This book is the ultimate for true spiritual growth!
From the basics to the more in-depth, this book was written to share the foundational and positional truths of what Christ has already done. It opens up many eyes, especially those who are tired of striving, and who are looking for a better way. I went from a very legalistic background to a deeper knowledge of grace. I finally realized that it's not us working for God, it's God working through us. The Holy Spirit, through this book, opened my eyes to what God wants for me!

The most helpful book I have ever read on spiritual growth
The Complete Green Letters is the most helpful book on spiritual growth that I have read and I have been reading these kinds of books for 31 years. The truths have been largely forgetten by other writers today and Mr. Standford brings them back for all Christians to live and enjoy. This book can set the believer free from the power of sin over life. Thank you Mr. Stanford! I invite everyone to enjoy and learn to rest in the Lord Jesus Christ for life. Warning! This book will invade your life with the life of Christ Himself. Read and enjoy Him!!

This book has changed my life forever!!!
Miles Stanford explains HOW to walk in the Spirit and be delivered from sin. It's CHRIST IN ME and mentally accepting that self/sin was crucified with Christ. No longer I who live, but Christ living in me!!! Nowhere in all my church going have these scriptures been taught like he teaches them. My life will never be the same. Sin no longer has a hold on me. For me to live is Christ! Birth truths vs. Growth truths are all here. Deliverance from the penalty of sin AND the power of sin!!!

My daughter's favorite book!
Daughter Anna (now 19 years old) loved this book. It was her favorite above all others. As we sorted through some old kid things for give-away purposes, we stumbled upon this old, well worn copy of "The Velveteen Rabbit." She insisted we keep the book for HER children.

This was her book that Mama (me!) had to read to her again and again and again. As soon as the last word was read on the last page, it was "Mama, please read it again!"

(how I miss those days, by the way!)

The book also has a powerful message about Love that children understand and cherish.

This is a wonderful book. No child should be without their own copy of "The Velveteen Rabbit."

Velveteen Rabbit story good for parents and children
It's a sweet story of a 'simple' stuffed rabbit amidst the more 'complex' modern toys in a boy's "toy collection". The rabbit starts to believe that in order to get the love of the boy, he needs to appear 'real', or be able to zoom about like the motorized toys...
(And I'm not going to tell you the end hahahahaha!!!)
It was great having that read to me, while I was hugging my stuffed animals in bed.
But -- in a way, at first glance it looks like a simple story, but it is actually a surprisingly complex story. Leave it on your child's bookshelf as he/she grows up and he/she will reread it again and again as he/she questions issues such as "who am I?", "what does it mean to be 'real'"?, "what is my role in this world?", and even "what is death"?

A TRUE CLASSIC FILLED WITH A VERY IMPORTANT MESSAGE
I seldom write reviews on children's books, although I love them with a passion. My children are now mothers and my grandchildren are past young childhood. However, I believe that somewhere deep inside each of us remains a small child that still loves fairy tales, cotton candy, and walking barefoot in the grass. This book was one of my children's favourites, along with "Charlotte's Web;" both were also my own personal favourites. When my children were six years old reading this book became a nighly adventure until I knew the words by heart. For the reviewer who rated the book with a one star due to a spelling error, my heart goes out to you; you have sadly missed something very important - the message. The book is not about spelling, editing or lack thereof; it is about encouragement and love.

The book tells the story of a toy, sawdust-filled rabbit who wishes with all his heart to become real. The message contained in this book is poignant, heart-warming and touching, and one that you will never foreget as long as you live. It is a story of beauty, wonder and love. Any child who misses out on "The Velveteen Rabbit" is missing out on one of life's greatest lessons. I cannot say enough good things about this wonderful, wonderful book and highly recommend it to children...and the grown-up child in all of us.

Pretty Swell
In the Green Mile Serial Thriller I love how Stephen King takes so many little stories about love and friendships and adds a twist of evilness and darkness with in each of the characters. From how he builds up the plot not just for the main characters but for everyone of the characters in the novel from the talented Mr. Jingles to the most focused character John Coffey. King kept me on the edge of my seat the whole time while he was building up to the final part, is Coffey gonna live or die and I really loved that but didn't like the outcome. But because of the time period it was set in I can understand reasons for the ending King gave The Green Mile. The book was really great and to any Stephen King fan if I were you I would read it.

I am spellbound, what a great book & writer.
I wonder if there are more books like the Green Mile by Stephen King. First book I have ever listened to that was written by him. I thought he wrote about strange events. I was spellbound. I was transported into the story and couldn't wait until the next tape. What a great writer. Any suggestions on which one I should read next?

HEART TOUCHING!!!
I must say " the green mile " series was a nice change from Stephen Kings other books. It made me laugh and it made me cry, none of his other books have ever affected me like that!!! I'm really glad I bought the whole series at one time, if I would've bought them one at a time I would've been crazy by the time the last one got here!! I couldn't put them down, I read one after another!!!!My heart will always be with his HORROR stories though.....because I like the "things that go bump in the night". Thank you Stephen King for giving me a chance to see another side of your writing ability.I'll be waiting and looking forward to getting my next book in the mail.

A great book for a great price!!
In preparing our list of Christmas books to share with others, we had to search far and wide on amazon to find this particular book, a paperback edition of the classic Night Before Christmas.

This is the book I've used for years when reading this story to my own children, passing on Tasha Tudor and other illustrators. Why?

Although we can find the same poem and pay a lot more, with award winning illustrators, the illustrations provided by Douglas Gorsline are surely the best. They are quite colorful, and offer details little children love looking into...cats lie sleepily on the window sill, we see an overview of the town, the presents spilling from the open sack are intriguing and plentiful, and Jolly St. Nick is -- well, quite Jolly (as you can see by looking at the cover!)

The story is an "abridged version" - I'm not sure about other parents, but we read this on Christmas Eve, and we only have so much time and energy. Everything we remember from the classic poem by Clement Clarke Moore is in this version.

(From "'Twas the Night Before Christmas, and all through the house, not a creature was stirring, not even a mouse" to "He sprang to his sleigh, to his team gave a whistle, And away they all flew like the down of a thistle. But I heard him exclaim, ere he drove out of sight,"HAPPY CHRISTMAS TO ALL, AND TO ALL A GOOD-NIGHT!" In between we have everything, from the names of the eight tiny reindeer, to a belly that shakes like a bowl full of jelly, including dry leaves that before the wild hurricane fly, when they meet with an obstacle, mount to the sky".

In other words, don't be scared off by 'abridged'!)

Perhaps a hardcover edition might be more appropriate if you're giving a gift (unless you're giving to more than one child), but this book is one of the best offers we've found!

A classic done simply and inexpensively!

The Night Before Christmas illustrated by Tasha Tudor
I discovered this book 31 years ago, for my daughter and it is still loved by all the family. The illustrations are wonderful, warm, charming and delightful and bring a special meaning to the story. We still read it to all the young children on Christmas Eve and for adults we read the story and pass a grab bag gift every time the word THE is mentioned. It would not be Christmas without this book. It is magical.

A beautiful edition, to give as a gift
We have an inexpensive paperback version (see our reviews) of this classic poem, and we said that's enough for us. That was before we looked through this beautifully illustrated (by Bruce Whatley) edition of The Night Before Christmas.

The lyrics are the same, from book to book, but the fanciful illustrations in this one are enough to engage adults and children as they read this book together.

The perfect gift for any family whose Christmas tradition includes reading this classic!

Accurate Portrait of a Land and Culture in Transistion
Author Waterman does it again!

Arctic Crossing is a very readable and powerful solo tale of high drama in one of the most unforgiving corners of our planet. Jon's richly written tale captures the many moods of both a hauntingly beautiful landscape and the Inuit Culture that inhabit it. The myriad challenges faced by the author in his epic trek should be reason enough to lure virtually any adventure travel reader. Offering far more than yet another tale of polar endurance, Waterman's keen observations of Inuit Culture becomes the unexpected hook.

Having spent three years living in a remote Siberian Yupik Eskimo village, I found this book to be compelling in its honest appraisal of Indigenous Northern Culture. Rapid cultural change and its associated dysfunction which challenges many Arctic cultures is typically not well documented in print. That which exists often times is either candy coated or worse yet, over sensationalized. Reported with a sense of respect, Jon's accounting of cultural interactions are at times brutal, yet refreshingly accurate.

This book captures the unique rhythms of remote Arctic ecosystems through rich imagery. The author was very obviously moved by his time spent in the spare pastel light of the Barrens. His writing is focused on capturing that elusive essence of the Arctic experience that defies the average writer's efforts. Fortunately, Waterman is no ordinary writer.

A thoughtful adventurer and a great writer!
I like Jon's writing, it's filled with thought and insight into the place where he is. Wether he's preparing to climb the mountains of Alaska, kayak the gulf of Baja, or traverse the frigid Canadian Arctic, Jon does his homework. I am impressed by the degree of research he puts in prior to embarking on a trip. For it is not just the how of adventuring, the going from point A to B that concerns him, but rather who has been there before, who is there now, what was this place like and how has it changed for better or worse.

In this, his eighth book, he tells us about his 1997 2,200-mile journey across the Arctic, much of it alone. Here are his first-hand observations of the Inuit - their life, language, beliefs, and their reactions to global assimilation. He also reveals the extreme physical risks and psychological dangers as he kayaked and skied the legendary Northwest Passage. This book recently won the 2001 Banff Mountain Book Festival Best Adventure Travel Book Award.

You can't go wrong with any of Jon's books. I look forward to his next work!

Live the adventure in the the Arctic
This book is beautifully written! Unlike most adventure books, Waterman's account of his 3-year Arctic adventure, leaves behind the hero perspective and sincerely tells a story about the Inuit culture, the Arctic landscape and its amazing wildlife, and how he travels solo through it all. Find out what it would be like to journey alone without seeing another person (or signs of another person) for weeks at a time...how many of us have been completely alone, even for a day? His details of the people once called Eskimos are thoughtful and compassionate. The Inuit are faced with modern day assimilation while desperately trying to hold on to their 1,000 year old traditions. This struggle is carefully outlined, as he was able to get close to "The People". His encounters with wildlife, especially bears, made me wish I were there, but at the same time thankful to be reading about it in the comforts of home. This book is for anyone wanting to know the meaning of true exploration and wanting to learn more about the beuaty and mystery of the Arctic and Inuit.

A decent introduction to New York
I found the Eyewitness Guide to be unexpectedly detailed in listing the various sights of the city, though not nearly as much as a more textual guide, e.g., the Fodor's. I'm sure, however, the photography is an element which helps tourists orient themselves quite a bit more easily than the more cumbersome (but more informative) Fodor's. That said, quite a bit of history and explanation is woven into the Eyewitness as well, and it makes up for its relative conciseness with enticing design. The guide is a book which would actually make one want to visit New York, and one which makes navigation within it quite simplified. Furthermore, it seems more portable. Combining quite a bit of information with the visual beauty of a National Geographic guide made this a success.

The guide does seem to be tailored quite a bit toward non-American tourists, with descriptions of how payphones work and of American cuisine. Still, a bit of laughably obvious information to Americans is made up for with such features as two page spreads for relatively unvisited museums and attractions, with isometric diagrams and "must-see" exhibits.

The kind of quality you expect from Eye-Witness
Wow! I knew I loved Eye-Witness Travel Guides,I'm abolutely hooked on their incredibly useful method of presentation, but this is the first time I return to a place I once lived and used one of their guides. What a "Eureka" moment! Using their pictoral presentation of maps and sights, I "SAW" New York in its entirety for the first time. The overview and breaking down of the city into sections gives the tourist total control of the situation.
I highly recommend this book for the sights and maps.
The restaurant recommendations were not very good. After the amazing recommendations in their Budapest and Paris Guides, this list was a disappointment. Buy a different Restaurant and Hotel guide, but use this to get around and make the most of your time.

Four Weeks in New York
I am planning to spend four weeks in New York in your summer, my winter. Wanting to buy a good travel guide I went to the largest book shop in Melbourne (AU). With a choice of around 100 books - this book stood out. Concentrating more on what to do and see then the usual 'where can I stay for under $50 a night'or want a plethora of restaurant this book took me into the galleries, museums and architecture delights of New York. I feel it is designed for the traveller who wants to jump in boots and all. Thanks to this book I know my four weeks will be filled with exploring this fascinating city. Best book to get.

Edge of your seat worry! Mr. Jingles! Coffey! Bad Percy!
I loved this book! There was only one negative aspect: the beginning of each part repeats what happened in the last part because it was first a serial and that got annoying. However, Mr. Jingles was delightful. Wild Bill was terrifing, and Delecroix's execution was hideously frightening. What if that really did happen at some executions? (Which it probably did.) Coffey left me wondering what is wrong with our judicial system. What if someone like John Coffey is on death row? Could you kill a miracle? The parallelism between Percy and the orderly was a great concept. They both left a bitter taste in my mouth. Both were wasting their energy trying to destroy lives that would be gone soon enough. I liked The Green Mile better the The Stand, Rose Madder, Thinner, and Gerald's Game. A new King Classic! I can't wait for the movie!!

The King is Back! It's good to be the King!
I used to be a die-hard King fan but recently (over the past 7-8yrs or so) I thought his books were becoming predictable and banal. I tried to read the Regulators and when I realized what was the cause of the trouble I could predict the rest of the book. THE GREEN MILE on the other hand, puts Stephen King back on track. I thought the characters were well developed, the plot was intricate, and the story was innovative. You were able to empathize with the characters; hate some (The Kid) and love others (the mouse). You are surprized and moved when you understand that Coffee was not as two dimensional as you're initially led to believe. All in all, a great read. Highly recommended. And this comes from a very tough critic. Well done! 9.5!

One of King's Best
I am a diehard King fan. When I heard of this 6 part book coming out, I was like, no way will it ever work. I stand corrected. I found myself waiting at the local bookstore for the next chapter. I just couldnt wait to read the next part of this series. The characters in the book were well thought out. Now after I saw the movie, I saw not one difference between the book and the movie. Again, the actors portrayed their book counterparts absolutely perfectly. If Shawshank Redemption received 7 award nominations, I wonder just how many this one will be nominated for. I just hope that if it is nominated, and I think it should be, it will win!

A great read!
Jeff Alt did a wonderful job taking the reader along with him on his enourmous journey to not only raise money for his brother with cerebral palsy, but also on completing the 2000+ mile Appalacian Trail. I would definetly recommend this book to anyone who has an interest in the outdoors or inspiring stories!

Success is a journey not a destination.
I was first introduced to Jeff Alt and his wonderful book in Damascus, VA at Trail Days 2000. This book is a absolute must read. After talking with Jeff for some time, I left the store with restored hope in humanity. I had been searching for inspiration to push me over the edge and commit to hiking the trail. His book convinced me it was something I will definitey do.

Great Book!
Jeff,
I loved your book and all your stories of the trail. It was a quick and enjoyable read that had me laughing out loud. When is your next book coming out so I can read it too? Keep Hiking!

Good idea..bad examples
As someone who literally put my blood, sweat and tears into training for my first marathon, I was almost offended by the numerous stories of people who just decided to run, with little or no training. Kind of like not paying your dues. There were several examples in which people downplayed the seriousness of this undertaking. Sure, they paid for it with tough marathons, but that is besides the point. I bought this book to read on the plane on my way to my first marathon. It so discouraged me and trivialized my efforts that I didn't feel like what I was doing was such an accomplishment after all. I ended up leaving the book on the plane and trying to forget about the ease at which some of these people decided to run 26.2 miles.

I love this book!
This book is a must for anyone who wants to run a marathon. It is a collection of essays written by runners from all levels, including world class runners to a Portland, Oregon nurse who details her first marathon. All these stories are short enough to be read in a single sitting, some leave you thrilled by the run, others leave you with tears in your eyes.

I purchased this book before I ran my first marathon hopeing to gain insite into what I would encounter. I also bought several other copies as gifts to friends who needed some encouragement to run their first marathon. It certainly is an exceptionally nice gift for any runner or runner-to-be.

Just can't wait too see volumn 2 of First Marathons!

Will Power
The different stories show how common people took up running. There is wide range of marathon finishers and therefore it is easy to find somebody in the book you can relate too.
What this book does best is inspire those who contemplate running a marathon. I took up running a few months ago, slowly building up my mileage. The incredible stories in the book show me that indeed it is possible to run 26.2 miles, or even more for ultramarathons. At one point it becomes a matter of mind over matter. Beyong running, this book is about the incredible abilities that lie within each one of us if we give ourselves the right training and believe we can achieve what we've decided to do.

A compelling account of Vietnam combat
Dwight Birdwell and William Nolan have produced a very good personal account of an armored crewman's 16-month tour in Vietnam. In addition to absorbing combat narratives, Birdwell provides a lot of details and context to help readers understand his story. He gives explicit reasons why his unit's morale and performance deteriorated over his tour, and how the Tet Offensive changed the nature of the war. I highly recommend this book to any student of the military or the Vietnam War. U.S. military officers should read it for examples of how good leadership can inspire a unit, and bad leadership can cost lives. Birdwell highlights the role of good, solid NCOs as the beating heart of a military unit.

TOPS THE LIST
Having read hundreds of books about Vietnam war combat from the perspective of infantry, Rangers, Special Forces, LRRPs, SEALs, and helicopter gunships, I was pleased to find a rare book dealing with American armor combat. With the help fo veteran Vietnam war book author Keith William Nolan, Dwight Birdwell has produced an action packed, easy to read, page turner on his 16 months in Vietnam with a 25th Division armor unit, protecting the main supply route from Saigon to Tay Ninh near the Cambodian border. Arriving Sept. 1967, pre-Tet Birdwell's service as a M48 Patton tank crewman, began with a well lead unit, high moral, and eager for a fight with the Viet Cong. Tet changed all that when Birdwell's unit was dispatched to Saigon where they ran headlong into an enemy regiment which had broke through the wire at Tan Son Nhut Air Base on January 31, 1968. Birdwell's bravery and initiative under intense enemy RPG and gunfire and panic of some fellow troopers won him a Silver Star and a Purple Heart. The narrative of the searing engagement draws one into the action like you are a witness to the blast of tank cannon and the whine of enemy bullets. Birdwell wins a second Silver Star at An Duc in July, 1968, while describing the steady decline of morale and efficiency as troopers realize Washington had no strategy for winning the war. Despite heavy combat, Birdwell manages to preserve his humanity and a measure of idealism, which motivated him to volunteer for Vietnam service, as a teenager. Upon his return to Oklahoma, Birdwell used his G. I. Bill to get an education and eventually earn a law degree and now practices law in Oklahoma City. Of Cherokee heritage, he served for two years as the Chief Justice of the Cherokee Nation. Birdwell's book provides an excellent map to conveniently track ambush and battle site. Also, there are 16 pages of photographs. His epilogue features a "status report" on many officers and troopers he served with and survived the war, including his squadron commander Glenn K. Otis, who went on to be Commander and Chief, U.S Army Europe. Birdwell's book should be on the must read list of every military officer and NCO who might serve in a ground combat unit or support them.

The Truth About Vietnam By Birdwell & Nolan
This Is a story of truth from the men who were In vietnam.Nolan served in the vietnam war.And from reading this book he takes you there. And tells us the american people what we never knew that happened during this war.An amazing truthful book to read.I would give it ten stars."Truth In justice for all of our vets" They are the back bone of this country. The goverment should know. When our vets came home sick and dying from agent orange. Our goverment denied everything.Even the one who gave the orders to drop It. Killed his own son. When his son died he knew it was from agent orange. He later killed himself because of his guilt.Since he was a high ranking officer he was sworn to silence.Like all the other military officers. Our goverment does not care about the men who not only died for this country. Also the ones they killed and never admitted to.The cost to the goverment would be to great. So deny ,deny, at all cost. As the govement has always lied about our vets. When they came home sick from Vietnam also Saudi Arabia. The goverment denied all of this again.Deformed babies, cancer,of all kinds. The goverment again denied our men came in contact with any chemicals to make them sick. When it has been proven that the air they breathed and the contact with tanks were contaminated from Iraq weapons used on our military soldiers.WHY''
