A PRINCELY TALE
Robin Hood
E. Charles Vivian, Compiled by Cooper Edens
The exciting and timeless tale about "the prince of thieves" is more beautiful than ever in this special "Classic Illustrated Edition" title. As with the series' previous titles -- "Peter Pan," "Alice's Adventures in Wonderland," "Pinocchio" and "Aesop's Fables" -- "Robin Hood" is illustrated with a virtual best-of variety of color and black-and-white images from a collection of archival sources. There are more than 100 splendid images in all, dating from the 12th to the 20th century and created by artists as diverse as N.C. Wyeth, Howard Pyle, Walter Crane and Honor C. Appleton. The range is considerable, the fine-detail of the works is immensely impressive, the art restoration is impeccable, and each antique image is uniquely charming. The lack of a consistent visual style is initially jarring, but quickly it becomes apparent that this inconsistency is the very source of the book's appeal, particularly for retro fans attracted to ye olde graphics. The text itself remains loyal to E. Charles Vivian's classic version of the story -- with most of the content, spelling and grammar intact from the 1906 edition, making this respectful tribute to an old masterpiece worth its weight in gold marks.

Write on, sisters!
This is a fantastic anthology of feminist music criticism. With plenty of variety, information and verbosity, this 500-page tome is a veritable feast of wit.

Spanning the last few decades and mainly American-based, Rock She Wrote reveals the polemic and visionary deliberations of a host of women, including New York journalist Ellen Willis, who was stimulated by New Journalism and Critical Theory in the late 60's. And just as you'll never get bored hearing how Patti Smith "f--ked with form", or how women are ghettoised within the industry, neither is it tiring to rediscover the roots of Riot Grrrl as defined by Sassy magazine.

From the radical rhetoric of San Francisco's Tribe-8 to Kim Gordon's Sonic Youth tour diary, to Courtney Love being interviewed by Pamela Des Barres, to Susan Brownmiller's Rolling Stone piece on the vilification of Yoko Ono, to bell hoks' attack on Madonna, it's an all-encompassing read.

A great biography of an NC governor. Quite insightful.
This biography, by an expert writer, details the story of Governor of NC, Angus W. McLean, during a difficult period, 1925-1929. He was instrumental in organizing several textile mills and offered encouragement to industry and agriculture in the railroad enterprises which proved to be important between the Virginia and Carolinas. The story of McLean is just beginning at this point as he takes on accomplisheshisÐgoals for school systems and communities. His foresights and incentives place him among the greatest of NC leadership among the southern states. He is perhaps not one of the best known southern leaders by name, but his talents and thoughts are such that audiences will admire him and marvel at his leadership. Underwood offers a true look at his persona and gives library archives an intimate portryal of a man who contributed to society

Inspirational
This book describes the basic order of the Jewish prayer service, and gives historical background on its evolution. The language is clear and engaging. Best of all, the author's love for the topic shines through on every page. Garfiel calls the service an expression of the "everyday mysticism" of generations of rabbis, and manages to convey this feeling through the quality of the writing.

Sister for Sam
This was one of my favorite books as a child. At one time I had the entire collection, but somehow they magically disappeared over time. This would be a great collection to have once again. This book is essential to the collection. I remember reading this book night after night until I had the entire book down by heart. Truely a work of art.

Every Hymn Has a Spiritual Story
This is a wonderful compilation of well-loved hymns and stories and devotional messages regarding them. The messages are uplifting and well-written. They are lovely little sermons. This book could be used before church choir practice to put the members in the right frame of mind regarding the music being worked on, and also inspires deep devotional thought for daily readings. It receives my strong endorsement.

Social & Criminal Justice Hard As Stone
Ever heard it said the way to hell is paved with good intentions? Sometimes the way to prison is paved the same way. STONE JUSTICE written by Deborah McMartin & Evelyn Morgan w/a Lawrence King is the story of the abuse, the life, the struggles, the redemption and the execution of Toni Jo Henry. Abused by her father, she left home at the age of thirteen. Though intelligent, the highest grade in school she attained was the sixth and she repeated it three times because she had to work instead of attending class. Nevertheless she tried to make something of herself, but she was thwarted by the great depression and prejudice. That she found true, honest, deep, consuming love and eventually salvation are the only bright spots in the life of this humble, kind, loyal, sweet and charitable woman. Toni Jo Henry never had a chance. Circumstances or people always intervened to crush her every opportunity, her every hope.

This glimpse into the scandalous abuses that abounded in early twentieth century American society is so harsh, so raw, so unforgiving as to be unbelievable. Surely this couldn't happen in America.

This incredible story will make you laugh, it will make you appreciate the progress of the past fifty years in social programs and criminal justice, and it will make you cry.
