Classic Ellery Queen - Among His Best Stories
We join Ellery and his father, Inspector Richard Queen, in an unfamiliar habitat, a remote rugged road in a forested mountainous area in upstate New York. Tired, somewhat uncertain of their directions, with night falling, the situation suddenly worsens as they find themselves cutoff by a forest fire. Following a barely visible rutted road upward, they find temporary safety at a sprawling lodge nestled on the top of Arrow mountain. As the fire below slowly encircles them, the Queens find themselves involved in a bizarre murder mystery.

Certainly, the situation is contrived. Dr. Xavier's work on Siamese twins in an isolated mountain lodge is a bit fantastic. The clues are supremely subtle. And yet this mystery is highly effective. Under the stress of the approaching fire, Ellery too hurriedly offers solutions, seemingly masterful examples of pure logic, but flawed nonetheless. (The reader may be reminded of another remarkable Ellery Queen story, The Greek Coffin Mystery.)

Ellery and Inspector Queen refuse to let the relentless forest fire dissuade them from continuing their investigation. The drama and suspense shifts back and forth between the danger posed by the ever advancing fire and the more immediate threat, the likelihood that the unknown killer will murder again.

The Siamese Twin Mystery (October, 1933) is a good example of the deductive mystery genre that was especially popular in 1920s, 1930s, and 1940s. To assist the reader in unraveling the mystery, it comes complete with a playful description of the cast of characters and a floor plan of the ground level of Dr. Xavier's lodge. Surprisingly, it is missing Ellery's trademark, a pause generally found at the beginning of the last chapter, in which the author challenges the reader to solve the mystery before reading further, as all clues have now been revealed.

The Siamese Twin Mystery makes a good introduction to Ellery Queen. It has all of the elements that characterize a classic Ellery Queen mystery. It is among the best of Ellery Queen stories, comparing favorably with The Greek Coffin Mystery, The Spanish Cape Mystery, and The Tragedy of X.

Excellent Guide
I actually found this book in Greece as I was leading of tour along the path of Paul's missionary journeys. As I examined the book I was sorry that I hadn't had access to it before I left on the trip...it provided excellent biblical and cultural insight into each of the places that we visited (Thessaloniki, Philippi, Corinth, Athens, Ephesus). It is the kind of thorough guide that every busy pastor hopes to find that will make his/her work a little bit easier. It is not a lengthy book but the information is sufficient for the background one needs to learn about the places Paul (and we) traveled.

Parents Take Notice!
If you only read one parenting book in your lifetime, then T.I.P.S. should be your choice. The earlier in your child's life you can get your hands on a copy, the better. Weininger clearly and succintly sets out his plan for helping children and parents deal with the most volatile emotional times in the everyday life of a family. It's a short little volume that might just change the way you think about crying and tantrums forever.

While his approach may be less than culturally popular at the moment, his research-based findings about the effects of parents' actions on babies to teenagers are simply revolutionary. With an ultimate respect for the dignity and psyche of the child, Weininger has an invaluable lesson to teach parents about how their daily interactions and disciplinary efforts need to always take into account the long-term ramifications on child development.

A must-read!

Tensile Structures edited by Friel Otto
I have the book. This monumental work is into two major volumns. The first one was copywrited in 1962, the other volumn was added to the orginal in 1965. The book is edited by Friel Otto and contains not only his work, but the work other leaders in the forfront of this new form of architecture. Volumn 1 Friel Otto; Pneumatic Structures Rudoff Trostel; Calculation of Membranes Friel Otto; Tension Anchoring of the Foundation

Volumn 2 Friel Otto: Basic Concept and Survey of Tensile Structures Friedrich-Karl Schleyer; Analysis of Cables, Cable Net and Cable Structures The first section of book contains an indepth look of modeling using soap bubbles. Early experiments with balloons are presented showing how the early enginnering concepts were developed and tested. Many early examples of the use of the domes form for human habitation are also included. Large scale projects are also presented with shapes of the sturctures going into square, hexigons, and other auxilliary forms are presented. The next major part of this section containg cable netting and the models presented are truly facinating for there possible large scale appications. In the next part you will find a presentation on of all things, hoses. This topic is expanded into presenation of how hoses can be turned in load bearing members of a structure. Semicylinders and there real time applications are presented. The volumn continues with indebth presentations on Internal Drainage, Cushion Structures as well some very interesting experiments. I read and reread this section many times to try to understand all of the information presented especially in experiment home construction. The next section I really enjoyed. The volumn is nothing but how loading caculated is you like applied physics and engineering that section for you. I got understood much of it but in my case, it has been too many year since calculusII.

The second voulmn contain a hitory, development and classification of Tensile Structures. In this part Friel Otto takes you though the history of this form of architecture and mixes into modeling with concrete application showing large scale projects. I find this part of the volumn really helpful in undering how Mr. Otto thinks though his application problems from his basic modeling. His foundations details really helped me in the work I was doing at the time. The mix of the theoretical with the real time applications is very unique. I always had to remember this work was started in the late 50's and all of the work I was reading about was published in the mid-sixties. The last part of this volum was the enginnering calculations for Tensile Structures. I am still trying understand much of the information presented. My recomendations, is you like this architectural form and the math which drives it; this book is one you must read. When you read this book and look at the beautiful works of Horst Berger in Light Structures, this book by, Freil Otto and others is the historical basis on which Mr. Berger and other architects have continued the architecture form of Tensile Structures.

You can get it used, I did it just takes time. Some college library have it, but you will never get throught it one sitting.TjS

The Kirkus Review is wrong.
I haven't read this novel, but the statement that this is Otto F. Walter's first English language book is incorrect. In 1962 Grove Press published an amazing novel of his called THE MUTE.

It is a classic son-in-search-of-his-father book. One of the best I've read. Experimental, yet completely understandable. I recommend it.

2KY of Coptic folklore, wisdom, and faith
The Book: A celestial encyclopedia
This wonderful encyclopedia of Coptic varieties was Dr. meinardus present to the Church he loved, on the eve of the third millennium, celebrating the survival of Orthodoxy of Alexandria, and piety of the Copts for two millennia, of which fifteen centuries it suffered peresecution from the Romans, Byzantines, and Moslems.
Integrating information from some of his numerous books on the Copts, their monks, monastries and life, together with numerous of his recent studies.I cannot limit this book to Dr. Watson's definition "A one volume encyclopedia", since it is celestial fun to read, with lots of Baal Shem style stories, some of which are written in the memory of Christian religious thought.

Stories of the Desert Fathers of Shehit,
Shihet (Scetis) lies south of Nitria and SE Cellia where these monasteries and those who dwelt in them; St. Macarius, and the company of the desert fathers. Their legendary wisdom and mere Christianity are amazing. Rev.Dr.Meinardus tells his version of the charming Coptic folklore, wisdom, and myth. His selection of the cover Icon of the Three Saint Macari, and back cover of St. Anthony Monastery reveals to the expert eyes how Coptic to the bones he became, after 40 years of living, studying, and writing about the Copts. I rated this fine work at a mere 4.5 only, since the photos are not colored, though it may be the intention of the publisher to reflect how colorless became "Today's Coptic Christianity"

Glorious synopsis of a life's study:
"This fine new compendium of Coptic history and life, from the greatly admired scholar Professor Otto Meinardus, will immediately take its place as the one essential Coptic Orthodox desktop reference book in English, whether for a scholar or for the general reader. . ., and without this volume most of the material would otherwise not be available to the English Language Coptologist.
