What Else Could Go Wrong?
New York fireman Kevin Dempsey has arranged a perfect life for himself, his former-model wife Polly and their 3 year old daughter Zoe. He loves his job, has bought a new house for Polly and Zoe, and wants to have many more children. But Polly and Zoe don't come home from a trip to DisneyWorld, and Kevin's perfectly planned life falls apart.

And there the mystery begins. As more characters are added to the mix, the story becomes more complicated. Why did his alcoholic policeman father kill himself? Why is his brother Frank (also an alcoholic policeman) being pursued by the Internal Affairs Bureau? Why is his brother Kevin so angry? And how could anyone with such a troubled family possibly be as supportive and loving as his sister Margie? How can someone as emotionally damaged as Kevin recover from all the cruel blows being delivered to him?

The pace never slackens in this tense melodrama, and you'll be turning pages until the end.

I read "Fork in the Road" also by Denis Hamill and was equally engaged with that book.

A Life in Jazz

YOU ARE THERE!
This book is like having a conversation with Danny Barker. You are there, being guided through four generations of New Orleans musicians, reliving detailed moments in jazz history. His words invoke vibrant images of the jazz funerals, brass bands, the french quarter. He offers a "chronological discography" in the back of the book. It encompasses 1931-1975 and is an amazing compilation of recordings and artists. If only Ken Burns had consulted and included Danny Barker and highlighted some of his performances, his "Jazz" documentary would be what this book is - a treasure.

Teaching math using groaner style jokes
Mirror symmetry is something that can be used in the creation of many games. In this story, written for the early adolescent, the principles of mirror symmetry are used to solve a century-long mystery of lost treasure. However, the feature of the book that is most enjoyable is the dialog and the comic references. There is Rommel, the desert rat, Saddlesore Capone, and Mr. Mutard in the library.
The plot is that of a spoof of a bad western, which provides plenty of opportunities for jokes, some of which are obvious, but where many are very subtle and take a bit of thought before you get them. This is a good book for children, in that it teaches them mathematics while presenting a story that keeps their interest. It is a worthy addition to all middle school libraries.

Great Book!
The book describes the city, her quarters, habitants, history, gods, dangers and "stars" in a soberb way. The adventure with happens in a market chash is very good too. The ONLY drawback of the book in my oppinion are the pictures who are inferior to Warhammer FRP standards. Anyway the book surely worth the price.

Absolutely one of the best lateral-thinking puzzle books
"Mental Fitness Puzzles" really does offer a breath of fresh air to a genre that has been rather inbred for too long. The puzzles in this book are, for the most part, much better than those in similar books. For example, why would a man build a boat and then be happy when it sinks immediately? Why would another man watch someone steal his wallet and not raise a finger to object?

What really sets this book apart is that it is clear that there is independent thought and serious consideration behind the puzzles. While other books often include well-known but wrong puzzles, this one has intricately constructed puzzles. The problems are crafted to allow false assumptions, and red herrings are liberally construed, but the four authors clearly have played fairly. Most of the solutions are not only plausible but reasonable. (There are a few problematic puzzles, but they are the exceptions.)

For those who have not experienced "lateral thinking" puz! zles, they are short descriptions that seem to defy explanation (as in the questions in the first paragraph of this review). The goal is to find the explanation. These puzzles are often interactive, and most books require two people, one to read the solution and answer the other's questions. "Mental Fitness Puzzles" stands apart from its competition, though, in that the authors clearly have made this a book that one person can enjoy alone. Each problem has clues, but other books work that way, too. Here, though, the clues tend uniquely to indicate the authors' answer. That's a welcome feature. There's room for improvement, but overall, this book is a leap above the competition that I've seen and is well worth the cover price.

Providence: GM Compendium
The GM Compendium contains such a wealth of information that it is indispensable for anyone intending to use the Providence game world. Not only does it provide detailed descriptions of a broad cross section of "movers and shakers" within Providence but also provides a deep understanding of the historical, political, and sociological context in which these characters operate. Packaged with the Compendium is a very well designed Game Master's Screen and loose Character Sheets. This very fine publication is worth many hours of exploration and readers of it will likely find (as I did) that as one reads along the inter-relationships between individuals and groups become so very interesting that it is hard to leave the thing alone!

Good Driving Guide to Southwest
This is a good sightseeing guide that should help anyone who is interested in traveling the States of Utah, Arizona and New Mexico by car.

Even if you know you want to see the Grand Canyon, what else do you do in the Northern Arizona / Southern Utah area? This book answers that question.

Arranged by state, the book highlights different attractions in each area. It also suggests driving loops, designed to hi-light the highlights while traveling a circular route along major highways. This is certainly designed well for someone who is unfamiliar with the area and wants a travel itinerary laid out with suggested sights and attractions.

Accommodations or restraints are not listed, so one would have to look to another guide or the internet for those. This book can get you started with your destinations, however.
