Ways women as a whole can regain control of their destiny
Problems Of Women's Liberation: A Marxist Approach by Evelyn Reed looks at why women have been oppressed throughout recorded history, and why opponents to women's rights are so implacably entrenched and determined. From examining the myth of female inferiority; to ways women as a whole can regain control of their destiny; to how cosmetics and fashions exploit women, Problems Of Women's Liberation is a sharp-eyed and stringently worded wake-up call to the problems of the past and how they have shaped present gender discriminations. A very strongly recommended addition to Women's Studies reading lists and Women's History collections, Problems Of Women's Liberation also offers concrete hope for a more egalitarian future.

Property-Tax Exemption for Charities: Mapping the Battlefield

Thorough research and excellent analysis
The subject of property tax exemptions for charities may not on first impression seem like the most burning issue of the day. However, the topic involves several elements that provoke the passion if not the ire of any number of people: taxes, property rights, politics, discrimination, and religion. A list of subjects not to raise at cocktail parties would not contain too many additional entries.

Legal theories notwithstanding, property taxes begin with the simple practicality that real property is impossible to hide and easy to confiscate. Regardless of the owner's asset liquidity, property taxes invoke the Willie Sutton theory of taxation: that's where the money is.

Legal theories notwithstanding, property tax exemptions have at their origin the fact that activities that we consider as charitable, schools, hospitals, welfare, etc., were the almost exclusive province of the medieval church. The church could not be taxed because the crown would risk excommunication or interdiction. In the Middle Ages, in contrast to today, going to hell was something to be feared rather than encouraged.

We learn from this that property taxes are inevitable and exemptions are eternal if not immutable. Old habits are difficult to break.

Evelyn Brody, the editor of this book, is professor of law at Chicago-Kent College of Law, Illinois Institute of Technology and an associate scholar with the Urban Land Institute's Center on Nonprofits and Philanthropy. She and her contributors do a uniformly good job of placing the issues in context.

The historical perspectives were valuable, particularly a chronology showing how history and taxes interrelate. Other chapters include discussions of legal theories of taxation and exemptions, alternative methods, and the conflict between tax-exempt organizations and municipalities.

If the book has a deficiency it is that the scope constrains itself to, as the subtitle indicates, mapping the battlefield rather than preparing for battle. I should have liked to see more material on the relationship between property taxes and property use.

All in all, the book is definitely a successful example of thorough research and excellent analysis of that research. I await the sequel.

Well presented self-help
I had been seeing a counselor for a couple of months during a bitter divorce. The sessions had become more or less a chance to chat while waiting for the next crises. I asked the counselor if there was something that I could do for myself, and she suggested this book. I spent some time reading it and then used the exercises for the next few months. They were very effective, and even though I did proceed with the divorce, I was able to maintain an even emotional balance throughout.

Highly Recommended

RAVEN
This book had a little bit of everything: of course romance, and the chemistry between Marcus & Raven is sizzling, but there's also, adventure, painful tragedy, with a touch of gothic intrigue. Marcus is such a sensual man and the dialogue between him and Raven was so steamy! I've read several books by Evelyn Rogers, and I'm always impressed. This was her best book so far!

A clear jewel in the sea of postmodern confusion
This book is sheer brilliance. The fact that it is taken from lectures may be the reason behind its clear and unpretentious language. But while clear and unpretentious, Professor Keller's reflections shows philosophy, or for that matter academics, in its simplest yet most currently significant form: rather than bombarded with theoretical jargon (read nonsense if you wish), the reader is presented with a history of a specific knowledge (the biologist's explanation of "life" in the early and mid 20th. century). The preface serves as an outline of how to read this book, and, when effective, sets the context for reading any similar epistemological analysis. Unlike many other "postmodern" philosophical works, this book fits beautifully in the context it sets. It is multi-dimensional - feminists, philosophers, biologists, and others will benefit from incisive commentary which is extremely pertinent to their field. As a work which is set (and sets itself) in the context of epistemological relativism, it has one drawback: within the next few years, I expect its relevance to shift, from work of contemporary genius and immediate relevance to harbinger of new epistomological foundations. Still, it is refreshing to read a work of genius by a living person; if you have not realized this yet, I recommend you take a few days to read this book and be enlightened . . .
