Hold the Schmaltz, This is Jewish Cooking
Wonderful recipes, new versions of family favorites without the schmaltz.

I am sending it to my mother for Hannukah!

An important and accessible reference.
In this book, Joan Nathan manages to combine history, culture, and very good recipes. More than cooking book, Ms. Nathan offers menus for the same holidays from different Jewish backgrounds. Each recipe is complete, fully annotated and easy to follow. For cooks and/or readers looking to enlarge their knowledge of various Jewish food traditions, The Jewish Holiday Kitchen is a wonderful place to start.

Ms Nathan is a wonder-her recipes remind me of my grandma!!
I now own several of Ms Nathan's cookbooks, and I absolutely recommend them to all my friends and give them to family as gifts.!. All the recipes bring back so many good childhood memories. The recipes are easy to use, easy to read, and I love searching for old recipes and finding them in her book!!! thank you Ms Nathan.

Jewish Question: A Marxist Interpretation
Published in Paperback by Pathfinder Press (1971)
Authors: Abram Leon and Nathan Weinstock
Amazon base price: $17.95
Used price: $13.00
Average review score:

How anti-semitism came about and how it can be ended.
This book answers both Zionists who view Jews as the "chosen people" and the justifiers of Jew hatred, by giving a materialist explanation for the historical persecution of the Jews. By examining Jewish history from antiquity through the middle ages, Leon shows how it was the social role of Jews as merchants and traders and moneylenders that led to their persecution. As the only group in feudal society allowed to engage in trade they became a people-class. In this special role Jews played an essential economic role but were despised for it by the feudal aristocracy and this is what led to their segregation in ghettos and the hostility and attacks they faced.

The author, an anti -fascist fighter and communist organizer who wrote the book in Nazi occupied Belgium in 1940, explains that with the rise of capitalism the special social role that Jews played in the economy disappeared. He points out that while capitalism eliminated the special economic role that led to Jew hatred, it is a system that has brought the prejudices and hatreds of earlier societies into the modern world to help keep the oppressed and exploited divided. It is only with the elimination of this system that Jew hatred can be eliminated.

Against Anti-semitism and Zionism
This heroic book helped me understand why fascits and other rightists rely on anti-Jewish propaganda and why the Zionist response is a dead end. Abram Leon was a Jewish Marxist and working class leader in Nazi-occupied Belgium until being shipped to his death in Auschwitz. He points out that Jews are a social grouping that played a dynamic role during feudalism but have no role as a distinct class under capitalism. Because capitalist society will not assimilate them, they become ready scapegoats. The solution Leon proposes is to join with other workers in the fight for a socialist society in place of capitalism, which is the root of racist movements. Leon's richly detailed history of the Jewish people challenges the myths of the Zionists. The fact that the imperialist nation of Israel has become the most dangerous place for Jews to live underscores Leon's point about the danger of Zionism.

Capitalism & Anti-Semitism by an inspiring fighter
Abram Leon, a young Belgian revolutionary who died fighting in the resistance to the Nazis in World War II, shows how anti-Semitism and capitalism are linked. He illustrates the special history of the Jews as a "people class," persecuted and manipulated by capitalism. This Marxist study shows that Zionism, rather than aiding the liberation of the Jewish people, aids imperialism, the main breeder of anti-Semitism and Jew hatred. NathanWeinstock's introduction explaining the life and struggle of Abram Leon is inspiring. Message: 1 of 1

Life of General Nathan Bedford Forrest
Published in Paperback by R Bemis Pub Ltd (1997)
Author: John A. Wyeth
Amazon base price: $17.95
Average review score:

Fascinating study of a great man.
Wyeth's biography of Forrest stands as one of the best written about him. It is a 'must read' for any serious student of the civil war as it was fought in the west (Tennessee, Alabama, Mississippi and Kentucky). While other biographies have been written (such as, "Bedford Forrest and His Critter Company", by Ansrew Nelson Lytle and "First with the Most Forrest" by Robert Selph Henry), they don't have the breadth that Wyeth's book has. Of course, the only biography actually reviewed and approved by General Forrest was Jordan and Pryor's "The Campaigns of Lieut. Gen. Forrest and of Forrest's Cavalry", but this work is flawed by a markedly biased position on the part of the authors and by their inability to access the Official Records. On the other hand, they did interview Forrest and most of his surviving authors and Wyeth drew much of his material from this work. Still, for the definitive story of Forrest's life, Wyeth's book is the acknowledged source.

THE BEST BIOGRAPHY OF GENERAL FORREST WRITTEN
THIS IS THE BEST BOOK I HAVE READ ON THE LIFE OF GENERAL NATHAN BEDFORD FORREST. IT IS WELL DOCUMENTED ON THE POINTS OF INTEREST THAT HAS CAUSED A BLIMISH ON THIS GREAT MAN'S LIFE. IT IS A MUST READ FOR ANYONE SEEKING THE TRUTH ABOUT GENERAL FORREST. IT CLEARLY SHOWS HE IS THE GREATEST CAVALRYMAN OF THE WAR. NO ONE ELSE COMES CLOSE TO HIS ACCOMPLISHMENTS AND VICTORIES ON EITHER SIDE OF THE GREAT WAR.

Excellent history on Forrest!
This book gives exquisite detail into the life of the South's Greatest General! It is a must read for any Civil War enthusiast. I highly recomend this book for anyone interested in the South.

A deep book
The book is deeply spiritual get it

Depth - Not Hype
New Agers beware...you can no longer say that the nature of the Psyche can not be explained. Take the time and the struggle to read this book, it will be worth all the effort. I have been studing alchemy for years and Schwartz-Salant brillantly helped clear up most of the muddy areas. There is much knowledge and wisdom in this book and as there is no way to enlighten someone in the space of this review - read it and see for yourself. This is for anyone who has dappled in Magic, is a therapist, studied Jung's works on Alchemy, or thinks they "know" what the astral realms are or if one does, wants to add the "science."

This book has changed my life
I can't begin to explain how this book has had a positive effect on my life. I think of it constantly and how it relates to me. It is an absolutely brilliant work of Psychology. Thank you Nathan Salant.

A Taste of Murder: Diabolically Delicious Recipes from Contemporary Mystery Writers
Published in Hardcover by Dell Books (Paperbacks) (07 September, 1999)
Authors: Jo Grossman and Robert Weibezahl

Used price: $22.71

A Taste of Murder
What a delightful book! Beside including some hiliarious recipes like "Susan Silverman's Boiled Water" from Robert B. Parker, there are interesting recipes from a number of mystery writers and places associated with mysteries. I plan to try the Tea Scones from Brown's Hotel (Agatha Christie's Bertram's Hotel) first. This is a must for mystery readers.

Worth every penny!
Mysteries and menus go hand in hand. Just picking up A Taste of Murder and quickly wading through it, I knew it was a recipe book that would never leave my kitchen.

Readers and chefs can expect great recipes, informative thoughts, witty remarks, and bits and pieces from Jo Grossman and Robert Weibezahl, who created the wonderful book, and the mystery writers themselves. An impressive introduction tells readers about the relationship between mysteries and menus, and each chapter adds a little more a long with the recipes. Under the chapter headings of First Instincts, Choose Your Poison, The Pot Thickens, Dressed to Kill, Kneadless Violence, Quick and Painless, Pasta Mortem, Something's Fishy, Fowl Play, Secret Meat-ings, No Place to Meat, Faithful Sidekicks, Revenge is Sweet, and Just Desserts, you will find some delicious, tempting meals. Expect to find recipes like, Bill Crider's manly recipe of Sausage-Cheese Appetizer, Cathie John's tasty Cincinnati Chili recipe with a dash of chocolate. Peter Robinson's tempting taste of Warm Pear and Stilton Salad, Sara Hoskins Frommer's bread recipe called Fred Lundquist's Sourdough Oatmeal Bread, Sue Grafton's Kinsey Millhone Peanut Butter and Pickle Sandwich recipe, Parnell Hall's Stanley's Head Pesto pasta, Anne Perry's Fish Pie, Leslie Glass's April Woo's Crispy Hacked Duck, Penny Warner's Hangtown Fry, Kate Charles's recipe for Quick Vegetarian Cassoulet, H.R.F. Keating's side dish recipe of Carrot Haliva, L.L. Thrasher's Boiled Cookies, and Jonathan Gash's British cake recipe called Parkin.

If you own one of those rare Bed & Breakfasts that includes live mysteries in the vacation weekend package, or know anyone who does, this is one recipe book that will add to the fun. It's a wonderful grouping of talent and taste. The recipes are worthy on their own, but it's nice to have a little mystery with one's meal - don't you think? Others must agree because it been nominated in the Anthony Mystery Awards for Best Non-Fiction.

You can't go wrong spending the dough on this one.

Yum! Cooking for a good cause.
What great fun it was to participate in this very worthwhile project and to discover that my fellow mystery writers are such fantastic cooks. The recipes are varied, well presented, and easy to follow. But even if you're not interested in stirring up something diabolically delicious, "A Taste of Murder" also serves up entertaining vignettes and bits of insider information with every recipe.

Very Timely and Very Neccesary
This is a phenominal book for Christians of all stripes. It is very well thought out and incredibly well written. My only complaint is that Nathan sometimes goes so far to show us how to reach out a loving hand but it is hard to see clearly how far we are to go. The stuff about the environmentalist surely must have a line. I am from Seattle and I know that there is definatly a differance between what I see as "saving" the earth and what many of the other people here do. But then again all of us as Christians need to stretch further and if Nathan doesn't raise the bar (which he most certainly does better than anyone) than we will all use excuses and prejudices when dealling with those not like us.

The welcome of the Kingdom
Every evangelical church leader in America should have a copy of this book. Rich Nathan believes that, just as Jesus welcomed prostitutes, tax-collectors and other "sinners" into the Kingdom and did not view them as his enemies, so we should do the same to those whose views and lifestyles we find in opposition to ours: post-modernists, feminists, homosexuals, new-agers, and liberals. Not only that, but people in these groups have much to teach the church if only we would listen. Often in a book such as this, there is concern that the author is soft on sin. Nothing could be further from the truth in this case. Nathan is uncompromising with the issue of sin, but is also uncompromising on the issue of God's grace. By modeling love and acceptance at the church he pastors in Columbus, Ohio, Nathan has seen many transformed lives of people who were formerly far away from Christ. In this book, Nathan examines many "hot-button" issues among Christians, and discusses them in a very even-handed manner. Very educational, and very necessary reading.

Rich Nathans Best book ever
Rich Nathan is a great writer and a great pastor and his Book Who is my enemy is a really great book because it tells about his life and stuff that happend to him

Basic Algebra II
Published in Hardcover by W H Freeman & Co. (1989)
Author: Nathan Jacobson
Amazon base price: $86.95
Average review score:

Not that basic
It is indeed not an undergraduate level book, but Jaconson I&II
form a great overall introduction to algebra for the budding
algebraist. We used Jacobson I as the intro algebra text for
graduate students at Berkeley, and it can be recommended for
first or second year students (and beyond.) It forms a part of]
the trilogy of "Don't Let the Name Fool You" of not that basic
mathematics book with Weil's Basic Number Theory and Serre's
A Course in Arithmetic.

Excellent
Basic Algebra II is much better organized than Basic Algebra I, and it is an outstanding reference for the algebra that every Ph.D. graduate student should know. Perhaps the decision to prove Wedderburn's theorem via Morita theory was unfortunate since it makes the former seem more inaccessible than it really is, but otherwise I cannot fault the exposition. One word of warning: if your main interest is algebraic number theory, then Lang's _Algebra_ is probably a better reference since Jacobson omits several topics that are crucial for the number theorist.

Not really for undergraduates
The claim by Book News that this is a book addressed to undergraduates is just plain wrong. In fact, this book is even difficult for the average graduate student. The title `Basic Algebra' might be at the root of this misundestanding. This is a classic book and a standard reference for abstract algebra at a relatively advanced level.

Nathan

Authors: Nathan Ballard and Michael Rogers
Amazon base price: $24.95

Average review score:

An exceptional life
"Nathan," the autobiographical story of Nathan Ballard, is the moving narrative of a man who has lived with cerebral palsy much longer than the usual life span allows someone in his condition. The reader is given a world-wind look at the trials and accomplishments of Ballard's life. The book immediately engages the reader and teaches him or her not to feel sorry for the disabled. Ballard has accomplished much more in his life than many people who are in perfect health. He is multi-lingual and has participated in many national activities regarding the well being of disabled persons, including the panel which helped create the Americans with Disabilities Act. Overall, "Nathan" is very easy to read and gives great detail of each period in Ballard's life. However, the book does tend to skip from one point in time to another. This can be discouraging to the reader in several instances, where it jumps quickly from childhood to the present. The character development in "Nathan" is exceptional. Readers quickly feel as though they know Ballard, his family and his friends. "Nathan" will truly open your eyes to the life of a disabled person. It is amazing to hear a first hand account of how people in wheelchairs are actually treated by their peers. Ballard is a fixture on the University of Alabama campus and is very friendly and positive to the students. As a student at Alabama, I know the author and his determination to succeed in his writing career. A screenplay is currently being written on Nathan, and he is now working on a book of poetry.

Nathan, The Real Deal
Many a year ago, when Nathan approached me on the University of Alabama campus to read a book he had spent 20 years writing, I did not think much of it. After spending that weekend reading what then were mere pages in a box, my life has forever been changed. My perspective on life and my attitude toward life has been irrevocably altered. Nathan's brutal honestly and total willingness to sacrifice his all to make a differnce resonates on each page as Nathan's story is brought to life. I wish everyone could read this book. Is it a literary masterpice, probably not. Will it change your life, I bet it will. If you are looking for a book that will inspire you and lift you up, this is the one. And, as one that has been blessed to have gotten to know the man behind the book, yes Nathan is the real deal!

All I can say is: "Wow! What an incredible life!"
This guy is something else. I heard about him from a friend who read a story of his friendship with Dave Matthews online somewhere. When I bought the book, I thought there would be something about DMB in it. They are mentioned at the end, but this book is what it claims to be. It's about Nathan Ballard. What an interesting life. The book reads well, it is full of surprises and keeps you guessing.

I had no idea what life for a badly disabled person was like. The writers do a fantastic job of spelling out what the experience "feels" like, inside and outside. Nathan is honest about himself. He doesn't spare self-criticism. To me, that makes him more human. He's funny, too. I can see why Dave must like him so much. The dude has been through a lot.

The middle is a little lengthy about some lady who tried to rip him off and steal the book, but it doesn't detract from the story too much. If you are reading this, then by all means buy it. It's a great story. When I finished it I gave it to my mom.

A Treasury of Jewish Folklore
Published in Paperback by Bantam Books (1980)
Author: Nathan Ausubel

Used price: $2.36
Collectible price: $9.49
Average review score:

What a great book!
Darn near encycopedic tome of folklore, but very readable, colorful stuff. Regardless of your faith, I think you'll find this book as full of wisdom, authenticity, wonder, and humor as I did. Desperately too bad that it's out of print.

A dynamic source of Jewish culture, spirit, and wit
Like one of the other reviewers, I started reading this book when I was a child, probably around 11, and continue to read it and reread it. It has some of the most wonderful Jewish jokes that exist. The most amazing thing for me personally, however, which makes me want to recommend it to others, is that I am a person who identifies a lot with being Jewish and it feels as though a huge amount of my Jewishness, and how it has affected my thinking and way of being, comes from Ausubel's Treasure of Jewish Folklore!!! I think it is one of the most enjoyable ways that a person could immerse him/herself in the essence of Jewish culture.

Review
I started reading my father's copy at the age of 6 (I'm now 40 and I have the 1960 edition). It has been a huge part of understanding my Judaism. It's also a "better mousetrap" of a book; the selections are well-written, informative, funny and charming. I had the book out again recently to learn and perform a couple of the songs.
