The Gentle Art of Mentoring

This is THE book for women interested in becoming mentors.
After hearing Mrs. Otto speak several years ago I knew that I wanted to be the type of woman who could be a mentor. Mrs. Otto presents the basis in a very candid manner, yet one that allows you to see that mentoring is not just something that you decide to do. It is a relationship with another person and that must grow in the heart before it can become a reality. It is not a plan or a program, but the in-depth look at the way the heart must be involved to truly be the type of woman that GOD has intended you to be, so that you may model that for someone else. I highly recommend the book. After several years of prayer, asking GOD to place a young woman in my life that I could mentor, I was blessed.....and I truly cherish this young woman, her husband, and their daughter. And wonder of wonders...not all of the mentoring has come from me.....She has also been a teacher. Read Mrs. Otto's book...and pray that GOD will place that young woman to mentor in your life.

partially changed my life
This book is wonderful if you are a person who longs to be more organized like me. I actually took some of the suggestions and purchased a planner! I even use it. I haven't implemented all the suggestions but I am better than I used to be. I also bought some storage boxes and put some clutter in the garage on shelves. I still have a ways to go but this book will get me there. I even bought a copy for my mom who is in worse shape than me!

Gibbs Measures and Phase Transitions
Published in Hardcover by Walter de Gruyter, Inc. (1988)
Author: Hans-Otto Georgii
Amazon base price: $131.15
Average review score:

Gibbs measure: the reference book
"Gibbs Measures and Phase Transitions" is the first book completely dedicated to the study of the description of the so-called Gibbs measures, which gives a mathematical formalism -- initiated by Landford, Ruelle and Dobrushin -- for the physical phenomenons of phase transition. Links are made with the ergodic theory: the notions of entropy and pressure are introduced. Whereas the author is a specialist of the domain, the book is self-contained: the necessary results of probability theory are essentially recalled. He describes both discrete systems as Ising models and continuous systems as gaussian models. The proofs given in main chapter are more readable than the original proofs in research article, for example in the chapter on Gaussian models and in the chapters on contour methods and chessboard estimate. It is clearly a must for people interested in mathematical physics.

An beautifully illustrated tribute to the Getty
A long-time fan of J.Otto Seibold and Vivian Walsh's books, I purchased this from amazon.com for my boss who will travel to the Getty this Fall. I had a hard time giving it to her, because I immediately fell in love with it. Seibold/Walsh are known for their children's books full of whimsical drawings and cool stories. This book, while it takes you through the Getty (by combining Seibold's drawings and actual artwork), sticks to the overall style of their children's books. It's both for kids and adults, and is so fun to read and just look at. One of my favourite things about their books is that you can spot something you didn't notice before with each reading. I highly recommend it, even if you have never heard about the Getty or never plan to go there.

The contextual foundations of Gothic Architecture
As an art historian, museum curator, and traveler to France I found this book very useful. Most books on Gothic Architecture look at style as though it exists for its own sake. Simson places the beginnings of Gothic Architecture into the intellectual and historical context that gave this archetectual style its birth. The two sections that I most enjoyed were the theology of light that Suger was trying to express through architecture and the historical/political life of Suger. Both of these elements had a profound effect on the developement and impact of the Abby Church of St. Denis. This book represents architectural history as it should be written. Simson's approach is only possible because of his ability to draw upon a broad and deep educational framework. Reading this book caused me to lament the shallowness of much of what passes for scholarly training and writing in our time. You don' t have to be an architectural historian to enjoy this book. But you should be passionate about ideas. Simson shows us how ideas have consequences. This is one of the best books I have ever read.

A Comedy of a Mystery
If you've ever seen George Burns and Gracie Allen you'll love this book. Philo Vance is at his best, but Gracie and George steal the show. The mystery is a good one with a great twist ending and well worth the read.

good book for first time owner
When I got my hamster, I checked a half dozen hamster books out of the library. This one and "The Hamster" by Betsy Sikora Siino were the only two I held onto. This book has lots of information about how to handle hamsters, what to feed them, how to house them, how to tell if they're ill, plus info on what to do during vacations, is it OK to take the hamster with you, etc. There are lots of very cute color and black and white hamster pictures. All in all a great book, and intended for recreational pet owners, not breeders -- there's very little info on breeding.

Handel: A Documentary Biography

Author: Otto Erich Deutsch
Amazon base price: $112.50
Average review score:

An important book for Handel studies.
For anyone who has embarked on a research project concerning Handel and his life, this is one of the first books I would recommend. This a vast source of reprinted documentation, from personal letters to newspaper articles and contemporary criticism of Handel's life and work, all arranged in chronological order; - therefore it is an invaluable study aid. Definitely worth a five-star rating.

For Parents and Students
Finally, a book that looks at all aspects of finding and funding training for a career after high school. This book looks at colleges, vo-tech, even the military. It's easy to read and relate to, and answers the questions you thought were too silly to ask. Dr. Otto helps make you an informed consumer and really gives the parents the tools necessary to help their children. Bravo.

More Insightful and Disturbing News from Otto
Dr. Kernberg has looked deep into the psyche and what he finds is frightening.

Despite his difficult (at times willfully so, it seems) prose, he is worth heeding. For anyone who has seen an organization or corporation mysteriously fail, but who has felt that there is an unnamed and elusive logic to its fall, would do well to read this book. Where others see mystery, Kernberg names names. He locates dynamics at work in individuals and organizations and details their impact on the life of said groups. He doesn't provide magical answers but his theories are useful because, once one gets beyond the pessimism and the difficulty of the ideas, they seem, frankly, correct, in a gut-instinct way.

Everyone has a complex relation to their leaders, and Kernbeg explains the give-and-take of such strange intuitive feelings, the traces of which haunt all institutions. Particularly charming is Kernberg's insistence that a "slight paranoia" is a healthy attitude in a leader, to fight off envious attacks. An analyst and the head of the IPA, he knows whereof he speaks.
