Intelligent Spaces: Architecture for the Information Age

Author: Otto Riewoldt
Amazon base price: $65.00
Average review score:

Visual
Extraordinary graphical and visual account of new workspaces that have redefined old spaces and old concepts. Although not particularily descriptive language wise, this book has a feel and look all its own.

intelligent, deep and beautiful - a winning combination!
this was one book i was happy to receive. a lot of nice photographs, followed by plans, elevations, preliminary drawings - and not too elaborated texts of the thinking and working process. At the end of the book you will find short biographies of the designers and architects, and credits for the companies who took part in the making of, in case you are so lucky as to need them for your own projects. a beautiful coffee table book for those who love aesthetic things, and serious learning material for those who want to learn a bit more.

The Making of the 1996 Farm Act
Published in Hardcover by Iowa State University Press (1999)
Authors: Lyle P. Schertz and Otto C. Doering
Amazon base price: $44.99
Average review score:

A View into the Politics of the Farm Act
This book generally looks at the political issues and concerns surrounding passage of the 1996 Farm Act. It takes the reader to developments and dealings in Congress back to 1994, giving the reader more than just floor debates or reports. Probably the best aspect to the book is that it does provide the reader with the context and concerns of both the Republicans and Democrats throughout the lengthy time the legislation was being debated. Simply put, this is background for legislative history of the Farm Act.

What I really think this book lacked was reference to the concerns or direct input outside the political realm. The legislation was intended to restructure programatic problems within the government, in order to ultimately benefit the family farm and the wider agricultural community. And despite mention of some concerns, I felt this was mostly a discussion of politics, not farming. Just be aware of what your are buying: a book on politics, not an informative book on impact to farming.

informative, relevant to everyone - not just farmers
People do not realize the importance of the family farm in their everyday lives. This book tells the details of the political workings behind the infamous farm bill.

An excellent index makes this a winner.

Modern Biology

Needs To Be Proofread
The book has some errors in it and is hard to read. Most science textbooks do not read like best-sellers, but this one tends to have some awkward phrasings that should have been adjusted to provide students an easier time of reading the passages. My favorite general biology textbook is still Raven and Johnson's "Biology."

Top of the line in Biology.
This book is amazing. You will know all you need to know of life and beyond with this amazing book. It goes through cells, to genetics, to anatomy, animals, bacteria, disections, maps of organisms such as the human body, animals bodies and etc. This book is top of the line and couldn't get any better. I highly recommend this book to anyone wanting to know anything about biology, or "the study of life". Ha, see what I already learned.

Mr. Lunch Highly Professional Pencils Plus Eraser
Published in Hardcover by Chronicle Books (1999)
Authors: J. Otto Seibold and Vivian Walsh
Amazon base price: $9.95
Average review score:

Frankly, I'm disappointed.
I love Mr. Lunch. So when I first saw that Chronicle (the publisher) was soliciting a Mr. Lunch Pencil Box with Eraser, I couldn't wait. And when the planned publishing date came and went with no Pencil Box, I figured boy, they must be improving the pencils and making everything extra special. Special. The pencils are blue (six of them) or they are green (the other six). They have the words "Mr. Lunch" written on them, and the box has a picture of Mr. Lunch, but otherwise...you might as well buy Pokemon pencils. sigh.

Double Wedgemund Deluxe, please
Mr. Lunch means a lot of things to a lot of people. Personally, I think he represents the toaster oven. The toaster oven is an item that is approaching extinction. Mr. Lunch is also approaching extinction. The toaster oven can warm up many items such as bread, bagels, English muffins, and even some pastries. Mr. Lunch can also do all of these things. For this reason, I highly recommend these pencils. The eraser isn't too shabby, either.

Why Christian Men Don't Date
Published in Paperback by WinePress Publishing (1996)
Author: Otto Haugland
Amazon base price: $16.99
Average review score:

The Spectrums of dating Captured
Me and a friend of mine both bought this book and enjoyed it very much it was a little too short on some of the spectrums of dating, however as a single Christian man I definitely see many of the dating categories in the church I attend and personally I fit some of those spectrums as well. A good read overall.

Enjoyable, but careful; you might learn something
The only problem with this book is the title. It implies that the book is only about why Christian men can't get dates; it's also about why Christian women can't get dates. Humorous but with a lesson.

The World of the Huns: Studies in Their History and Culture
Published in Hardcover by University of California Press (1973)
Authors: Otto J. Maenchen-Helfen, Otto Helfen, Max Knight, and Otto Manchen-Helfen
Amazon base price: $55.00
Average review score:

Incomplete Masterpiece
This is a remarkable work. It has all the bearings of a lifetime's achievement, all too noticable in the unfinished nature of the book. Maenchen-Helfin died before it was finished and the book was edited together by Max Knight from the author's papers. It is encyclopedic. If you want to know anything about the Huns then consult this book, E A Thompson's "The Huns" formerly "Attila and the Huns" and P Heather's section in the Cambridge Ancient History Vol. XIII. If it's not in these books then it's not worth knowing. This book, more than the others, is indispensible but difficult to use. It is patchy and often unwieldy but breathtaking in scope and vision. I would highly recommend this book to anyone wanting to know about the Huns who also has the time to work with the book to get the information out.

Masterpiece on the Huns
This is truely a masterpiece on the Huns. The sad part is that it is incomplete. It is far superior to the work of Thompson in the Huns even in this incomplete state. The analytical methodical scholarship, typical of savants of the German school, is seen throughout the book. This is supported by the author's firsthand experience amidst the Altaic nomads. One can only imagine the out come if Maenchen-Helfen had lived longer. I do not see scholars of his stature anymore in Central Asian studies.

Angora Wool Ranching and Goals in Rabbit Raising
Published in Paperback by Diamond Farm Book Pubns (2000)
Authors: William E. Otto and Hedley B. Burden
Amazon base price: $12.95
Average review score:

A bit old-fashioned
I get the feeling the 2 sections of this book were written by old British professors about 80 years ago. This is just from the tone of the writing. The first part spends a deal of time talking about how many angora rabbit ranchers "live in small tumbledown shacks in the back of beyond and are supported solely by their ranching activities" (paraphrasing mine). However, the information is good and fairly timeless. If you are considering raising angora bunnies this is a good place to start.

The best single-volume offering
Edward Crankshaw's 'Bismark' is quite simply the finest one-volume edition available. Written with Crankshaw's customary elegance, wit and style, this is a perfect introduction to the student of Bismark and German unifiacation.

Brown Tide Rising: Metaphors of Latinos in Contemporary American Public Discourse
Published in Hardcover by Univ of Texas Press (2002)
Author: Otto Santa Ana
Amazon base price: $55.00
Average review score:

Worthy dissection of public discourse ¿ while tedious
Brown Tide Rising is not one of those social science books with a beat. No one will soon convert it to a hit song or into a blockbuster movie. Reading it is tedious without being overly complicated, but didn't all our mothers make us eat our broccoli? Some books need to be read even when we don't want to read them.

Santa Ana walks the reader through his analysis of metaphors utilized in the Los Angeles Times when reporting on three California propositions presented to the electorate in the 1990's. All had direct and potentially adverse repercussions for Latinos. This book carefully deconstructs the ways in which the parameters of the debates were constructed by looking at the language, and metaphors, used in newspaper accounts.

The power in Santa Ana's work lies in his explanation of the idea of public discourse. Public discourse is the imaginal limitation of perspectives. This narrowing of perspectives is accomplished by almost subliminal use of metaphor so that the legitimate contours of an issue are restricted by assumption and adoption of a specific cognitive framework. Because this framework is undeclared and public, it serves to significantly restrict public debate and provides an assumptive, public heuristic that easily substantiates bias, injustice, and discrimination.

Few in America continue to defend ethnic and racial pejoratives. Their demeaning use is without social acceptance or approval. Santa Ana clearly shows that the metaphors utilized in public discourse are substantially more pejorative than the most blatant verbal slur.

I hope that many will read this work. Awareness of the power inherent in the formation of public discourse, a power that is quite subtle and pervasive, can only be controlled by an intelligent and insightful public.
