A fun tour of the golden age of billiards in the US
Thank goodness for people like Robert Byrne who have the foresight to document the lives of notable people. Dan McGoorty was one such personality, and I'm glad this book is back in print.

On one hand, McGoorty was a person whom many considered a waste of life; on the other hand, he was a master of a complex and subtle game. The contrast of these two aspects of McGoorty makes for a fascinating read. There's also a section in which McGoorty shares with us his experience with other notable pool and billiard champs. Highly recommended for anybody interested in the history of billiards.

A great book from a better time in America
McGoorty: A billiard hustler's life is one of the greatest books I have ever read. It is out of print, but a few years back I got it from the Cornhusker catalog. Anyway, this book is a narrative that is just funny as hell and poignant, from beginning to end. It's all about Danny McGoorty, and his rise from being a no-name drunk pool hustler, to a drunk box car bum, and then to a sober billiard champion playing among the likes of Willie Hoppe and Ray Ceulemans. A must read for anybody who likes a story that won't slow down, and a definite must for any pool player or fanatic. Find this used or whatever, but get it!!

New Kids rocks!
I bought this book several years ago when the Kids were famous and popular. This is above all, the best book. The Kids wrote it themselves, and have loads of childhood pics of each other. It also talked about what it was like growing up, and how they got together. I've read the whole book several times, and I never tire of it. New Kids have always been #1 in my heart, and they always will be.

An excellent story, written in the boys own words
In most of thees New Kids books, the facts are not always accurate, but in this one they are dead on. This book was written by the kids, and tell each side of the story (from their point of view) It has some seldomly published pictues of the Kids and their famillies. Well worth the investment.

Great Book
In this very concise book (only 130 pages), Rubinstein gives the reader a great introduction to the average Palestinian refugee's attachment to the land of Israel. If you want a very easy to read, informative introduction to the attachment of Palestinian refugees to their homes this is the book to read. I highly recommend it!

Out of Print? A Shame!
That this book is out of print is unbelievable to me. It could help so many, today and tomorrow, to understand the Palestinian culture in a way I've never read about in any other book. Mr. Rubinstein is a revered Israeli columnist for Ha'aretz News and acknowledged as the leading Israeli "Arabist". Though his columns are information, this book is truly alive with visual images no where else to be found, with insights so critical for Americans and Israelis. How Random House allowed this timeless book to have only a short shelf life is really astounding and upsetting to me. Try and get it Used and then add your review to mine. You won't be disappointed; this book is a true gem.

Presenting all sides on these hotly debated issues
School Vouchers And Privatization: A Reference Handbook by education consultant and expert Danny Weil presents unbiased information on controversial matters arising from proposals to privatize education and the concept of school vouchers. Careful descriptive analysis is providing for their impacts on diverse aspect of education including: special education, alternative schools, student rights, diverse sexuality in schools, Native American education, and much, much more. Presenting all sides on these hotly debated issues (such as the arguments for and against neoliberalism and privatization efforts), School Vouchers And Privatization is an invaluable contribution for today's national dialogue on the issue and very highly recommended reading for anyone who needs to know the facts without having to sift through layers of biased propaganda.

Privatization and Education
The debate over privatization, in general, is a debate over the distinctions between the private market driven ideas of neo-liberalism and the role of the public sphere. Giant trans-national corporations are the principal players in the "free markets" of the neo-liberals, while government and civic society are the principal players in the public spheres. But just what are the distinctions between the public and private spheres and what are the connections and relationships? Is privatization a call for smaller government or a wholesale call for a government corporate relationship aimed at radically transforming education? In this amazing and well documented book, Danny Weil gives the reader a comprehensive overview of just what privatization is as an economic theory and how it relates to a myriad of school issues including but not limited to private school vouchers, the private philanthropy movement for scholarships, faith based charities and the movement from the public sphere to the religious sphere, commercialism in schools, the for profit management of schools and the development of the Educational Maintenance Organization model that seems to be emerging as a public policy alternative to public schools. The book traces the development of the religious right's involvement with privatization efforts aimed at schools and develops a comprehensive historical overview that allows the reader to see the national and international implications of privatization efforts on our nations schools. A truly dynamic and comprehensive look at the issue; the author has done a great job defining these issues for those interested or not immediately aware of the public policy issues. Strong recommendation!

Preparing for Business Success.
"Setting The Pace For Business Success" provides a combination of high level strategic advise of a personal nature while at the same time delivering a very practical ten step approach to the fulfillment of personal goals. The book is fraught with valuable insights and experiences for Preparing, navigating safely and successfully through the Scylla and Carybdis of corporate career channels.

Mr. Lanier's book shares an honest, straightforward and pragmatic (no tricks or strings attached) approach to establishing, navigating and managing career goals and objectives. The book illustrates how corporate success can be achieved without resorting to an unethical or "survival of the fittest" approach.

This book is well written and is easy to read. I believe "Setting The Pace For Business Success" can be valuable to the graduate student as well as the seasoned career professional. In these times of troubled moral and ethical standards in the workplace the corporate world needs to be reminded that success is not incompatible with good business ethics. How to prepare your self to get there is just as important as getting there. I look forward towards future titles from this author.

Setting The Pace For Business Success
I thoroughly enjoyed the book. Mr. Lanier gives the reader the benefit of his 28 years of corporate experience in a way that entertains yet educates anyone aspiring to climb the corporate ladder. He suggests his book is for those readers who have at least 5 years of corporate experience; but I contend this should be required reading for MBA's students who are first time workplace entrants and anyone desiring a career in corporate america. The book also gives a glimpse to some of the inter workings at Lucent and AT&T. I plan to buy a number of copies to give to my employees and employees I mentor who are striving to be successful in their corporate careers.

Theatre Know-How
My first job was as marketing director of a regional music theatre company. I was a journalism grad with little "arts" experience. This was a wonderful book. It really helped me understand our audience. It was at my right hand throughout the two years I held that job.

Danny Newman is my god
As the volunteer box office manager for a small theater company in the Midwest, I have found Mr. Newman's book the single most valuable arts marketing book I've ever read. It is filled with many wonderful, practical ideas to help a company bring in an audience. I've used many of his suggestions to build our subscription by 25% a year for the last three years. Newman provides clear directions to put his ideas into practice. His Keep It Simple Stupid style is easy and often amusing to read, and he provides a wealth of examples for the non-professional marketer (me). *Most* important, this book brims with optimism. When confronted with kindly but dim-witted audience members and tempermental artistic directors, Mr. Newman is the little voice that says "You can do this, and it will be great!" I love you, Danny.

Towards a Critical Multicultural Literacy: Theory and Practice for Education for Liberation (Counterpoints, Studies in the Postmodern Theory of Education , Vol 50)

Author: Danny K. Weil

Multiculturalism as the quest for human understanding
What a marvelous book. Utopian in spirit yet practical in application this book takes the notion of multiculturalism to human levels not seen in many discourses. The nalaysis is fresh and interesting and should be a part of every teacher training program. Weil is a former kindergarten, first and second grade bilingual teacher and he is formidable in both his analysis and his historical awareness. I walked away as a teacher of fifth grade, finally understanding multiculturalism as more than a 'fad' but as a serious quest to be human. Highly recommended.

Finally, a critical look at multiculturalism
This book is an insightful addition to a subject that has received more than its share of exposure. However, what Weil does in this essay is compare and contrast much of what parades as multicultural education, and in the spirit of the Frankfurt School, Paulo Freire and Henry Giroux, he couches our understanding of multiculturalism within political realizations and emancipatory objectives. His point is simple and worth considering: The tourist approach to multiculturalism along with individualistic approaches to understanding diversity fail to seat this understanding within socio-historical contexts and fail to provide reasoning opportunities for students to reason their way within and through, multicultural points of view . Thus, these approaches fail to provide hope for combatting what Weil calls "the logic of oppression" that faces all human beings. The book is theoretical and practical. Weil is an ex-kindergarden and first grade teacher so he speaks with teachers, not to them. A must read for all teachers, prospective teachers, parents and humanistic intellectuals interested in exapanding the debate regarding diversity and multiculturalism.

Trooper Tales

Author: Danny Moon

Average review score:

Great new book!
I read only non-fiction books and this is a fine new writer. I enjoyed every one of the 30 stories. Each one gave me something to think about. Danny Moon is honest and humble in telling about his experiences. He relates them to his faith in a "regular guy" kind of way that is straightforward and not at all "preachy." I just heard of a chief of police who is making this required reading for young people who have to perform community service. It makes you feel safer knowing a person of Moon's calibre is out there protecting us. You won't be disappointed in this book!

Red Lights and Siren
I highly recommend this book to anyone from any career background and any age from upper elementary through senior citizen. Neither I nor any family member or close friend is in law enforcement, so the stories gave me insight about the daily challenges that face an officer. The stories cover a range of topics about law enforcement situations and also about the author's family life. The writer's sense of humor comes across well. The stories evoke a variety of responses - laughter, tears, incredulity about the dispostion of some cases, etc. Each selection is short enough you can read it in just a few minutes if that's all the time you have. This would make a great Father's Day gift!

Wonderful fun
This is a wonderful book for anyone who enjoys brainteasers. My family spent Thanksgiving afternoon trying to stump each other with the questions in this book- most of which were very challenging.

Great Book -- Lots of Fun
For those who love history, pop culture, or just good old trivia, this is a very entertaining book that is well worth your while.

We have spent hours with it in our house, challenging each other -- "you'll never get this one" -- with the great tidbits the author provides.

Highly recommended!
