An architect's man friday for climate responsive design.
A fantastic book for architectural design based on climatic conditions. A book by the aid of which a building virtually designs itself. A pity that such a good book should be so rare.

Marketing Communication Management: A Holistic Approach for Increased Profitability

Cut through the marcomm fluff!
I've studied the original Norwegian edition and Ottesen's holistic view is an epiphany. If you're as frustrated as I was with the lack of stratetic orientation and vision in market communication literature this book is what you need to read. It's not a magic bullet, but the insightfulness of Mr. Ottesen will make you go back and reconsider your communication strategy, especially the way you prioritize the resources. The best recommendation is that ad agencies will hate this book!

Mozart a Documentary Biography

Deutsch gives it all...and then some!
Mozart: A Documentary Biography is, in a word, a masterpiece. Deutsch goes to great lengths in order to provide the researcher (or avid Mozart fan) with the most complete secondary source available today. It is well organized, clear, and easy to maneuver through the massive documents written by Mozart, his family, colleagues, and critics. His recent publication of additional documents is a stunning testimony of dedication to one's subject. This book is a must-have in a Mozart library. I recommend it unreservedly.

My Nightingale Is Singing

Warning for puffy eyes!
"My Nightingale is Singing" is a rare gem by Astrid Lindgren. Not one of her more famous books (even among her short stories, which never made it as big as her novels), it is nevertheless one of her most beautiful ones. When I feel like I need a good cry, this is a book that always does the trick.

Malin - Maria in the English translation - is a girl whose parents have died of tuberculosis, and she's forced to live in the poor house, where nothing is fun or beautiful. Malin can hardly stand it, until she hears the words: "My linden plays, my nightingale is singing..."

Although this is a picture book, it isn't meant for very small children. Buy it for them when they have reached school age and are old enough both to know what an orphan is and to enjoy a really sad story. Or buy it for yourself while you're waiting for them to grow old enough...

Johnson/Kennedy Whiz kids Unmasked
At long last the true reason for the State Department's preference for foreign nations over US citizens is unmasked. This is a powerful story about how those who hate our national sovereignty sought to worm their proteges into the SD over decades. One man, Otto Otepka stood in their way. This story tells how the Kennedy/Johnson Whiz Kids sought to destroy Otto and unveils his true heroism-a Horatio at the Gates! Fascinating looks at how General MacArthur was deprived of safeguarding his troops by Dean Rusk and how our military, the Cuban exiles and the CIA were sold out by the Whiz Kids are fully documented putting Bamfield's latest work to shame. What a history lesson!

Otto Es UN Rinoceronte/Otto Is a Rhino
Published in Paperback by Ediciones Alfaguara, S.A. (1983)
Author: Ole Lund Kirkegaard
Amazon base price: $6.25
Average review score:

Hillariously funny.
I can't vote for the translation of this thing, but the Danish original is hillarious. Kirkegaards stories all have a particular air of genuinely realistic absurdity about them, and this one is no exception. A couple of boys, as boys should be, find a bewitched pencil, draw a rhino on the wallpaper with it and the rhino comes alive. Very friendly rhino actually, it's yelllow like the wallpaper and they name it Otto. From there one things get more and more funny. Everybody lives happily ever after of course. This is the kind of story REAL dad's read to their kids...

A GREAT Science fiction story!
Otto from Otherwhere is a terriffic science fiction book! It is about a boy named Ahto (which sounds like Otto in English), who lived in a different world before coming through the fog on one January day. Paula and her little brother Peter come across him on their way to school, take him with them, and pretend he is a cousin from Brazil. In Ahto's world, everyone has 3 fingers, and no nose. The kids at school think that he is weird because of that. This is a terrific story about having to learn to adjust to a new lifestyle, and others adjusting to having someone new around.

Otto Klemperer - His Life and Times
Published in Hardcover by Cambridge University Press (1996)
Author: Peter Heyworth
Amazon base price: $100.00
Used price: $119.95
Average review score:

Wonderful, readable 2 volume biography of a fascinating man.
If you have an interest in classical music, then the name Otto Klemperer will be well known to you. Here is a beautifully presented two volume biography, very much a labour of love on the part of the author. A great read, and I particularly like having the notes at the foot of the page, not in an appendix.

Both volumes can be bought separately, but together come in a handsome slipcase.

I have read many biographies of famous conductors, and this ranks alongside Richard Osborne's book on Herbert von Karajan, and (best of all) Michael Kennedy's masterly and moving 'Barbirolli, Conductor Laureate', which I fear may be out of print.
