Thorough overview of traditional Western music.
Otto Karolyi has written a thorough and interesting overview of the field of traditional Western music. A novice might find it difficult to grasp the contents completely without a teacher's assistance, but any serious student of music will find it a great introduction to the subject. It is a good read for anyone interested in Western music. I find it very helpful as a review when helping college students prepare for certification tests in music education or for the GRE specialty test in music. It covers a broad range of issues at a deep enough level to make it a perfect review, or introductory, resource. It would also be an excellent study guide for anyone taking college level placement or exemption tests in music theory.

Introduction to the laryngeal theory

The best introduction...
to the "occult qualities" of modern Indo-European phonology. The H like sounds postulated by Ferdinand Saussure and discovered when Hittite was deciphered provoked a "foundation crisis" in IE linguistics comparable to the Pythagorean discovery of irrationals or the debates over infinitesimals in mathematics. Lindeman covers the history and linguistics of this topic in a highly commendable fashion.

The View from a Reformed Christian Perspective
Otto Scott pulls no punches in his evaluation of James I of England (James VI of Scotland). Scott's writing is easy to read and fast paced, yet of a high scholarly quality. His solidly Christian perspective is unusual today. Look for other books by Scott. I recommend his book on Robespierre and _The Great Christian Revolution_. Highly recommended -- you will not be disappointed.

Some of the best juvenile fiction written in the last 20 yrs
This is an epistolary novel. Dumas is in jail waiting to be sentenced for manslaughter. His lawyer tells the 15 year old that he might be able to avoid prison if he can make the judge understand why he was involved in a gunfight at a poker table. The tale of this refugee from a Mississippi orphanage is wonderfully writ, with the yellowed eye of a poolroom habitue.

A great early reference about Tuva
This highly informative book is a great addition to any Tuvaphile's library. It is a great depiction of the land, people, and culture of Tuva during a pivotal point in the timy nation's history. Mänchen-Helfen's account of his personal experiences is very open-minded and accepting for coming from a European of his time. The text covers many topics ranging from government and living conditions to herding and tobacco. This book flows too, and is recommended for anyone interested in other cultures. In general: a great book.

A great way to increase typing speed!
I teach typing at a middle school and we recently started using this program. My students and I found it to be a great change from the standard drills we were using. They loved the way the programs made them practice the keys that gave them the most trouble and the fact that, in the individualized practices, the program would push them to try typing a little faster in the repetitions. I liked it so much, I bought a copy for my machine at home. My whole family is working with it to increase their typing skills. I highly recommend this program.

L. Annaei Senecae: Tragoediae, Incertorvm Avctorvm Hercvles Oetaevs Octavia
Published in Hardcover by Clarendon Pr (1995)
Authors: Lucius Annaeus Seneca and Otto Zwierlein
Amazon base price: $35.00
Used price: $22.99

The definitive edition
A much needed updated text, impeccable scholarship. This edition, the first scientific rescension of the tragedies, contains many corrections to the (until now) standard edition of Otto Wurtheim.

One telling example: Analysis of the MSs corrects a line of the opening speech of Octavia: (O lux semper funesta mihi/tempore ab illo/lux es tenebris invisa magis!) by changing the first lux to nox, bringing out the contrast which had been lost and eliminating a rather clumsy redundancy.

A must-have for anyone reading Seneca in the original

Secrets of the Orgasm Revealed
Dr. Otto's book "The Liberated Orgasm" presents new insights into the human capacity to experience orgasm. The author's research has revealed distinct and newly identified orgasmic potential, but what is so exceptional about this book is the author's ability to help the reader understand how best to tap into their own potential to experience orgasm, both in the feeling of and quality of the orgasm itself, and in ways that the reader may not have realized were possible. The information provided in this book is a sexual breakthrough in much the same way as was the identification of the G-Spot. I highly recommend this book to people with open minds and adventuresome spirits.
