An easy to read, good story about a man who brings his family up North to free them from their dependence on sharecropping profits to sustain life in the South.

An amazing story of a boy who overcomes many obstacles to help provide for his family. The story presents James' journey from Tennessee to Chicago where he establishes a factory job and selflessly sends half of his first paycheck to his father's landlord back home. Eventually he returns to the South to bring the entire family up North and finds them a place to permanently live. A story that is well written with a consistant style bestowing an easy read. After reading this elequently written biography, one feels a deep attachment to the Small Town Boy who came North.

This book features beautiful colorful illustrations and a very cute story, full of accurate cultural details. To be enjoyed by children and adults alike, it also is a great way to "teach" your kids about death, or to help them deal with mourning, whether or not you are hispanic.

El Espiritu de Tio Fernando is an excellent book describing the mexican celebration of Days of the Dead. The book follows a young boy and his mother as they remember his uncle who has died within the last year. The book is simple yet includes many aspects of the celebration. The illustrations are wonderfully detailed so as to show the emotions of each part of the celebration. The text is in both English and Spanish allowing all children to enjoy it equally.

For anyone involved in the teaching of reading, this book gives you the information needed to help students become confident readers. I followed these guidelines in my classroom and I am ecstatic at the results. My students attitudes towards reading have improved as well as their comprehension, writing, and spelling, just like Pilgreen stated it would. I recommend this book and method to all.

This is an excellent, well researched examination of sex education and the ways in which discourses of sex and sexuality have been simultaniously decried and utilized by the right. Irvine displays an extensive knowledge of sex education debates and provides an important historical accounting for the current state of affairs. The history presented in her book is fundamental for understanding sexuality, education, speech, and particularly, the interweaving of the three and its implication for battles over sex ed. Bravo. This is an important and timely book which deserves a wide audience.

This execellent and accesssible book explains how and why sex ed has been such a hot button issue. More importantly, it explains how the Christian Right has used sex ed to mobilize politically, how scare tactics are constructed, and why they are effective.

It takes great courage to stand up for comprehensive sexuality education. This book will help to more deeply root proponents in thier own history and offers a clear description of the historic modus operandi of the opposition.

It may be helpful to read this book in tandem with standard books about the religious right; notably Eternal Hostility: The Struggle Between Theocracy and Democracy, by Frederick Clarkson; and With God on Our Side, by William Martin.

This book has awesome photographs and is a wonderful reference book for anyone interested in growing tall bearded irises. I love it!!

This is one of the best books on iris's I have seen. It is full of beautiful pictures, page after page. This is a must have for Iris lovers!. I want every flower I see!. I can't say how much I have enjoyed looking at the pictures and wishing spring was here to see the iris's in bloom. I know my garden will be increasing by leaps and bounds with a lot of new added editions. I have visited the author's garden, as she is local, and believe me the pictures are beautiful, but her gardens are totally breath taking.

I have read all of the books written by Janice Holt Giles, both the Piny woods series of which this is one and the moving west series many times. I loose myself after the first page or so and am completely immersed until I sadly turn the last page. Her research is fantastic. If she says it rained that day, you can bet it did. I was saddened to hear of Mrs Giles death and wish I could find an author I would enjoy as much.

I began reading this book, against my will, simply to become more familiar with the authors of rural areas. Yet, after skimming the mere first chapter, I became entrapped into the unbelievable writing style of Mrs. Janice Holt Giles. I would recommend this book to anyone - especially to those who do not truly understand what life is like in a rural area. The characters are rich and easily related to, and I was utterly captivated by this realistic and creative tale!!
