Big Red Apple doesn't fall far from the tree
Delightful glimpse into Rose's life away from home and adds another layer of complexity to the bossy sister-struggling teacher-go to it gal in the form of Eliza Jane. I don't doubt for a minute most of this volume is true to word, especially the emergence of Rose's feminist/socialist values.

Fun for kids, equally interesting to this adult.

Charming Story
This book is excelent. Its a great addition to the Rose years. I think this story is quite interesting and it shows how difficult growing up is , no matter what time in history! Its a book girls can relate to and its also very pleasant to read.

An excelent book
On the Banks of the Bayou is a wonderful story of Laura Ingalls Wilder's daughter, Rose, who leaves her home in the Ozarks to finish high school in Louisiana. She stays with her Aunnt Eliza Jane. The city is full of excitment, and Rose discovers she is an independent women with stong hoppes and dreams.

Find One
This book is not easy to come by but I recently found a copy and recieved it today. I haven't seen this book since I was a child and it was a wonderful, nostalgic experience to read it again as an adult. If you can find one (and there are several used copies for sale on Amazon.com) get one. It was worth every penny. I can't wait to read it it my children like my mom read it to me.

Best Children's book for Parents and their Kidlets
This book is so much fun for children and adults, it is a book that you don't mind reading over and over. I still have memories of my mom reading this book to me as a child and laughing, and having the best time. If you get this book take good care of it, because you will want to share it with your children's children's children...

Still with me after so many years
I used to read this book over and over as a kid. I still have it and hope my children will love it as I much as I still do. A sweet story, with beautiful illustrations. If you find yourself a copy, never let it go.

Easy to read, it is filled with useful information and is written in a highly entertaining style. Try it' You will like it.

Fun family read
What a great experience to share in! This family takes you through their highs and lows through the pages of this entertaining book. I was tickled as they trompted through jungles and across deserts -- with each of them having a perspective.
Super book!

Travels with my family - what an undertaking!
Exploring the world with your spouse and three kids sounds like an impossible dream. Roger makes it sound doable for the average Joe with imagination and stamina (and a well-organized spouse!). A mixture of information, insights, humor and introspection.

I loved it! And I'm not saying that just because I'm his aunt and godmother....

Extract from ¿Books on Bosnia¿, London 1999
A big, passionate book by the New York Times correspondent, who has tried to pack everything into it: the Bosnian experience of the war (told through several family histories), the Western response and UN policy, and the historical background. Cohen argues well against the 'ethnic hatreds' doctrine, but tends to substitute World War II hatreds instead. However, his analysis of UN failure, including evidence drawn from minutes of a high-level meeting held before the fall of Srebrenica, will be of lasting importance

If you live an enire life and only read one book
this is the book to read. Its absolutely fantastic. Roger Cohen has a very sharp pen. For me its not just enough to read the book myself, I want to buy other copies and give to friends.

THE definative account of the Bosnian war
The destruction of Yugoslavia is not the easiest of subjects to fully comprehend. Cohen's informative and excellently written narrative is the best place to start. Cohen does more than just describe the events, he attempts to get beneath the surface to understand the psychology behind the unspeakable atrocities committed during the various wars. The trajedy of Yugoslavia cannot be understood without a recounting of the atrocities committed there during World War II, atrocities that largely went unpunished. All of this and more are recounted by Cohen in his very readable account. It is must reading for anyone interested in recent European history.

Classic on Japan's Famous WWII Navy Destroyer Captain
This book provides a welcomed view from the other side from Captain Tameichi Hara, Imperial Japanese Navy, who perfected Japanese Naval torpedo doctrine just prior to WWII - enabling the Imperial Japanese Navy to exploit and use to devastating advantage, the Type 93 oxygen fueled torpedo, aka "Long Lance"

Captain Hara injects humor and adds a personal side to his story while providing his views of key naval battles that he fought in against the United States Navy during World War II

This is a must read for any serious naval historian interested in the Imperial Japanese Navy, particularly as it relates to the naval engagements Hara fought in and the destroyers he commanded.

Stirring Stuff!
This book should always be in print. If I taught history in school or college, I'd make sure it was required reading. I first read the book as a mere lad of 14, always kept my copy around. It did much - in the postwar years, to wash away any bitterness toward former 'enemies.' In all honesty, I have never been able to forget certain things said by Hara - in his book, about human conduct. The other reviews say it all. Hara was a remarkable person. He took his duties seriously, but always remained a conscientious individual - candidly critical of the Japanese high command, when necessary - always ready to pay tribute to the skill of his opponents - peers in the U.S. Navy.I was struck by Hara's integrity - his strength of character, his leadership qualities - his daring, often fighting unequal battles. He realised the importance of learning from experience - of not making the same mistake - twice. I missed the references to the 'Rape of Nanjing' - must check it out. Still, as other reviewers noted, Hara was inclined toward a certain universalism in his thinking, moving toward a kind of pacifism toward the end of his career. He never approved of the senseless brutality frequently doled out to young cadets etc., and maintained a code of honour - worthy of the best Samurai tradition.I liked the goodwill expressed between Hara and his American peers, upon the surrender of Japan. As regards naval history per se, Hara's accounts of battles like Santa Cruz, Guadalcanal/Vella Lavella etc., question Sam Morrison's conclusions or observations in the official study (H.U.S.N.O. WW2).Alas, Hara could be accorded a bit more respect in his native land. An NHK t.v. documentary covering the loss of the Yamato, didn't make a single reference to Captain Hara, or the Yahagi, then escorting the Yamato, lost alongside.Like one of the other reviewers, I've read Hara's book so many times, it has fallen to bits. In the present climate, there is something sobering about Hara's book. That honour matters - in war, that military action always requires clear and attainable objectives, and ought never to become a mindless slaughter of the enemy, or a mindless sacrifice of one's own personneland resources.

One of the best books I own
Little can be added to the reviews below, expect to add that this book really shows how Hara was a leader of men. In spite of IJN policy and militaristic propaganda he trains his crew to a superlative level. He is also brutally honest about himself and his mistakes and foibles. Add to this some invaluable historical eyewitness data and you have a great book. Hara, by rewriting IJN torpedo doctrine in the 30's, can honestly be said to have contributed more to the IJN's battle success than any other person. This book is rich in history and flavor and well worth tracking down. My paperback copy is in three parts with the spine gone, but I still consider it one of the stars of my collection.

Amazing prose from a Laura and Rose point of view
Special thanks to Roger Lea McBride and family for the "trip" to DeSmet and giving us Laura's voice once more, even though it was heartbreaking for all involved. Equally impressive was Rose's saga while living in town. The girl was quite a firecracker. Again, just as charming as Little House, but the storytelling is a bit more complex and more reflective of who Rose was. This series truly equals the charm and storytelling of Laura's story. Kudos to those who thought to bring this series to print.

A Time for New Beginnings...
Rose and her family are still living in the little town of Mansfield. There, they are doing the best they can to get back on their feet and return to Rocky Ridge Farm. It's a big year for Rose and filled with many changes. For example, she witnesses the dawn of a new era as she celebrates the turn of the new century. Besides all the hard work, there's still love in the air for Rose! "New Dawn on Rocky Ridge continues the story that Laura Ingalls Wilder told of her own childhood, a story that has charmed generations of readers, including me."

The Best!
I own and have read every single Rose Years books and out of all of them this was my favorite! It's about a young girl who is full of dreams and ambitions. I think it's the best book and that everybody dhould be able to read it!

New Talkpower: The Mind-Body Way to Speak Like a Pro

Simple but Effective Guide to Public Speaking
I found Natalie Rogers' text, THE NEW TALK POWER, very useful for a Public Speaking college course. Rogers gives a step-by-step guide made up of "templates" for standard 5-7 minute speeches. She integrates the preparation phases with acting exercises (proper breathing, visualization, etc.)and provides the reader with many examples of speeches. The book is a valuable tool for speech classes. My only quibble is that she might have provided a little more background in interpersonal communication including providing examples and definitions of terms associated with effective verbal and non-verbal communication (i.e., emblems, rhetorical questions, decoding, etc.)

The Best of the Best.
Why did I buy this book? I was hooked at once when I began to read the introduction, where the author, Natalie Rogers, a former actress, acting teacher and behavioral psychotherapist, reports the feelings she had when she attended a class about "Oral Communication" and witnessed the students' ordeal during presentations:

"Was I the only one aware of the discomfort and loss of concentration? Apparently, the instructor was not concerned. Apart from her command to relax, she ignored the students' profound distress and continued urging them to make eye contact and speak more slowly. `Don't be so nervous,' she'd add, presumably trying to be helpful. `We support you.'

I was bewildered . This wasn't at all like the systematic training I had received in acting school, where we were given intensive coaching for concentration, relaxation, attention, and awareness. Here, except for the suggestion to relax, the sole focus was on the preparation of the speech, with no serious attention paid to the painful loss of confidence that many students were experiencing."

Natalie's book gives you the training. It teaches detailed, concrete, step-by-step methods to address the fear of public speaking. I have consulted various books about the fear of public speaking during the past couple of years, but this book provides the most powerful and straightforward step-by-step training approach of them all. Just to give only a few concrete examples of how this book is full of extremely valuable information page for page: It provides a detailed step-by-step instruction of correct belly breathing - all the other books which mentioned breathing techniques left me with the impression I had to take "deep" breathes in order to have the desired effects. Another example: The author writes "The idea of managing or confronting your fear is meaningless ... People with anxiety about speaking in public cannot overcome their problem with cavalier advice. The only reasonable solution is a method that will eliminate the fear and its devastating effects.", and later in the book explains why videotape is not the appropriate tool for beginning and fearful speakers - now I understand why training seminars with video, offered by my company, only left me embarrassed and frustrated, and with an even greater feeling of helplessness! And a last example: I always had wondered why visualization exercises had not the desired effects for me, and attributed it to my lack of commitment - now I know better!

This book is much more than only a book on public speaking. It teaches a comprehensive, systematic mind-body training approach on how to prepare yourself for performance situations. In the author's words: "Performance is any situation where you feel that you are being judged or evaluated by others. This ability to detach your thoughts from focusing on the audience and their approval, is a skill that you can develop if you commit yourself to the TalkPower program as described in this book." Buy this book - it provides you with the practical methods you need to help yourself.

The Best Public Speaking Book I've Seen
I teach a public speaking class and I'm a longtime member of Toastmasters International. This is the best public speaking book I have ever seen. I am planning to make it the required reading for my public speaking class. The author, Natalie Rogers in an actress and psychologist and has helped people overcome her speaking fears for many years.
One thing Toastmasters does not teach is the psychology behind public speaking and the fear of it. I found some articles to cover this. This book does an even better job. There are templates for speeches in the book. You can read it through once, then refer to it when you need it. It is also easy enouch to follow to keep ones interest. Dr. Rogers is a very gentle teacher and I recommend this without question.

Only a beginning book
If you want to understand more about Qi and spiritual aspects, I strongly recommend Falun Gong. That is the high level choice, and the healing effect is obvious, although in the Falun Gong Books the author emphasized why people should not intentionally seeking to healing.

It is estimated that 100 million Chinese people go to practice Falun Gong after trying many different Qi Gongs in the past 20 years (before the persecution in China happened).

Very Highly Recommended Reading!
As a teacher of the Chinese martial, health and healing arts, I read this book with great interst. The intention of the author of this book is to support readers in accessing a life-transforming experience by learning about taiji and qigong. It provides foundation material, detailed sets of tools and methods of qi cultivation, and information on the latest science of qi and explorations of the deeper meaning of tai ji. The information has been carefully selected from the diverse body of Chinese knowledge and tradition and distilled into a user-friendly bridge to taiji and qigong for a wide audience. The author explores the promise of qi, then elucidates the ten phases of cultivating and mastering qi: discovery, gathering, circulating, purifying, directing, conserving, storing, transforming, dissolving in, and transmitting. Throughout the book there are sketches that detail the performance of specific taiji and qigong routines such as tracing the yin-yang channels, directing qi in the microcosmic orbit, immortal dragon cultivating the golden elixir, lao gong circle, inner rivers flowing, and many more.

A many splendid book
At first, I related to this book lightly and let others that had a more flamboyant approach to the subject of Tai Chi and Qigong capture my interest. But then there came a moment when The Healing Promise of Qi took over to become a permanent feature of my reading life now for many months. With little mystery and great charm Roger Jahnke explains the Qigong way of solving some of the greatest mysteries of them all - how to joyfully unburden ourselves of emotional baggage and trauma and physical, mental and emotional disharmony in order to allow the wonders of life to express healing energy within us. All this he does admirably with little ego and much compassion. The insights in this book are many as so are its blessings. My heartfelt thanks to the writer for his truly wonderful gift.

The not so Jolly Roger
I liked The not so Jolly Roger becuase it was a mystery and I love myseries. My favorite part was when Fred was reading a book and Fred got sucked into one of the pages. The not so Jolly roger could be better by taking out the part when a pirate shoots his mates after they got done buring the treasure they found. Iread the story becuase in the first book of the series, it was really interesting,so it made me think The not so Jolly Roger was going to be interesting.

"Buy it"!
I really like the Time Warp Trio series. My Grandma Kathy gave me books #1 through #10 for my birthday. So far, they have been very interesting and FUN to read! I am hoping that my younger brother and sister will enjoy them as much as I do.

The Not So Jolly Roger
We think the book, the Time Warp Trio The Not So Jolly Roger is funny and packed with adventure. In this story the three boys Joe,Fred, and Sam go in the magic book in the time of Black Beard the pirate. In the beginning they see a ship with three big cannons aimed right at them. The boys hurry up and climb coconut trees to escape. From the top they spy Black Beard on the ship.Trying to get down, they get stuck in the trees. After they get down from the trees, the three boys see Black Beard and his treasure. Two of the pirates were going to take it, but Black Beard saw them and shot them. Black Beard then thought the trio were going to try and steal his treasure.
Will the boys ever find the book and get home? If you want to find out, read this book.
