A unique book
Rohan O'Grady (aka June Skinner) is a Canadian writer with two known novels published: "Pippin's Journal" (also titled "The Curse of the Montrolfes" ) and "Let's Murder Uncle" which was adapted for film in the sixties. The common quality to both books is the author's understanding of how children think and talk. But the heroine of "Pippin" is far from being an ordinary thirteen year old. Like Emily in "A High Wind in Jamaica" she is a young girl who has been changed by circumstances. The core of this book is the strange relationship between Catherine , nicknamed Pippin, and Guy Montrolfe; a driven, Heathcliff type of Byronic hero. But as well as being a love story, it is also a ghost story and an adventure yarn. Comparisons with the Brontes, R.L. Stevenson and Henry James are tempting. Certainly it is far more than the "gothic" label implies. A book that will haunt you.

A Must-Have For Fans of Sutcliff's Work
The editor's description above gives a concise summary of this book, so I will just offer a reader's impression. Adapted from Barbara Talcroft's graduate thesis, her work is a perfect balance of organized scholarly research, and very entertaining reading. She focuses her study on 3 major themes that run throught Sutcliff's work, set in early Britain: the Sacrificial King, the Maimed King, and the worship of the Goddess. She examines only Sutcliff's novels aimed at young adults, as well as the incomparable 'Sword at Sunset' (in my opinion, the best Arthurian novel ever written). Talcroft's concise analysis and observations about these themes, and how they play out in the characters and storylines, offer a very valuable supplement to Sutcliff's novels.

I agreed completely with Talcroft's appreciation of Rosemary Sutcliff as a writer whose brilliance goes far beyond that of simply a novelist of historical fiction. She illuminates the major influences on Sutcliff's work, notably the classic study of ancient religion "The Golden Bough", and the works of Rudyard Kipling, Sutcliff's favorite writer. Her argument that Sutcliff's genius lies not only in her masterful skills as a writer, but in her talent for helping young adults to appreciate history and their own roots in ancient cultures, is a fine completion to this valuable book.

Rosemary Sutcliff herself reported that she enjoyed this book enormously, noting that she gained fresh insights into her novels, from Talcroft's observations and analysis. So did I, and so will any of Sutcliff's many fans. This book was worth every penny.

Marvelous Book
Having read a current bio about Gertrude Bell (Desert Queen), which I found a bear to get through due to the less than amazing quality of writing, I was curious about Bell's own writings and thrilled to find some still in print. Gertrude Bell could write!! What a wonderful book. Having an interest in archaeology and the history of ancient civilizations, I enjoyed the material she offered. But even if those aren't areas of interest to you, the people she met and talked to give one a better understanding of the midEast and of people in general. This was a hard book to put down. My only desires were that a map had been provided and that all of her wonderful pictures would have been printed on glossy paper so they could have been better appreciated. (I would have paid the extra!)

Healthy at last!
After about 4 decades of trying to lose weight fast, I noticed that I was over 20 kilos heavier than before. So I decided to lose weight slowly - and it's working!! Rosemary Stanton's idea is to change the emphasis in your eating and exercise patterns rather than to go on a diet. Diets make you feel like you're in prison so of course you break out - and head for the chocolate shop! What I found worked for me was to keep a diary, not of the eating mistakes I made, but of the things I did right. I gave myself gold stars for fruit and vegetables that I ate and, every time I did some exercise, I added another star. I gradually cut back on the fats and oils, remembering to keep some, partly because they satisfy hunger but also because your body needs some. One day, I noticed that I had a star for exercise every day of the week. Wow! I thought, I'm actually changing. So I kept on going until I had 20 stars in a row. Why stop here? I asked myself. Now I have done some exercise every day for 263 days. Some days I feel really tired but I just do a little exercise so I don't have to start counting from zero again! It's a great incentive! And, with the eating, I don't ban any food. I just change the emphasis more towards fruit and vegetables and wholemeal breads and cereals and less towards fatty foods. I am much more healthy. I used to get colds and coughs all the time. Now I just power past them and get on with life. And some researchers are saying that exercise and mental activity like reading helps in the fight against brain deterioration. And, all the researchers seem to agree that cancer and heart attacks can be prevented better with a healthy diet and lots of enjoyable exercise. For myself, my asthma and hayfever is more manageable than it has been for years and I've been able to halve my medication with help from my doctor. I've lost 12 kilos over about 2 years. That sounds slow, I hear you saying, but compare it with the 20 kilos that I had put on over 4 decades and it gets it into a different perspective. I still have a way to go but, by "hastening slowly" I'll get there. The trick is to go so slowly that your new habits become automatic. So, do I have any chocolate now? Yes, of course, but I have a bit here and there rather than the addictive style of eating it that I used to have. It's not that I have will-power. It's that with more fruit and vegies, my body feels more satisfied and crazy cravings don't effect it so much. What about when I feel hungry? I just eat more food. The food that Rosemary Stanton recommends is very nourishing and yummy and satisfying but doesn't put on weight so you can have heaping helpings. She has some good recipe books too. Good luck if you decide to try this path. As she says, start by loving your body and then treat it well by giving it enjoyable activities and nourishing food. Be a friend to your body.

A fun, silly book that children and adults would love
My cousin bought me this book when I was about six and I still love it (I'm 17 now). My whole family thinks it's a hilarious book and we have given it to many of our friends for presents.
