Blend of the ascetic and pastoral is top fare
Walter Hilton's massive undertaking (the first thorough treatment of ascetic theology in the English language) is as rewarding for those today as in his own era - and a careful reading makes one realise that he was treating many of the same difficulties we would find in our own time. This is by no means light reading, but the lawyer's mind, theologian's precision, and pastoral father's homely charm are a winning combination. (How can anyone resist one who, after giving an explanation of sin so with the lawyer's accuracy that one nearly searches for the section on plea bargaining, then tenderly reassures his reader that God is most generous with forgiveness or "heaven would be much too empty?)I would recommend it (if not require it) of anyone with an interest either in ascetic theology or fourteenth century England.

One of the great books of Christian piety.
Author Peter Ackroyd (The Life of Thomas More) says that Hitlton's "Scale of Perfection" and Kempas'"Imitation of Christ" are part of the broad tradition of late medieval Christian piety. Both books played a central part of Thomas More's life. Scale of Perfection is concerend with the active Chrictian life in the world. Hilton also wrote a volume entitled "The Mixed Life."

You can tell a book by its cover... it's beautiful
In large type (maybe 16 pt), with dusty 1930's illustrations, the authors recreate a prairie boy's life during The Great Depression. Reuben, a small second grader, is called shrimp-boats by his classmates, and a scaredy cat by Mary Ellen, until he wins a ride in a barrel rolling, Curtiss Jenny barn storming bi plane. His mother serves chicken a la king to truckers at the Lariat Café. His father teaches dancing, and wears a silk handkerchief, just like the U.S. President. But as the Depression continued, both his parents lose their jobs, and his father must find work with dangerous oil drilling rigs. Reuben expects to start 3rd grade in his comfortable Oklahoma town, but his father loses his job, and must find work anywhere doing anything. When he finds an ad for a wingwalker, the family leaves Oklahoma for a new adventure. While his father works in the circus, more as a wing-dancer than a wing walker, Reuben must make new friends, and some are quite unusual, like the Tattooed Lady. Traveling with the circus, they cross Minnesota, Wisconsin, Illinois, Indiana, Ohio, and Kentucky. A sweet, quiet, timeless book for summer reading.

Delicious!!
This story of a young boy who lives through the Great Depression will give readers a delicious taste of the period. Imagine your father losing his job and becoming a stuntman who walks on the wings of an aeroplane!! Scary! Selznick's unique illustrations complement Wells' vivid writing. I always feel like I'm right there in the story when I look at Selznick's illustrations...Wells' text pulls me in even farther.
Wow!! Read this to a whole class group (2-8) to get a flavor of the Era and to study the craft of writing - Wells stuffs this story with passages that should be highlighted and analyzed as models of how to capture a reader's imagination.

A Most Valuable Tool
I highly recommend this book. In my work as a psychotherapist, I meet many women who have not yet come to terms with with their personal financial demons. A Woman's Book of Money & Spiritual Vision has provided me with a wonderful tool with which I can help them begin. The book is written in a personal style. The author shares her own story as she presents questions and worksheets to help the reader explore the dynamic of money in her history and in her day-to-day life. It can be used alone or with a group to help uncover the myths and facts behind one's financial attitudes and behaviors.

Women and Money: Despite Rumors, Made for Each Other
Rosemary Williams looks at money--crazy-making, delicious, necessary money--from every angle. She does the same with women's belief systems. Money is simple; it's our baroque beliefs that keep us from it. "Money is never neutral," she says. "It triggers powerful emotions and conflicting messages--especially for women. The 'money messages' we were taught can pop up at any moment, in decisions large and small."

This is "a workshop in a book" because that's how the author does her research. Her experience during years of leading women through the thorny underbrush of our misconceptions and false information could save the rest of us years of struggle and want.

A former banker and financial planner, Williams has constructed her book like a diary. This is one book meant to be written in, the pages covered in notes. I found that a relief ; somehow breaking that "rule" of my father's gave me the idea that other childhood "rules" were also about to be replaced by grownup liberations. It also called to mind the writing we do in school workbooks in the act of learning.

Something that may come as a surprise, says Williams, is that money and spirituality are not at odds. There are prayers and quotes scattered through this book. Somehow beginning this work by saying "Holy One, Sustainer of all things, give me the courage to look at my financial life with clear sight...." is a wonderfully centering process.

With "Women and Money" women can lessen their fear through dispelling ignorance, which is surely the root of all evil.

Wonderful children stories- even for adults!
Being a former kindergarten student of Mrs. Barse, I enjoyed this book a great deal. I would recommend this book to teachers and parents for their children/students.

A "Must-Have" for teachers everywhere
After reading her biography, you can tell that Ms. Barse puts a lot of thought and emotion into her writings. The short stories are perfect for oral reading. Most of the stories have an appropriate message that relates to concepts the children would understand. I will be using this in my classroom for many years to come.

The pictures are very cute and match the stories very well.

This is also a great gift for teachers.

But Gilda will go nowhere without her baby- through sandstorm and travail she sticks with her baby and then they find another oasis- and Gilda is the funniest looking horse any of the people who live there have ever seen. Unpacking an on-going dialogue
Although African American studies classes often avoid the subject, and Bible scholars pretend there is no such reality, African Americans have been engaging that which has come to be known as the Holy Bible ever since the first slave was brought to the shores of the so-called "New World." Wimbush sees no reason to continue the uncomfortable silence. Instead, calling together experts from psychology, sociology, art history, religion, history, and other fields, Wimbush opens up a dialogue about the uneasy relationship between African Americans and the Bible. Scholars engage folks as disparate as W. E. B. DuBois, August Wilson, Digable Planets, and Orishatukeh Faduma. Subjects range widely, as much to expand the dialogue as to illuminate its breadth and depth. Make no mistake, this is not "easy reading." But regardless of your field, you will find this text richly informative. Do be sure to read the introductory essay and the explanatory essay by Barbara Holdredge. The former sets out the project; the latter details its implications, for at least one field. Also, be, clear, you will not find "Africans" of the Biblical world in this book. That is not the point. But if you are interested in this rich interaction, this book will wet your appetite for future explorations. Let the dialogue begin.

Young love & trouble in paradise (i.e. marriage)
Aloha And Mai Tais: A Novel About Hawaii In The 1930's And 1940's by Rosemary I. Patterson is a "slice-of-life" saga about Atherton and Jessica Scully, two elite people of Honolulu who decide to invest in the Tropical Palace Hotel. Young love, trouble in paradise (i.e. marriage), wrenching changes inflicted on Hawaiian life and culture by the crush and demands of the tourism industry, as well as the shock of the surprise attack on Pearl Harbor by the Japanese are all part of this picturesque and memorable story that is the next best thing to taking a vacation to Hawaii in a time machine!
