An incredible book for both children and adults
Marguerite Henry was, in my opinion, one of the greatest children's authors. Once again, with San Domingo, she creates a winner.
San Domingo is an exceptional horse, blessed with the medicine hat, considered sacred by Native Americans. He proves himself in the end of the book. There is a sad ending, but I think that even small children would be fine reading this book.

WONDERFDUL BOOK!
I thought this book was really good!!! I liked it a lot. I think that Marguerite Henry is a great author. I love her books! I thought this book was REALLY good. I would definetly reccomend this book to people!

This is one of the best books I've ever read!
This is a wonderful story. Marguerite writes superb books. This books is about a boy becoming a man and a father becoming a true father to his son. If there was a 10-star rating, I would give it to this book! Excellent story. I definatly recommend it to the horse-lover.

A Rudimentary Outline of the Ancient Wisdom for Humanity
"Saving the World", presents the Ancient Wisdom as conveyed by the Master Djwhal Khul as He presented it to Alice Bailey for publication under her name (she also wrote several books herself under his tutelage). "Saving the World' by Henry Guy in collaboration with other members of his school, is a practical, hands-on plan/introduction (albeit basic) for humanity who have never heard/read about the Ancient Wisdom/Bailey books.
Unfortunately, few books have been written that remotely compare with the Bailey books/Ancient Wisdom given by the Master Djwhal Khul (Who also gave Blavatsky a half century earlier the contents of "The Secret Doctrine"). This is because He is part of the spiritual/5th kingdom and no longer human (4th kingdom)as evidenced by His writings which no human could have possibly have written (and few comprehend).
This book is still a must read for all intelligent & aspiring humanity (and novices of the Ancient Wisdom). Another introductory book (written by Alice Bailey herself) on the Ancient Wisdom (especially about meditation, which is sadly absent in "Saving the World", and a fundamental requirement for soul contact/infusion/growth) is "From Intellect to Intuition).

New insights, a beautiful book..
For me, this book had new insights into the age-old question of our role here on earth, including the challenges we face in trying to live a spiritual life in a physical world that seems to make that very difficult.. I really like this book a lot and plan to give copies to those of like-mind..

A Layman's Book for True Spiritual Growth
Henry Guy has taken the subject of spirituality and brought it to a level that any intelligent person can understand. He is insightful, using great illustrations to show how the individual can be reponsible for the saving of humanity, and the world in which we live.

So many of us live lives which do not seem to have much purpose, but Guy's book enables us to see that joyous living is a part of saving the world, along with harmlessness, right speech, and right human relations.

If you want to have a life of purpose and joy, this book will be a great aid to getting there.

A True Leader
Shackleton was an amazing man full of true grit and true leadership. Among the many things that stand out in his story of survival is the importance of keeping a journal. Even after many supplies and equipment were left on the ice, the men were instructed to continue to carry their journals. And what if they had not? Where would be the true story that outshines most fictional adventure stories in the minds and imaginations of many, including myself?

If you want to read more about Antarctica, I suggest T.H. Baughman's "Before the Heroes Came."

Sheer will and nerve.
Ernest Shackleton's description of his voyage into and subsequent escape from Antartica is amazing. The matter of fact tone with which he describes his adventure seems wildly juxtaposed on the events which he led his men safely through. It's an interesting read which gives some glimpse into the calm and mechanically rational mind of Shackleton, the reason he and his men survived. I highly recommend this book.

Edge of Your Seat
Fascinating and exciting book. Shackelton writes in the most British of style -- he describes an ice floe splitting beneath his tent in the same plain delivery as the description of a depth sounding. The book is overflowing with the most amazing of events, placing Shackelton's crew in an adventure every bit as great as Lewis and Clark's expedition (read the Ambrose book "Undaunted Courage" if you like this one).

This is a fine edition, as it includes approx. eighty photographs of the expedition. From the outset of the voyage to the harrowing crossing of St. George Island, this guy would put today's extreme adventure-seekers to shame.

Great For The Historian!
The Spirit of Seventy-six by Henry S. Commager is possibly the best collection of writings from the American Revolution. The book has thousands of exerts from journals, diaries, and letters
by participants. The book also has great maps to refer to while studying a certain battle or campaign. This book has a "contents"
that is handy in finding your interest, the book is over one thousand pages. The Spirit of Seventy-six is a great reference book for the Revolutionary War enthusiast.

Wonderful
A great book ! I spent the better part of this year reading this book. But the beauty is that does not pose a problem because the writings included in this work are all relatively short. Make no mistake this is a very long work but well worth the effort. Especially since it is a collection of an incredible number of very short works.

The collected works are as the title states contemporary accounts. It is a real treat to read what the contenders had to say about each other. Also the reader may think that the style will be difficult. Not at all.

All in all I would most heartily recommend this work for either the student who would like a resource or anyone interested in The Revolution.

Superb
This is a great book! You can read it cover to cover, or read parts here and there, putting it down and taking it up as one has time or the inclination. The editors place all of the writings in perspective and context. The selections are not just those of the big name founding fathers--many common folk, officers and soldiers, civilians and women have their say in these pages. British, Americans and Loyalists are represented as well.

Review of Straight and Crooked Thinking
This book should be required reading for anyone that takes public policy issues seriously. It explains the various techniques and ploys by which emotionally loaded words and various debating tricks can transform an intellectually honest debate into a propaganda campaign, and gives techniques to counter these ploys. I cannot recommend it highly enough.

Helps one to keep focussed on the main issues in a debate.
This is one of the most useful books that I have ever read. The author points out how debates are often lead away from the main issues by using arguments that appeal to emotion rather than to facts. He clearly describes how it is done and how to avoid being lead away from the issues by such devices. Important reading for anyone who has been in a debate and wonders why the opponent didn't sound convincing and yet you were unable to answer him/her!

An unforgetable book, I've used it's priciples since school.
This book was the single most valuable book which I ever read, since it explains how people distort agruments through emotions. The book clearly explains what is happening and then teaches you how to handle the situation.

a spirit lifter
This book is absolutely wonderful. It is such a wonderful encourager for married couples. I 've been reading this book since September 2001 and have not finished it yet (now April 2002). This is by choice because I try to savor every bit. In addition to the bible, this book was the only book I was able to read as I was going through the loss of my unborn child. It lifted my spirits, comforted me and encouraged me oh so much as a wife and a mother. This will be the first book that my marriage group will read.

I recommend this book for both spouses to read and reflect.

Praying for a Part II.

Together For Good: Lessons From Fifty-Five Years Of Marriage
In a day when so many social institutions have lost their luster, "Together For Good" provides a sterling testament of the enduring virtue and value of a "vibrant" lifelong commitment. The Mitchell's unique recollection of their more than half century journey together holds forth a hopeful note amidst our hi-tech concerns of alienated households, fragmented families and ruptured relationships (in every regard). It is a highly recommended reading for those who would contemplate the gift of mutual companionship at it's very best!

Thank you Dr's. Ella & Henry Mitchell for this timeless treasure!

Something Practical In Couple Enrichment ... Real SPICE !
The Mitchells speak straight from their hearts to ours and provide practical help and open honest means for healing the hurts of those of us who are in new or long term relationships. The book is a tender dialogue between them spanning a half century of changes, crises and challenges; reminding us that all of life is indeed dialogue and that something mystical and magical happens in relationships when we truly see, hear and tenaciously embrace the other. Their story is a special gift.

Stolen Life: The Jorney of a Cree Woman
I have actually just begun to read the book as I became interested in this particular book very recently -- my family grew up in the same neighborhood as Yvonne Johnson and I felt compelled to read the book. I recall certain incidents from childhood such as her father on the front porch lining up all the children &(drunk) screaming "Indians on the Warpath" and one time grabbing my own sister off her bike, throwing her down (mistaking her for Yvonne) and then having to apologize profusely (he was drunk that time also)to my family. I recall her oldest brother dying while in the county jail, how my mother had him at times mow our lawns & we recalled how sad that time was, how the youngest, Perry, looked like a female with the long flowing hair (he had the lightest coloring), the girls Karen, Sharon, Kathy, Yvonne, how the Mother drove truck--the hard-scrabble life they led--I am sure it took a tremendous amount of courage to write this book, I recalled how she struggled with her speech, etc and how people could be mean to her.

Scary, heartbreaking, shocking
I just finished the book about Yvonne and her hardships. I read it in Norwegian, but that did not diminish the affect it had on me. It's unbelievable what some people have to go through, without anyone doing something about it. And then actually surviving it all, amazing!
She said it herself in the book that people who have been through hard experiences easier can understand what others have to struggle with. And being as she is a Medicine Woman it is in her blood to try and help, wherever possible.
It is also a startling report on how the Natives are still treated in both America and Canada. One can only hope that books like this can help open at least a few peoples eyes...

Don't let your fears stand in the way of your dreams!
Tansi,

I come from a small reserve in northern Manitoba. What I read in "Journey of a Cree Woman" was unbelievable. I cannot believe how many hardships this woman had to go through, and yet she still continues on. This book really opened my eyes as to what other women go through . This book touched my heart and many times I got shivers down my back. This book is an awesome book, that I recommend especially for women. There are many good things I could say about this book, but there is a limit. I commend Rudy on his awesome work and continuied support with Yvonne. I commend Yvonne for sharing her story with us as it is not easy to tell a story that is nothing but the truth!

The Greatest Animal Story Ever Written.
My mom bought me this book when I was ten I immediately thought it was going to be a good book as it had a charming front cover showing an innocent looking otter. Tarka is a sweet young otter and the book is like his life story in a way his life is like a human's . He is born ,he grows up,he loves he loses and he dies. The discription of him and his surroundings create a vivid picture in the readers mind. It really is a charming story and I would recommend this to anyone who loves animals and/or reading.

A wonderfully written story.
I really loved this book. It really did a wonderful job of showing how joyful Tarka's life was, and how, even when he was hunted, his life was still joyful. I highly recommend this book!

Tarka the Otter is descriptive, realistic, & in places, sad.
Tarka the Otter is written very descriptively, from an otter's point of view. It's similar to Watership Down, but Tarka's thought is much less anthropomorphized than that of the characters in Watership Down. You'll find this book quite sad in places, perhaps even upsettingly so, because of the realistic (and unfair) interactions Tarka and others have with English hunters and their dogs a few times (such is life). If you cried at the end of Where the Red Fern Grows, beware. If you are unfamiliar with the endearing antics of members of the weasel family, you are in for an educational and fun treat. Perhaps you'll run out and get a ferret after this.

Words of wisdom from an old pro.
I had no idea H. L. Mencken wrote a book until I stumbled upon this treatise (shows you how much I know). Needless to say, I snatched it up in a heartbeat. The book is, unsurprisingly, a literary delight. I was, however, struck at how calm the tone was compared to the acid sarcasm in his dispatches from the Scopes trial. I have to confess, I enjoyed the peacable Mencken more, not that the old trouble-maker doesn't peek through once in a while to give us a good laugh. There is, for instance, a little passage about a "rough Christian country." But I won't give it away - read it for yourself!

Fun to read
In 'Sleeping With Extra-Terrestrials,' Wendy Kaminer wrote that nobody writes like Mencken anymore. She's right, and her advice reminds us that it is always a joy to read such dense, intelligent prose, almost without regard to the subject matter.

In "Treatise on the Gods," Mr. Mencken offers a simple account for the rise of religion that is not founded on much more than his own imagination. But it is as defensible as anything written by anthropologists, and is certainly several orders of magnitude more sensible than taking the stories at face value. For the sort of "true believers" that Mencken would casually dismiss as the "vast herd of humanity," this book will be an affront and an insult. But to cowboys riding that herd, it's a delight.

The joy of sects
Who says comparative religion has to be dull? Mencken is on his best behavior here, but his characteristic flash and dazzle light up the book. As "The American Language", reflects Mencken's enduring interest in words, so this book reflects his fascination for religion in all it's varieties from high-toned to gaudy. While innumerable histories of religion have appeared before and since, probably none are so gracefully written and engaging. Even the pious will enjoy it. As for the "admittedly damned" (HLM's phrase), they will enjoy it all the more.

Great read, but left many shows out
I really had a wonderful time reading through "TV Mania", but I realized there were several shows which made an impact on America that were not listed in the timeline: what about "Mr. Peepers"?

TV MANIA
PERHAPS THE GREATEST BOOK THAT I HAVE SEEN WITH REFERENCE TO THE TV SHOWS THAT INFLUENCED MY LIFE. THE NOSTALGIA AND PICTORIAL DISPLAY OFFERED MANY WARM MEMORIES AND HUMORISTIC REFERENCES. WELL DONE, NOT OVERDONE.... BRAVO

TV LOVERS ALERT!!!!!
What a wonderful and loving book that chronicles tv from the beginning. The book is a treasure to hold. If you love tv you must not miss this.
