What you get instead are short, fun rhymes that provide a stealth mnemonic device to help children learn the alphabet. It's a rather painless lesson for kids, and very entertaining. The rhymes hint Seussian but stay within the English language (no floogle floops here). Each character (one per letter for a total of 26) is unique and has a little something to say.
This arrangement gives parents the opportunity to act out each character in a different way. There's nothing kids like better than to see their parents act goofy, and this book offers that chance. After several readings the kids start to play along.
Given the rhyming text, the artwork could have gone the Dr. Seuss route, but didn't. Instead, the artist embodied the figures with modern animated sensibilities, providing images that could easily be part of a Cartoon Network original series like Johnny Bravo or Ed, Edd 'n Eddy. Not that the artwork is particularly reminiscent of either style, but it carries the same sharp attitude and sense of fun that the animated shows have. It's very modern and appeals to kids who, through exposure, understand that style.
The bottom is this book is just plain good silly fun. It's something kids will enjoy and parents will enjoy reading.
What a children's book should be - entertaining, fun to read aloud, great rhythm, clever, and awesome illustrations. I look forward to the next collaboration of Roger Eschbacher and Adrian Johnson.
The author and illustrator recall the literary style of Dr. Seuss and the visual style of Bugs Bunny creator Chuck Jones. The combination is a winning one and I found my children laughing as much at Mr. Johnson's illustrations as they did listening to Mr. Eschbacher's silly verse. With any children's book, the reactions of the children who read or hear it is the ultimate proof of whether a title has hit its mark. In the case of Nonsense! He Yelled, the reaction of my kids indicate it's an out-of-the-park home run. You'll have as much fun reading it to your kids as they will listening to it.

I am half Vietnamese, and my mother taught Cambodian refugee children how to speak English when they arrived in America. She taught them to speak fluently even though English is her second language and she could not speak their language. I was also really young then, and these children were my friends. I had no idea of the horrors they had lived through until I grew older and read this story.
This book is remarkable because of the detail related by Dr. Ngor and the personal nature of its content. Many Cambodians to this day will not talk about his period in their lives. For many, the mental and physical abuse they suffered during this period was too painful to re-live ever again. As I read this book, I could not help but wonder how Dr. Ngor was able to keep himself together.
Dr. Ngor effectively puts the period of Khmer Rouge rule in historical context by explaining the historical events and forces which led to their capture of the country. These events and forces included the People's Republic of China, North Vietnam, the Vietnam War, the United States, and of course, the C.I.A.
I admire Dr. Ngor for his extraordinary courage, and I regret that I did not have the opportunity to meet him during his lifetime. May he rest in peace.

The individual chapters address craving, difficult emotions, ethics, calming the mind, vision, wisdom, and serving others. Each section contains a number of exercises that you can try, modify, or adopt completely as best suits your own life and outlook. As time goes on, the practices can serve as springboards to discovering new sources of inner guidance.
The discussion of various intersections of the religions is valuable for several reasons. The background provides specific reasons for engaging in spiritual practice. Rote repetition of formulas does not have the value of mindful attention to our actions, and these explanations help to put the practices in perspective. In addition, the discussion often reflects the gut-level experience of the seeker, and will likely resonate strongly with those on a spiritual journey. Also, the practices do not conflict with observance of any of these religions, and would instead enrich one's spiritual experience, irrespective of its formal context. Finally, the discussion of common ground is a beautiful example of how we can rejoice in our similarities, respect our differences, and share common goals for peace, rather than allow religion to divide us and breed hatred.
As the introduction by His Holiness the Dalai Lama states, a few minutes a day devoted to engaging in the practices and contemplating their significance will go a long way towards bringing compassion, and ultimately a sense of inner peace, into your everyday life.
How about an Australian philosopher-psychiatrist with years of experience dealing with spirituality, transpersonal psychology, and mental illness? Roger Walsh makes no claims to have attained a spurious level of "enlightenment" beyond a measure of basic sanity in this world gone slightly mad. In "Essential Spirituality", Walsh provides the perfect companion to Huxley's classic "The Perennial Philosophy"- a book of practical spiritual exercises, advice, and wisdom from sages the world over. Divided into seven sections on what Walsh believes to be the seven essential practices of the world's "Wisdom Traditions", Walsh provides advice on reducing craving, cultivating emotional wisdom, living ethically, meditating, awakening the senses, growing intuition, and pursuing spiritual action. This isn't New Age mysticism- "Essential Spirituality" is grounded in the teachings of saints throughout the world and history, extensively documented by Dr. Walsh. Even the most sceptical mind can see the gentle wisdom in his approach to spirituality.
I give this book my highest recommendation to seekers of all faiths and none- may it help you on your way.

Roger sause has written the most interesting book I've read since Balint Vazsonyi's "America's 30-Year War: Who's Winning". Whereas Vazsonyi comes to his criticisms of the Marxist ideology that permeates so many American institutions today, from the perspective of an immigrant who lived under its Totalitarian boot heel, Sause comes at it with the viewpoint of an Eric Hoffer'ish, street-wise Los Angeles musician. His language and prose are diametrically opposed to that of the poseur academic and many times more communicative. He has done his homework and his take on the big picture is "on the money". In unalloyed terminology he assails the fog of the socialistic ideology that has been foisted on this country's social policy by "progressive charlatan's". Rarely will you read such detailed historical reference written with such an enlightened information age perspicacity. This guy is exceptional as in "really good."
Sause recounts how a high school teacher, an advocate of Marx with an anti-American slant, inculcated his political theories into Sause's personal worldview. This political and social policy assumption model was further reinforced thru Sause's living environment in the Los Angeles arts community, a hot bed of far Left radical thinking. Hollywood is a place where conservative views translate into "no work" so almost everyone in the arts is a reflexive, knee-jerk Leftist. For further confirmation of this read anything written by David Horowitz, a neo-conservative who lives and publishes there.
Sause involves the reader in his personal odyssey as he relates how the street riots in south central L.A., the ostensible result of the Rodney King verdict, caused him to re-examine his pop-Marxist political views of society. To say that only emotional trauma changes behavior would be too trite in his case. The surge of his intellectual curiosity, brought on by the above crisis is Da Vinci-like with a nod too the considerable differences between soft science intellectuals and intellectuals adept at symbolic logic. Needless to say, I found Sause's insights and his ability to tie-in historical reference astounding.
The culmination of this book resides in Sause's negatively critical view of our government's inadequacy as a provider of free education and health care. He profiles its sorry record of outcomes while linking its out of control costs. He predicts that the 3rd wave information revolution will bury the anachronistic 2nd wave industrial model from which America's Marxist inspired social policy is derived. His insights are profound, easily understood and convincing.
This book should be a primer for any course on American history. An academic could quibble with some of the material, but Sause gets it remarkably right. He covers all the Left-leaning shibboleths and all the flawed premise's on which they are based. He brings to light the truth about the religious-Left's influence on the media, race dialogue, health care, education, the environment, feminism, the family, private property, the military, welfare policy and foreign policy. He overlays this in concordance with his views of Alvin Toffler's prognostications as elucidated in his book "The Third Wave". This is all the more remarkable when you consider that Sause is a community college dropout. But, let me tell you, Sause is one very bright guy (remember that Bill gates dropped out of college too!). His credentials are that he is a professional musician who lists a four-year stint as a keyboardist for Kenny G amongst his other considerable credits. It makes one wonder about the value of credentials? Again I ask the question, why is he able to see the world so clearly while so many esteemed academicians cannot?
Buy this book, send copies to your friends, give it to your neighbors; the backlash against socialist totalitarian tyranny is nigh, and Sause is in the forefront. Quite obviously they really ticked him off.

The book is divided into seven sections. The first section is on negotiating gambits and principles. Negotiating gambits include the common reluctant buyer/reluctant seller, handling impasses, nibbling, positioning for easy acceptance and well as many, many others including unethical ones like the red herring. The second section is on how to resolve tough negotiating problems. The third section covers how to use pressure points in negotiation. Then comes negotiating with non-Americans followed by attitudes and beliefs of a power negotiator. Section six covers developing power over the other side and section seven covers the various drives that motivate people in a negotiation.
Simply one of the best books on negotiation, it is a highly recommended read and should be kept near at hand for the occasional review whether to assist you in dealing with the car salesman, the children, or anyone else you deal with.

But they don't stop with theory and statistics. (Granted, there are plenty of charts, facts, and numbers. But I liked those-adds credibility. I want authors to give me proof rather than platitudes.) They outline an action plan for employers to make sure they don't get caught in the crunch. I'm handing the book to my general manager and telling him to implement immediately.
By the way, I liked the readable style. Great pullouts of the key ideas. Easy to skim. You could even hand this book to a department supervisor or manager to cull ideas to correct department recruitment, retention, and productivity problems. Although it addresses big-picture issues of strategic planning, it certainly gets down to the details of the do-now-today stuff .

One of my favorite characters, is Nate who lives on a farm with his older brother, Abe, Abe's wife, Effie, and Effie's twin babies, James and Elza. I like him because he is nice , like when Rose gets sick, he comes to see her a lot.
I would recommend this book to anyone who likes to read about 12 year old girls who have lots of adventures and who love to read. One adventure is when a tree falls on their henhouse, after a big ice storm, and makes a big hole that the chickens escape out of, and then they have to find all of the hens and roosters.
