Perfect for keyboard/piano players!
My mother bought this book for my birthday. I was so excited! I love Fred Hammond's music. I never really took music lessons and I don't play the piano much. The notes are very easy to understand and follow. If you're like me, and have misplaced the words to Fred's tapes, then you will be happy to find out the words are provided in this book. Perfect when you are teaching the song to a group of people.

This is a manifesto on African American soul survival!
This is a must read for anyone concerned with uplifting African people in America. It details the life of an ex-con turned Presidential advisor turned crack addict...Gilbert somehow saves himself from self-destruction and establishes SIMBA, INC., the Oakland,CA-based 12-year rites-of-passage mentoring program (the nation's only) for African American youth. The co-author, Cheo Tyehimba, an award-winning journalist, weaves Gilbert's narrative with uncompromising honesty and has a brilliant flair for creative non-fiction. His upcoming novel, "Drum Sold" will be published in the spring 1999.Look for it!

Although, the book is currently out-of-print, I've heard that it can still be purchased from Simba, Inc. the non-profit org. represented in "The Ghetto Solution." And all proceeds go to support the organization.

Excellent book. Somewhat technical.
This is a really super book. Much of it may be too involved for non-scientist readers, though there is plenty of material that just about anyone can read profitably. Probably best suited for an introductory graduate course, or senior level course, for earth science students. Has much better coverage of global biogeochemical processes than most climate books. I would combine with Peixoto & Oort or Hartmann's books, which are complementary.

I am a physical oceanographer, but not a climate specialist.

A gem for the new grapegrower
As a complete beginner to viticulture I have found this book absolutely invaluable. It covers all aspects of cool-climate grapegrowing in a readable and accessible manner, with clear text and diagrams concerning site and variety selection, planting, establishment, pruning and training, pests and diseases, and winemaking. The section on grape varieties has excellent photographs, and a superb introduction gives an overview of the cooler grape-producing regions of the world. Written in New Zealand, this is however a "must" for all new grapegrowers, no matter where the "terroir". My copy is starting to show signs of over-use!

The Green Wave and the Navy
History, romance, patriotism, courage, tragedy, respect, honor, admiration, appreciation and gratitude; all of these are found in this 512 page book. The life and heroic death of Edward C. Benfold, a 21 year old Navy corpsman assigned to the 1st Marine Division in Korea is reconstructed 47 years after his death from historical records, letters, newspaper clippings, military citations and in the words of his widow and son.

During the 1950's Charlton Comics, no longer in business published a comic book called "War Heroes". Included in the book is the original comic strip about Benfold's heroism.

A Naval destroyer, USS BENFOLD (DDG-65) was named in Edward's honor. Petty Officer Danny K. Edgar, co-author of this book is in charge of all food preparation aboard the ship.

A Memorial in his honor, constructed by high school seniors sits on the lawn of the high school from which Benfold graduated in 1949. The speaker at the dedication ceremony was the first Commander of the ship. Present at that dedication, July 4, 1994 was one of the Marines he saved on that fateful day.

A friendship has evolved between the town of Audubon, New Jersey, where Edward grew up and the BENFOLD, every Commanding Officer and members of the crew have visited this small community. Residents correspond and send gifts. The ship has in return sent gifts pertaining to the ship.

Craig Burgess, retired educator and poet and lifelong resident of Audubon is co-author. He has visited the ship every year on the anniversary of it's commissioning.

Included in the book are letters from officers and crew of the ship expressing affection for the town and appreciation for the friendship.

This is a beautiful story of heroism and patriotism, and a High School that is making the headlines in a positive way. Good kids who still have respect for those who have gone on before. It is heart warming and inspiring. This book is the most important thing I have ever been a part of. I am extremely honored to have had a hand in the birth of such a beautiful story. It cleanses the palate after reading about Littleton. It's like a breath of fresh, clean air.

Poignant, hilarious, comforting...

_Growing Up Gay_ is about more than growing up gay. It's about growing up DIFFERENT, and not knowing why. It's a book about stereotypes, and conquering them.

Many psychologists and well-meaning therapists have written articles and books about being homosexual, but few capture the wit and warmth of the Funny Gay Males. At every turn, I found myself shouting, "Yes! That's exactly what happened to me!"

The true charm of _Growing Up Gay_ is that it is not only hilariously funny, it is also a subtle guidebook in compassion and empathy. After reading this book, not only was I comforted and amused, but I was educated as well.

Perhaps the best thing about this book is its universality. I have shared _Growing Up Gay_ with several of my straight friends, and they all agreed its message reached farther than the title. This is a book about far more than being gay; it's a book about being unique and special and therefore worth more (if only in our own eyes).

I would heartily recommend this book to anyone, gay or straight, who is ready for a few laughs and an inside look at what makes us tick.

The print type in this book is larger enough for a beginner reader to point to an not lose there place. My son enjoys reading this story as much as I did when I was his age.

He heard my heart!
Danny Siegel has a way with words. His book was wonderful and taught me (and my heart) how to hear a lot of what goes on out there. This book can help you get through tough times, can be a good reference book for 'feel good' information and stories, and more.

I think you will like this book a lot.

A Wonderful Time!
Danny Glover reads this, and I enjoyed it as much (maybe more) than my daughter. This book and "How the Rhinoceros Got His Skin" sold us on Rabbit Ears audiobooks - we now have about a dozen. Get the full size so the child can follow the text easier and you can both enjoy the illustrations.
