The best starting point for your journey into ITS
We in the ITS community have been waiting a long time for a book just like this one. Although it is primarily intended for an audience in developing countries, this is a great place for anyone to get a complete and accurate introduction to the many-faceted world of Intelligent Transportation Systems. The authors, under the excellent guidance of PIARC, have assembled some of the best materials and advice across the range of technical, organizational and commercial issues that are found in ITS and transportation. I highly recommend the investment of time and money in acquiring and reading this book. Get it, read it, use it and our transportation systems can only get better.

1926 Boston Marathon Winner Still Going Strong at Age 93
Johnny Miles set a new Boston course record in 1926 in his first ever marathon. Now, at the age of 93 he is by far the oldest living winner of the Beantown classic.

I visited with Johnny Miles in October 1998, at his home in Hamilton, Ontario and took photographs of him wearing his prized possession-the jacket he received at the 100th running of the Boston in 1996. He has slowed down a bit but is still sharp enough to sign his autograph for the Johnny Miles Foundation in the few remaining copies of his biography: Johnny Miles, Nova Scotia's Marathon King. The Foundation is in New Glasgow, Nova Scotia, Canada, c/o Dr. John Miles Williston/902-752-7470).

For many Canadian runners, in particular those from Atlantic Canada, the Johnny Miles book continues to serve as an inspiration. As the author, I frequently receive phone calls and e-mail (footless@escape.ca) from those who've been inspired by the story of Johnny Miles. Recently copies of it were taken to South Korea by a Winnipeg, Manitoba runner to be presented to the two Korean runners who won the Boston.

This year is the 70th anniversary of Johnny Miles' second Boston record breaking victory and more than one runner from Canada, and perhaps even Bill Rodgers himself, was wearing a T-shirt in the 1999 Boston, from the Johnny Miles 10K classic in Pictou County, Nova Scotia.

Will Cloney of Boston who was BAA race director for more than 40 years said:"There hasn't been a Johnny Miles in Boston since Johnny Miles. He was really the first and the last surprise winner."

You can still find this book in your library as well as in used bookstores. Ask Amazon to find it for you.

Betty Miles is a great intermediate fiction author
I laid in bed the other night, trying desperately to think of the name of the book I'd loved so much in junior high. Then it came to me: "Just the Beginning". Cathy is the younger sister of Julia, a brilliant student and class valedictorian of her high school. You can imagine how difficult this must be for Cathy, an average student with equally average grades. To make matters worse, all her friends are wealthy, while her parents make a modest combined income- her Dad runs a run down drug store and her Mom is a cleaning lady for all the richies in town (including cleaning Cathy's friend's houses). Since Julia is bright, there's no doubt she'll rise above their circumstances and get a full scholarship to Yale. Between her family and the faculty at school, Cathy feels huge amounts of pressure to be just like her big sister. Unfortunately for Cathy, a suspension for ditching school is forthcoming, and she'll have to tell her parents, who she feels are already disappointed in her. Cathy has to learn the hard way that her parents love her just for who she is. Being a younger sister, I remember sometimes feeling the pressure to be like my older sister, but like Cathy, I came to realize it was all in my head. I loved this book and read it from cover to cover on a monthly basis. Betty Miles is a great author for any parents looking for books for their kids (ages 11-14).

The Last Straw
Dean couldn't help but feel how deseparetly he needed money as he was sitting in Leonard's den facing a safe containing 30,000 worth of bearer bonds. While Leonar ran off for ten minutes, Dean stole the the bonds and easily exchanged them for cash. The problem arises when Leonard notices that the bonds are missing way to early --one crime quickly moves to another - love, larceny leading to a brutal murder...but, this time it had been easier to redeem the bonds then himself! ---This book was all but impossible to put down! ...such a quick suspensful, fulfilling read!

"The Corporate Transformation Framework."
"Corporate transformation challenges come in many forms and confront executive leaders with an array of vexing questions: How can I help my company, which is at the top of its competitive game, sidestep complacency and energize people to redirect their efforts and reposition their organization? How can I lead my company, which has lost its way and greatly depleted its resources, to revitalize itself for competitive excellence? How can our recently merged companies or functions overcome business and cultural differences? Or, more simply, now that I am in a position to do so, how can I effectively take charge of my organization and help people develop a new agenda to lead us through the next phase of its development? These questions, and more, have found successful resolution through the framework for leading corporate transformation described in this book (R. H. Miles)."

In this context, in the first part of this book, Robert H. Miles offers a framework for leading corporate transformation. This framework, as stated by Miles, identifies the major/required tasks that a leader-indeed, that leaders at all leves in the organization-must perform to achieve successful transformation without exposing the corporation to unacceptable risk :

I. Generate Energy for Transformation

* Confront reality

* Create and reallocate resources

* Raise the bar

* Model desired behaviors

II. Develop a Vision and Business Success Model

* Develop a strategic vision

* Model business success

* Analyze the total system: current vs. vision states

* Identify the gaps

* Focus on a few transformation initiatives

III. Align the Organization

* Restructure

* Implement infrastructure

* Reshape the culture

* Build core competencies

IV. Create a Transformation Process Architecture

* Educate and involve

* Create coordination and feedback mechanisms

* Communicate progress

* Fill transformation skill gaps

According to R. H. Miles these elements of the framework provide not only a platform for launching a corporate transformation, but also for managing transitions from one phase of transformation to the next en route to the vision state.

I highly recommend.

Just what beginning reader enjoys!
My 6 year old son loves this book for two reasons: he can read it himself and he loves the adventures of Little Critter.

As the parent, I really appreciate the "values" put into all Little Critter books, and am excited they are now being written for younger readers.

Look What Came from France

I love this book
This is a children's book, but as a French teacher and a lover of all things French, I love this book. It talks about and shows pictures of various things that originally came from France. For example, did you know that the first stethoscope, braille writing for the blind, photography, motion pictures, scuba gear, Teflon, and ambulances all originated in France? This is just of few of the items mentioned in this book. A recipe for Chocolate Mousse in included plus a key to a few basic French words. I found this book a refreshing joy to read through. Mmmm, I think I see a bulletin board idea coming....

I enjoyed this book
I think this book is perfect for kids who feel that they are "not perfect." Everyone has some downsides, and in this book 14 year old Rosalie had quite few. It shows kids that there are more things to life then just loking on. You should accept yourself the way you are, because if you keep trying to be someone else like Rosaile wanting to be Jill, your just going to keep hating yourself rather then doing something about what you can change.

very valuable resource
The definitive work on Lotus twin cam engines. I used it to rebuild (and re-engineer) a motor for a 74 Europa. I've seen
no other documentation - including the Lotus shop manuals - that have more and better detail than Wilkens' book.

this is a delightful book, and an excellent story for new readers, with a rich storyline and enjoyable characters.
