors such as Margaret George. I picked this up as a kid in the used bin at a bookstore on Amsterdam Ave. and around 118th Street (near Columbia) for about 50 cents in 1978. This book was my first exposure to the Norman Conquest, but from an English point of view, and I re-read it once or twice in the next few years. Just recently, I picked it up again to see if it was as good as I remembered, and it stood up well. There are now many more sources of historical record regarding the Norman Conquest that are not weighted with the natural prejuicide of the conquerors (example: David Howarth's 1066 - The Year of the Conquest), but at the time, R. Sprague's book was an engrossing and entertaining precursor to those works.

Gold star!
This is a really terrific book. The main character is fictional, but many of the other characters are very much real. I liked this account of the Norman Conquest, especially the way that Sprague depicted King Harold II's personality. An all-around good book.

A wonderful account of life during the Norman conquest
Red Lion and Gold Dragon by Rosemary Sprague is a well-written, warm account of life growing up during the Norman Conquest for young readers. It is the story of Aelfred Ansculf, an young Englishman who had everything until his baron father married a Norman. From that point on, everything will change for this young heir.Throughout this book, Aelfred will lose nearly everything, but in the end, he comes to know the true meaning of sacrafice and true love

Great Reading, Great Application
This book has been such a blessing to me as a wife. It presents numerous ways to strengthen your marriage without making you feel like you have to follow a certain formula, and, most importantly, without making you feel overwhelmed. It explains the importance of treating your spouse as you would treat a friend, how to handle conflicts, and how to really listen to your spouse. The ideas in the book can be put into effect immediately, with just the little things of everyday life.
The best aspect of this book is that it's not written in a condescending, clinical, tone. The authors share their own mistakes and mishaps through marriage, as well as stories that others have gone through. You can laugh with these stories, take their advice, and even be grateful for the person your spouse is. All said, it's a wonderfully uplifting and encouraging book.

Rock-Solid Marriage Review
This book contains superb practical advice. It is the Time Life Handyman book on marriage, and emphasizes fundamental common-sense ways to be a good spouse and make your partner feel loved and valued every day. It is a refreshing antidote to the childish culture of self-indulgence that populates our media, schools, and pop-psychology literature.

Rock-Solid Advice
Being married is hard and the authors know it. This is practical advice on how to put your marriage on the track to success. It is written from a Christian perspective, but is applicable for married people of any faith. Whether you are thinking of getting married or have been married for years, this book offers scenarios and thoughful discussion questions at the end of each chapter that is like having your own marriage counselor! It can strengthen weak marriages and make good marriages great. Get this book!

A Good Book
This isn't a very big book, but there is information galore. The recipes are easy, ingredients are easy to find, and the homemade products are wonderful to use. I have bought many books on making comestics, but this small book is right up there with the best. This book is full of knowledge on making natural skin care products. I recommend this small book for anyone who is interested in making cosmestics.

I LOVE THIS BOOK!
The only thing wrong with it is that it was TOO short! This book contains wonderfully easy and beautfully effective herbal concotions that offer you a variety of ways to spoil yourself. (-_-)

I LOVE THIS BOOK!
I really do. The only thing i didnt like is that with all books I love,it was simply not long enough for my taste! (Hence the 4 *'s instead of 5)The natural beauty recipes are not only easy but work wonderfully. This lady really seems to beleive in what she writes, too. I like that! She comes across as so open ,intelligent, gentle and kind. A very down to earth book by a very down to earth woman,in my opinion. I plan on purchasing more books not only by her but from Storey publishing.

My Hourglass review
This was a super book!! I thought it was very exciting because I thought that Rosemary Rita was going to be stuck back in time forever. I would recommend this book to any girl who likes to read really cool books. Buy this book or you'll miss out on all the fun!!

Rosemary In Paris
Another incredible adventure! This one took me back to Paris, a place I truly love. Except this time, I got to travel back in time. I learned all about the World's Fair. What a fun way to share history with kids! You just can't put it down!

Perfect Paris Fun
I liked this one even better than the first Hourglass Adventure. Rosemary Rita is awesome as she tries to capture the jewel thief. This is a very exciting book. I couldn't put it down. It made me feel like I went back in time to Paris in 1889. I think that everyone should read this book. I really loved it!!!

Leaves you wanting more
These touching short stories left me wanting to know more about the writers, but also reflecting on my own past and future. Well written, sometimes funny and sometimes sad, this book would make a wonderful gift for sisters, moms, grandmothers and friends. Highly satisfying read!

Wise and wry reflections on being women in the world.
Though these writers have in common their roots in San Francisco and their participation in a writers' group of long standing, each of their voices is distinct. The authors bring to their experiences as girls, sisters, wives, mothers, grandparents, and professionals- in other words, as modern American women - an array of attitudes unique to each of them. Some of these pieces are humorous, some poignant, some even painful, but each illuminates a significant moment or event that will provoke readers to pause and reflect upon moments in their own livesthat might otherwise have gone unacknowledged. An engaging and delightful collection.

Every woman will identify with the stories these women tell.
Every piece in this collection delights, but several stand out: Sue Renfrew's "Cycle's End"--the life of a washing machine reflects the life of its owner--Margaret Gault's "How To Be Married to a Lawyer and Still Be Happy"--we learn how to win arguments against our husbands no matter what they do for a living--and Rosemary Patton's "The Library"--the story of a daughter helping an elderly mother to dismantle a library of 5,000 books before she moves to a retirement home. Every woman will identify with the life experiences described in this book.

A Great Book for an Intermediate to Advanced French Student
As the title indicates, the book lists 750 verbs and demonstrates their uses with sample sentences. It is not the same as the usual verb book which lists and conjugates many of the most basic verbs, but instead it concentrates on the meaning of more advanced verbs and supplies sample sentences. The book is intended for someone who already has a basic knowledge of French. In the main text, the verbs are not conjugated, but there is an appendix at the end of the book of grammatical tables in which verbs are conjugated. The author assumes that the reader already has a knowledge of basic verbs such as "to be", "to speak", "to go", etc. but instead dwells on more advanced verbs, such as s'insister pour que (+ the infinitive) meaning to insist on or opter entre quelque chose meaning to choose among a group of things. The book does demonstrate more complex usages of some of the simpler verbs - for example, parler dans quelque chose meaning to speak into something such as a microphone, or laisser quelque chose meaning to leave something (somewhere or for someone). Sentences are given for each verb which I found extremely helpful, although it is necessary to go to the appendix if you are not sure of the conjugation of the verb.
Overall, I believe this book would be very helpful in improving the grammar and vocabulary of an intermediate to advanced French student.

Improved my French beyond any doubt
The are many books on French verbs but the emphasis is usually on conjugations. What distinguish this book from others is that it is focused on how to actually use those verbs. I am surprised to find that I am the first person to review this book because it is so useful. Before I had the book, there were many verbs which were only in my "passive" vocabulary -- i.e. when I read or hear them, I would have a sense of what they mean. After reading this book, however, many more verbs have become part of my "active" vocabulary. This means that I can now actually use them in a conversation. The examples given in the book have helped me to have a much better grasp of how and when to use those. I am very pleased with the improvements I have made. What I do with the book is that everyday I would read a couple of pages at random. After reading the examples given for a particular verb, I would imagine myself in situations where I can use the verb. This has proven to be a very effective way to integrate the words learned into my vocabulary.
