Tour de force!
What a ride! Handbook of Methods in Aquatic Microbial Ecology by Paul F. Kemp, et al is the only book on Acuatic Microbial Ecology you will ever need. Folks: case closed. From the introduction on topiary dislocution to the guts of the nanophylum discussion-- Paul F. Kemp grabs your attention and holds it like a boa constrictor, or like a sentient glue creature, or like a bear trap.
*A bear trap.*
The book puts to rest the myth that an expert textbook cannot be as compelling as a clandestine extra-marital affair, or a Hollywood action movie.
Folks: a Hollywood. Action. Movie.
Handbook of Methods in Aquatic Microbial Ecology: Superb!

St. Helena And The Search For The Cross
Evelyn Waugh wrote very funny, sophisticated novels about the British upper and bohemian classes. His short novel Helena is set in the late Roman empire, long before those categories existed, at least as we know them. It is about the mother of Constantine the Great, the first Christian emperor, and her search for the True Cross in fourth century Palestine, after a life of imperial politics that took her from one end of the known world to the other. She was not active in politics, but born and married into it, being the daughter of a British Celtic chief (whom Waugh names Cole)and the wife of Chlorus, a Roman aristocrat and soldier who was the father of the future emperor. The first two-thirds of the book is a beautifully written fictional account of her life at the top, and we discover that after all there was an upper class with bohemian hangers-on not unlike Britain's in the last century. Waugh creates a completely convincing imperial court that is treacherous and sophisticated, and a very convincing saint who discovers her purpose in life in it. The supporting figures in the novel--a tutor; an architect; a humble, over-worked bishop; a pair of coniving witches--are among the best things in the book.

Secrets on 16th Street
Easiest book to review I ever saw; all pages were completely blank. But the blurb on the back outside cover was certainly intriguing. :)

Chowin', swimmin' droolin' coolin'; Hot Dog dogs are cool!
Stuck on a desert island with your kids? You better have Hot Dog with you!
³Hot dog, silly dog, chowing down some chili dog.² Got the beat? Mott keeps it going with a simple, fun, poetic pace; choosing words and pictures to delight eyes and ears.
You and your children will see pictures of dogs with slobbering lips, bespectacled eyes, clownish headgear, as well as just plain dogs, joyous to be alive and acting silly. Each page is double fun because the computer-enhanced backgrounds are ,well, ZANY!
Actually one half of a wild duo of books, Hot Dog is the companion to Cool Cat, Mott¹s other whimsical photographic salute to animal silliness and saintliness.
The book ends (as does Cool Cat) with a loving, warm glance at the people/doggie (or people/kitty) relationship.

Sound guide to a horrid little dog
I bought this book in an effort to learn to bond with my pug Grendel. The burden falls on me to do it as my wife refuses to walk him as she says he adds 10 years to her appearance (15 with the dog jacket), and in a funny way I think she's probably right. He is a hard dog to to get to know, and even harder to like, but thanks to this superb guide I think were making progress until my kids put that "Kick Me" label on his jacket. 4 neighbours took up the invitation on a recent walk and Grendel has, if anything, become even more disagreeable.

The Hudson Valley - a treasure trove
Travel's best kept secret is exposed: the Hudson River Valley. Evelyn Kanter has written a wonderful, concise guide to this beautiful and historically significant region. I should know. I live here. Her book has even enlightened me. The book is factual and full of terrific snippets of information. I'm going to keep it in my glove compartment for my lazy day trips around the valley. This book is a great reference for Heritage travel visitors and locals. It's an invitation to see, firsthand, where American history gained its foothold.
