interesting addition to intergenerational collections
According to Tina, her grandfather is different. Abuelito doesn't speak English, his hands are rough and gnarled from cutting sugar cane, and he doesn't drive. And horrors, he eats with his fingers. Later, Tina's attitude changes as she looks at old photographs of her dead grandmother. She finds that she and her grandfather share a talent for art. They make tortillas- from scratch- and eat them with their fingers. By day's end, they have started on a journey of friendship. Words and pictures are framed in a lovely design of seemingly old photograph-album pages with deckle edges. An interesting addition to intergenerational collections.

sweet book, vibrant illustrations
This charming picture book is about a young girl who hates to visit her grandpa. But one day, when her mother leaves her with him, the girl learns that her grandpa can make delicious tortillas and is quite an artist. This sweet book, filled with vibrant illustration would make a good read-aloud for any child.

getting to know grandpa can be tricky- what a good read!
Everyone can relate to the little girl who doesn't like to visit her grandfather. "My grandfather ruins my day! I don't like to look at him. Water leaks out of his eyes." I followed with interest as the girl's curiosity leads her to get to know the real Abuelito. "Abuelito gave me a necklace and the santos switched places and I can count in Spanish and guess what? Abuelito eats with his fingers and so do I." The story is warm and caring; the pictures are lovely and realistically portray the range of emotions the girl and her grandfather go through. A good book for teachers to keep in their classroom libraries. I plan on giving it as a gift.

Great continuation.
Joanna has now discovered what really happened to Laurie. But it's even more complicated then it seems. She is growing closer to Penn, but she doesn't even know if he's told her all her secrets. And one of the group, Casey, is blackmailing the others. Stephen, Laurie's killer, is about to snap. Joanna can only pray Casey isn't his next victim. There was a lot of suspense in this book, but it's probably been wrongly labeled as a horror story. It's more mystery/suspense.

The Secret that NEEDS to be told!
Janice Harrell keeps up her pace with book 2 "The Betrayal". You become more involved with Joanna and Penn, digging deeper and deeper into the secret that Penn and his group of friends share. Now its time to tell Joanna about it, and now she's apart of it. This book is very suspenseful and keeps you guessing...of course another cliff-hanger ending leaves you to track down #3 "The Escape" (I hope to find the last one in my local library!)

Suspenseful
This book was one of the best I have ever read. I can't wait to see what happens in the last one. It has a weird change of events that keeps you interested.

Best book for anyone living near or any way connected to H20
This book will answer any questions you have and then answer all the questions you are too dense to think of. Anyone living in California should be forced to read this. River runners also benefit from this book that shows the correct fleuvial processes, unlike many kayaking/rafting books. Read it, get on the water and then fight for the rivers!

Great review of how rivers work with a sense of humor
This is a subperb review of how rivers systems work and how man-made changes effect these systems. Perfect for the interested layperson interested in earth science. The second half of this book covers the major watersheds of California.

Best book on how rivers work, not just for California.
I am a hydrologist and a water lawyer practicing in Washington DC -- this is the book I give to clients and friends to explain how rivers work and what people do to them. It assumes an intelligent reader but no background is required to get the main points. While its title and focus is California, the lessons are applicable throughout the country. Great book.

RITA-Award Nominated Novel Definitely Deserves A WIN!!
Great story!! Great characters!! Great romance!! Great drama!! Great parent/child conflict!! It's no wonder this book was recently nominated for best long contemporary for the RITA awards. It's an all-around great book!! You shouldn't miss this one!! It gets my vote for best book!!

Insightful, thoughtful and kind
To tell the truth, I only picked up and read this book because it is MY three cats who are characters in the novel. But as I read I discovered that this woman I volunteer with is an insightful, thoughtful and Kind writer. Her development of these four compelling characters has me invested in their happiness and impressed with their depth and growth. And she got my cats perfect too!

Daughter Merger is a Winner!!
The terrible twos are nothing compared to the traumatic teens. David Whitcomb is a good father and once upon a time, his thirteen-year-old daughter Claire adored him. But times have changed and Claire seems intent on running away to live with her mother---a woman who's unable to look after her.

In desperation, David turns to Grace Blanchet, the mother of Claire's best friend. Grace agrees to fostre Claire while father and daughter work things out. She knows this is what's best for Claire. She's just not sure it's best for her. Does she really want to "play house" with a man who, much as she's attracted to him, reminds her of another man---one she'd prefer to forget?

The Daughter Merger is another winner for Janice Johnson. It's charming and well-written. I stayed up late into the night to finish it. The characters of Grace and David are both realistic and likeable. These are two people you're happy to see end up together. With a lovely blend of humor and romance, The Daughter Merger is a book I'd recommend to anyone who wants a really great read.

It can't happen here...can it?
From the opening lines, this story grips you with it's chilling premise of an American government that has easily slipped beyond allowing doctor-assisted suicides to imposing mandatory euthanasia on the "terminally ill", or mentally defective. Slick packaging has dulled public outrage, and blurred the lines of medical categories, but there are some who fight back when the death sentence becomes personal. How their lives interconnect, and how Christian faith and moral values direct their paths, are well-woven in this fictional account of resistance to what could be a true life situation in our not too-distant future. Janice Thompson has captured the essentials of the euthanasia arguement, and presented it in a fast-paced, suspense filled novel you don't want to miss reading.

An Inspiring and Provoking Book
This is a hauntingly accurate work of fiction. The author presents the premise of the elderly and infirm's "social responsibility" to participate (either voluntarily or by compulsion) in their own demise with compelling characters and smooth transitions in action. The story encourages the reader, not to suspend disbelief, but to become a believer in the power of social convenience over moral princple. As a pro-life supporter, it caused me to move beyond the realm of today's abortion issues into the horrifying possibility of legalized euthanasia. This work motivated me to reconsider my respect and passion for life, and to pursue a greater understanding of the social and political ramifications of "right to die" legislation. I recommend this book for everyone who has an opinion on the pro-life issue.

A must read!
Janice Thompson writes a compelling story every concerned American and Christian should read. Her characters jump off the page and into the readers heart. She balances difficult subject matter with compassion. Will Ashley live or die? Will baby Jamie survive? Will the law of the land be changed? Does passion stand a chance against politics? You must turn the pages to find the answers! And remember...this book is not science fiction - it is fiction based on fact...look to Oregon, USA and to the Netherlands as well as the research Janice provides within the book...it is clear - if good men do nothing, evil will prevail. This book is a call to all good people - do something!

An Enduring Love Story
Enduring? This book has been around since 1956 and is still in print, now that's enduring! I first read Hannah Fowler over twenty years ago and I also "re read" it every couple of years. It is my most favorite work of fiction. An incredibly simple and beautiful work of art, Giles weaves regional lore with a touching love story. Since I first read this book Janice Holt Giles has become my favorite author, she writes with an honesty and wisdom that draws you to her characters. If anyone is remotely interested in Hannah Fowler, please read it, you won't be disappointed. I especially recommend it to teenagers.

This is just a darn good book!
I've read most of Janice Holt Giles' books but this one (my first) has got to be my favorite. It certainly isn't your conventional love story; but then, Hannah isn't your conventional heroine. Nor are she and Tice a conventional couple (she asked HIM to marry HER) but they don't seem to be any less happy for it. Giles' beloved Kentucky hills are the perfect setting for the story, and her writing style is wonderful in its simplicity.

By the way, the best subtle reference to sex I've ever found is in this book. When Tice says, "Let's try out that new shuck tick of your'n" and gives Hannah a gentle shove in that direction... and the rest is left to the imagination.

One of the most memorable books I have ever read
I first read this book over 15 years ago. I have since gone back and read it over about every year or two. The writer has created such real characters and a story line that is just as readable as it was when it was first written. I can not recommend this books strongly enough.

The Milly Stories Meets Me
For my reading club we had to read this book because JaniceLindsay is a local author in my town. I decided to read it because Ireally liked the back section that was taken from the book. I lovedit. I loved Speedbump,Flora,Josie,Milly,Aunt Gloria, and the other characters. I really recommend it. I met the author last month after I read the book and she has one of the most brilliant minds I've ever met. She's truely talented. The book had it's own conclusion that was quite neat. The real story about the book that the author,Janice Lindsay, told me is that this book is not true but it originally started from when she was in a short class that lead it to being going into the book. She wrote Chapter 11 first and then the rest of the book. I recommend this book for any ages. It gives you one girl's true feelings about death, living in a funeral parlor, having a smart cousin and having Aunt Gloria's advise come in handy. If you don't read this book you'll regret ever thinking of reading any other books because this is a wonderful book that deserves a ton of credit. Joyabounding Always!

Makes you laugh, cry, and wish for more.
Unlike so many of today's novels, this one deals with serious issues in a humorous, upbeat way, leaving the reader with some great coping strategies as well as satisfied with having had a great read.

Enjoyable story. Fantastic book.
"The Milly Stories" was wonderful. One of my friends has already asked me to lend it to her. She was over my house and read the back and thought it sounded good. She is the kind of person that has a lot of "joyabounding" ideas. She actually reminds me alot of Flora. She loves nature and is one of the most creative people I know. I hope you write many more successful books like "The Milly Stories."

A Practical Guide to Usability Testing
Published in Paperback by Intellect (01 October, 1999)
Authors: Joseph S. Dumas and Janice C. Redish
Amazon base price: $34.95

A classic
This is a classic in the field, written by two highly-respected usability specialists. I was fortunate to read it as one of the textbooks in a class on usability testing taught by Dr. Dumas. It is a very practical book, covering planning, testing, and reporting the results. The strengths and weaknesses of usability testing are discussed, and there is some information about other usability evaluation methods and basic design principles.

This is a republication, with only slight changes, of the 1993 edition, so the technology and costs are not up to date. But it's not hard to think in terms of digital cameras instead of videotape.

Highly recommended.

necessary reading
This is required reading for usability professionals. It's a detailed look at testing, covering everything from test plans and lab construction to data analysis and how to handle unqualified testers who slip through the screening process. It covers lower-budget tests in addition to full-scale ones. It's clear that Dumas and Redish have loads of experience, and they're not shy about sharing it.

The most useful idea I came away with is that testing needs a specific purpose. You can't just test a system's usability; you test, for example, the navigation system or a membership form.

The only flaws here are a couple of omissions. There's no mention of testing web applications, though the principles covered here can be extrapolated to other purposes. And there is no mention of the ultra-cheap guerilla testing tactics. I doubt Dumas and Redish would approve of them, but it would have been very helpful to read about where these alternative methods were effective and not.

This book is a keeper. While my organization will not likely be doing full-blown usability testing for awhile, I'm now more able to evaluate and communicate with third-party testing facilities. And this book will influence all of our other evaluation and assessment testing methods.

Insightful, Useful, and Usable - The Best Usability Book
This is a step-by-step quide with checklists, offering insight into every stage of usability testing. It should help any software development project produce more usable software (assuming the developers are willing to make changes based on the results of testing).

As someone who has done research about usability, taught about usability to over 1000 practitioners, and developed usable systems (some more so than others) for 20 years, I am still impressed every time I open this book. I recommend it as the best practical book on developing usable software (although I also recommend other books, such as Nielsen's "Usablity Engineering" and Rubin's "Handbook of Usability Testing").

Great Page Turner
I found this book in the attic covered under piles of dust. I did not know what it was about as it did not have a cover or anything telling what the book was about. I decided to give it a try and was immediatly submersed in the world of the 1800's. I could not put the book down after the first page. it took me about 2 days to complete the whole book. The author, Giles, is very descriptive and exciting writer. Usually i do not like to read books set in the 1800's, but this book is excellent. It is about the life of Rebecca Fowler. It starts with her early life chasing the man she loves and evovles as Rebecca does into her life story. It talks of life in the wilderness and then life while she is involved in a Shaker community and life thereafter. This is an excellent book and i cannot wait to read more book written by Giles.

Captures your imagination, explores another time and culture
From beginning to end I was drawn into the lives of all the caratures. Being from Kentucky and visiting Shakertown, I was able to use my imagination and see different sides of how they lived. It brought out both the pros and cons to their living. I also liked how a woman in that time was able to be strong and go with her "beliefs".

The book is great. Janice really reaches out to the reader!
I have read many of Ms. Giles books and this one is by far my favorite! She truly reached out to me and because of her book I am contemplating converting to Shakerism! She makes the characters come alive, feel their feelings, and even though she shares it from a point of view against Shakers, she lets you form your own opinion. I worked at a Shakertown but nothing was as moving to me as this book!

Dancing in the Fields of God Inspirational
Dancing in the Fields of God is a highly inspirational novel for any reader from age fourteen to ninety-five, full of heart-warming awakenings and interesting life events. It is an engaging text that made me rethink my own spirituaity and belief in theories of reincarnation, and I literally couldn't put it down. You are never too old or too young (I am nineteen) to raise the big questions about life, and this work is a useful aid in fine-tuning your own feelings on love, life and spirituality.

A thoughtful love story
I enjoyed Dancing in the Fields of God immensely. Ms. Imbach explores not only the relationship between Kathleen and Douglas but also explores creativity, the importance of the choices we make daily, and psychological wholeness and spiritual transformation. I found the author's description of Kathleen's paintings to be inspiring. Having had some experience in the health care field, I personally identified with the character's struggles and triumphs in working with the people she sought to heal. I recommend this book without hesitation.

beautiful and moving
I cannot begin to adequately convey my appreciation to Ms. Imbach for this book. The story is touching and the characters engaging. The prose is evocative and the dialouge delightful. Ms. Imbach's writing is demonstrative of a brilliant mind and a deeply-examined soul. I found myself living and learning along side Kathleen, recongnizing so much of her in myself. I gladly recommend this book to any reader with a passion for the English language and a yearning for personal growth. Bravo, Ms. Imbach. Bravo!
