The stuff dreams are made of
I recentaly read this book as I was the captain of the last boat Des crewed on about 25 years after his trip. Lots of fun to read about his experance on the boat I spent 4 years sailing around the pacific in.

Facinating account and a reminder that not too long ago the world was a much bigger place with out GPS, WeatherFax and modern communication systems.

Reading about his trips makes me respect the guys who went out to sea in the '50 and '60, they were real adventures.

A well writen quick read that I highly recomend, esp. to younger readers - I you want something you can go out and get it.

What a start to a great career!!!
Not many people actually go out and fullfill their dreams. Des Kearns did.
His account of his cercumnavigation is extraordinary. The added history and insights to emotions along with great descriptions of scenery and personalities keep you enthralled.
My only complaint...it's too short!! Write a sequel Des.

1000 Mile War
Published in Paperback by Ballantine Books (1983)
Author: Brian Garfield
Amazon base price: $3.95
Average review score:

Excellent account of WW II in the Aleutian Islands
Garfield's "Thousand Mile War" is an excellent historical account of the often overlooked battle for Alaska in which Japan occupied two Aleutian Islands. The campaign was costly for The Rising Sun and may have helped contribute to its defeat at Midway. Garfield presents the story as an epic clash, which in deed it was. This is a first rate military history book.

1100 Miles With Monty: Security and Intelligence at Tac Hq
Published in Hardcover by Sutton Publishing (1990)
Author: Norman Kirby
Amazon base price: $20.00
Average review score:

A brilliant literary account of an historic experience
Norman Kirby's account of the second world war and the part he played in it from testing British national defences whilst with the intelligence service later to be reknowned as MI6 to making secretive contact with French underground members after the invasion of Normandy in 1944 before joining Field Marshal Montgomery and his staff as a translator at the surrender given by German Field Marshal Keitel was an insightful, compassionate and thrilling tail of one man's experience of human adventure and misadventure that should be read by anyone with an interest in what world war II really meant and the effect it had on the average man through the eyes of a very gifted and modest raconteur whose story should be taken to heart as a parable of what might be but for the bravery and sacrifice of so many.

12 Miles to Paradise: A People Story About Horses & Horseracing
Published in Hardcover by Airplane Reader Publishing (01 February, 2003)
Author: Ted Simendinger
Amazon base price: $19.95
Average review score:

Need a "feel good" read and a smile?
Weaving wonderful characters with beautiful venues and terrific pastimes, this book kindled warm memories of warm places and tugged on heartstrings stretched over some "tender territories". You needn't be a horse race fan to truly love this read, interact with the trials and comedies of relationships or be drawn into the storyline Ted Simendinger beautifully paints from Colorado, to South Beach, to Bimini and New Zealand. His insight into the frailties of Men vs. Women, and his ability to keep you hungry on multiple fronts, is marvelous.

Someone in this book will appeal to everyone, but my affinity for all the characters was established early on. It's a joy to see yourself, some of your past (and hopeful future) in a fast paced, witty and beautifully portrayed journey of men, women and beasts on a romp from flea markets to fame. If you've ever tasted long and unrequited love, thrown your fate to the winds of friendship and longed for life to come together in the most unforeseen of ways, then ride with the girls of the "Kiwi Posse" as they help fulfill the lives of unlikely American men and "Bonefish", the most lovable thoroughbred turned "beach-bum" you can imagine!

This book will help you follow your heart where you know it wants to lead you, have as much fun in as many places as you can, and realize that you need to fish whenever you can, love whenever you can and never give in to doubt that it really can be amazing in the end! Take a gamble, it's a sure thing!

18 Miles From Earth : Stories From Barber Shops, Front Porches and Supper Tables
Published in Paperback by Total Life Publications (20 November, 2000)
Author: Wayne Bristow
Amazon base price: $18.00

A mighty big kick out of Muleshoe!
We Texans can get mighty nostalgic about our country. When I was reading "18 Miles From Earth" I thought I could get a whiff of some good old Texas "blow dirt". Wayne Bristow must not have talked a lot in that barber shop of his dad's cause he sure "soaked up" a lot of stories. Anybody from that neck of the woods could sure identify with all these tales. I laughed till my sides ached, and relived many long forgotten memories. The stories are short enough you can lay the book aside often, and then go back for more. Good, like a cup of strong Texas coffee.

Scenic routes for everyone, great directions & descriptions
I read this book during the winter and couldn't wait for Spring to get going. You're in the saddle from the first tour to the last. I have ridden on two of the tours, one in North Hero and one in Stowe area, and the rides were deja vu...perfect directions and perfect suggestions. The simple route maps are outstanding. I'll be out there again this year with my dog-eared copy of 25 rides in Vermont keeping me company. I highly recommended this book to any serious or seriously casual rider.

Ethnic songs
Amy sings songs of the life of a sansei and gently leads us into the world of her life. Her writing is eloquent, sweet and angular; speaking of pain and loss and confusion without bitterness. It is poetry of reality. I enjoyed this volume of poems.

The Greatest Adventure At Sea Ever Told
I am not someone you would normally find reading a book on high sea adventure but for other reasons I purchased this book and I was hooked. It is a wonderful story full of humour, adventure and suspense. The characters become alive, paticularly Captain John C. Voss and you feel you are making the journey with him. The story is compelling and the reader finds it difficult to put the book down. The book actually contains two stories but the one that captured my attention was the journey on the Tilikum with Norman Luxton. The story awoke an interest in me to the point where I continued to research the characters and the vessel and the story of what happened to the Tilikum after she reached Margate, England. The Tilikum just celebrated her 100th anniversary of her departure from Oak Bay (Victoria, B.C.) where they have erected a plaque. She has been fully restored complete with new rigging and is now on display at the Maritime Museum in Victoria. For a book to interest a reader to the point where she will track down the vessel in order to see her means you have a very powerful and well written story.
