this book is both beautifully written and illustrated. Los trully captures New York and all of it's energy.

Beautiful!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
I had to buy two of these, one to cut out the pages to frame.

Loved it!!!
It's so refreshing to see a solid children's book about great artists. The illustration is really hip and colorful. I bought this book as a gift, but then got another copy for myself.

Miles Away is always near my house
We have just been introduced to this author by a friend and can hardly wait to read her next book. She is the most up and coming children's writer we have seen in a while. And we just love the pictures, the stories, the everything....this will probably be our new favorite Christmas present to give.

Miles Comes Through
I read this book to my Grandchildren (ages 3 and 5) five times in a row. They loved it. Miles shows that you can make mistakes, but in the end he finally gets it right. The illustrations have bounce and zip.

Miles Away from Home
Silly, fun and happy read. Lots of bright and detailed illustrations. I found it on the American Book Sellers Association Kids Pick of the List for Spring 2001.

We just love this book!!

We were certainly able to relate to Miles Away from Home. We have a Golden Retriever and our family is just like Miles' family. Avila our dog, is always getting into trouble, too!! We love her just like we've become attached to Miles.

Mirror Dance: A Vorkosigan Adventure (Bujold, Lois McMaster. Vorkosigan Adventure.)

Read her books
Mirror Dance is a touching, gripping, and hair-raising book on several levels. A major character is killed and then goes missing and the hunt is up. But the strengths of this book are in the relationships among the characters and how both the relationships and the characters themselves change. I was in such a sweat to know whther he lives or dies that I actually read the end about halfway through. Bujold makes you care for her characters as if they were your friends. I bought 2 of Bujold's books because they were Hugo winners. I have since read and reread everything she has written. If you have not read any of her work, I envy you, as you get to experience Miles' universe for the first time.

It doesn't get any better than this!
Bujold's series of novels about Miles Naismith Vorkosigan (one of SF's all-time best characters) are some of the best space-operas ever written. And Mirror Dance may well be her best yet. If you haven't read the others, start with Shards of Honor and then Barrayar (which are about his parents, and both quite good), then the Warrior's Apprentice, The Borders of Infinity, The Vor Game, Cetaganda, and Brothers in Arms (all very good). Of course, if you just can't wait, can't find them, or can't afford them, Mirror Dance is still outstanding on its own, but it's even better if you've read all the pre-quels. (Cetaganda was written after Mirror Dance, but takes place earlier in Miles's life.) Another sequel, Memory, is in the works (a 3-chapter teaser is included in Cetaganda) and looks to take up pretty much where Mirror Dance Leaves off

Mirror dance: Am I you?

Miles is dead, lost, presumed...
Lost.

Mark is taken to Barrayar and discovers that he now is Lord Mark Vorkosigan. But he caused Miles' death, and now there's only one thing left to do: Mark has to return to Jackson's whole and find his brother, and maybe himself.

But they both are wanted by the Great Houses, for different reasons.

And of course nothing is as simple as it should be...

Vorkosigan adventure follows, much and often, and maybe, just maybe someone is found.

Southern Cross to Pole Star: Tschiffely's Ride : Being the Account of 10,000 Miles in the Saddle Through the Americas from Argentina to Washington

Ride With Tschiffley Through a Vanished World
Aime Tschiffley, the most resiliant and capable of Buenos Aires' schoolmasters, wrote this truly astonishing story of his ride from Argentina to Washington, DC. South and Central America before WWII was still in many ways as the old Spanish had left it - some of it deliciously civilized, much of it as wild as can be imagined. With his two remarkable Creole horses, Mancha and Gato, Tschiffley journeys through a world that no longer exists today and seems remote and ancient to the modern reader. Tschiffley's prose is somewhat matter-of-fact, but in some ways this serves to emphasise the very strangeness of the countryside and its peoples, and underscores the author's own courage. Tshiffley is a product of his times, and some of his sentiments are out of place today, but this too places this book within a time and place long past. From "Don Roberto's" oddly moving introduction to journey's end in the United States, one grows to admire Tschiffley and love his horses, the two friends Mancha and Gato.

FROM A TIME LONG PAST
FROM BUENOS AIRES TO WASHINGTON DC IN TWO AND A HALF YEARS ON HORSEBACK. A.F. TSCHIFFELY RODE TEN THOUSAND MILES FROM THE SOUTHERN CROSS TO THE POLAR STAR AROUND 1930. HE MORE THAN LIKELY WAS THE ONLY MAN EVER TO DO THIS AT ANY TIME; CERTAINLY TO WRITE ABOUT IT. REMOTE CITIES AND SEAPORTS, BACK TO THE PAST AND ON LONELY TRAILS DID THE MAN TRAVEL. TOUCHING FROM TIME TO TIME ON HARDSHIP, SOLVING PROBLEMS, CONFRONTING THE CURIOUS, HE AND HIS TWO HORSES HAD A GREAT ADVENTURE.

Very exciting adventure
It's a bold undertaking by a man who learned to live very closely with two horses. The horses were the resource that enabled him to succeed in this adventure of 10,000 miles from Buenos Aires to Washington DC. It's a page-turner!

GREAT MOTIVATOR
MY 6 YEAR OLD WAS FEELING A LITTLE DISCOURAGED STARTING FIRST GRADE BECAUSE THERE WERE ALOT OF CREATIVE DRAWING ASSIGNMENTS. THIS BOOK BOOSTED NOT ONLY HIS IMAGINATION AND CREATIVITY BUT IT HAD A TREMENDOUS EFFECT ON HIS SELF ESTEEM.

My son loves this book!
I am a homeschooling mom who was at her wits' end trying to motivate her kids to write until I found this series. My oldest child is working on Mile 3, and her six year old brother is absolutely loving this book. What kid could resist an activity like "Draw a picture of yourself doing something you like to do," and "Draw a picture of yourself doing something you don't like to do"? You can probably guess where my son drew himself cleaning his room!

SUPER ME
What a wonderful book! Fun and creative it makes writing enjoyful for all ages. My 5 year old loved it so much that I purchased all the other levels. I also purchased SUPER ME for birthday gifts for all her friends. What a great book!

The Thousand Mile Summer
Published in Paperback by Vintage Books (1989)

The Ultimate Escape
Colin Fletcher managed to escape civilization with a simple plan. He would walk the length of California, including the Mojave Desert. The Ranger in Death Valley worried a great deal about him, but Fletcher's knowledge and understanding of the environment kept him safe and alive. In fact he enjoyed the "walk". Colin Fletcher is an excellent writer and this book is, in my opinin, is one of his best. I think I have read them all. He notices and describes details in vivid language. The clouds, the wind, the color of the valley, the trout, even the beetles and spiders don't miss his eye or nose.
He also describes the details of his hardships and joys, equipment failures and successes. He makes you feel as if you are with him on the trip, and often you may wish you were there. Some very well composed pictures are included. The trip took exactly 6 months. In the end he says "Then I walked down through the trees toward the road that would take me back to San Francisco and everything the city now offered."

I recommend the book to anyone. It is a good story, great adventure, and written by an unusual person. (He would like being called "unusual", I think.)

Nonstop reading.
This book will change your whole outlook on nature. Are you willing to spend the summer walking, alone, then come along for this journey into your thoughts.

Those thousand miles become the reader's
It doesn't take long for the reader to get broken in along Fletcher's trail of adventure from the Mexican border of eastern California to the Oregon border. The author takes us along the Colorado trail following the river for a number of days until we spring for the Mohave desert. Fletcher had placed, before his hike, a number of strategic caches of water along his desert route. We are as anxious as he to get to the next cache, particularly as we approach Death Valley in early spring before the overwhelming heat sets in. His descriptions of desert flowers and rolling mounds of sand stretching to dark and spiney ridges rising from the valley floor compel us to make plans to visit Death Valley in the near future. We are relieved when we hop out of Death Valley into the Panamints and scrub forests of the lower Sierra. When we climb high into snow country, our eyes hurt in the glaring snow. But the chill of fourteen thousand feet is more than welcome after the hot Mohave sands. We walk along with Fletcher in the high Sierra to push our toe across the border and touch Oregon soil. We experience the heat, the rattlers, the desert poppies, the cool downsloping breezes from the high Sierra, and the icy waters of alpine streams by reading THE THOUSAND MILE SUMMER. Such a book is a rare treat for those of us seemingly locked into a time-pressure capsule of corporate work

Essential element of Gulf War history.
This reviewer deplores the mandatory requirement for rating "stars".

The important contribution of the Franch Army in the Gulf War has been largely overlooked in the English-speaking countries. Their "left hook" around Saddam's forces was a crucial element in the strategy of his defeat. Perhaps more important for the future, for the first time since World War Two, French and American troops stood side by side against a common enemy, rediscovering their common bonds and heritage in the process. Colonel Cooke, a French-fluent military intelligence and armor officer who teaches Middle Eastern history in civilian life, was uniquely qualified for liason with the "Division Daguet" (French 6th Light Armored Division), bringing to the task not only military expertise but a sensitive and informed understanding of these highly capable but prickly warriors. His book is an admirably clear and complete record of the Daguet operations, and has enough context to serve as a good one-volume history of the overall land conflict as well. Highly recommended.

A unique, off-the-beaten-path travel guide and planner.
Unlike most travel guides on Chicago, Bill Franz's Alternative Chicago is designed for readers interested in what Chicago has to offer the visitor regarding counter-culture and neighborhood eccentric attractions. Franz offers a neighborhood-by-neighborhood exploration of hundreds of distinctively Chicago places like "Smuggler's Row", "Medusa's Circle", "The Ennui Cafe", and "Dr. Wax". This superbly original compendium of addresses, maps, store hours, and telephone numbers will enable the reader to create a truly unique, memorable, off-the-beaten-path trip whether they are an out-of-town newcomer or a long-time denizen and resident.

Alternative Chicago is extremely informative & well-written
In Alternative Chicago, the author looks beyond the Sears tower or sightseeing in museums, because everyone probably already owns a travel book that lists those places as hot spots. He takes us into dingy bars where they sell the best beer, the record stores that sell rare vinyl, the book stores that sell nothing but leftist books, and of course the thrift stores where you can find the coolest clothes. This is written in succint, fresh language that other travel books wish they could emulate. You forget that this is a travel book and not your friend jotting down his favorite hangouts. It's much more than that, though. The author has icons to represent the different types of places these are - bars, clubs, record stores, sellers of knicknacks, clothing stores, sex shops, etc, as well as providing maps, hours of operation and telephone numbers to these places. He relates the good and the bad and tells us why. One thrift store is stinky; another sells slightly soiled mattresses. This is the detail that every traveler needs when planning a trip to Chicago. After all, you can't see it all.

Just plain brilliant
I discovered this only because my youngest cousin, who goes to Harvard, read it in a course and came home insisting that I read it too. I take a strong interest in my ancestry (I'm Italian American, the grandson of immigrants) and this book hit me right between the eyes. It is one man's search for the meaning of his ethnicity and all the goodness that comes with it, before it all slips away. Tonelli writes in a funny, quirky, totally absorbing style that's never dry or ponderous. But he's writing about some of the most deeply meaningful, even sometimes sad aspects of being part of a genuine community in a time when community in American seems (to me) to be on the wane. This is the kind of book that could (and should) have become a minor classic of literary nonfiction, and also a book that every ethnic American would want to read, but I gather it did not back in '94 when it came out. But if you can find a copy today, grab it fast and get ready for a thrill.
