Glorious
An excellent intro to Faulkner. Beautifully written and one of his most accessible works. See the "Long Hot Summer" with Paul Newman and Joanne Woodward which is a filmisation of a novella of the same name in 'The Hamlet'. Great stuff!

A great study of a Civil War unit commander
Any book by Professor Williams is worth reading. He is a wonderful stylist and meticulous researcher. He is analytical and has a simple, plain spoken narrative style that educates the reader along with making it simple to follow his thesis, though by no means is his thinking simple. This book deserves to be read by all Civil War enthusiasts and also provides some insight to later historians who studied under this man, including Stephen Ambrose. This is a great book, and a much needed one.

Henry VI : Critical Essays (Shakespeare Criticism)
Published in Hardcover by Garland Publishing (2001)
Author: Thomas A. Pendleton
Amazon base price: $95.00
Used price: $57.00
Average review score:

Helpful Commentary on Obscure Shakespeare
Tom Pendleton's collection of essays on Shakespeare's "Henry VI" plays provides interesting and helpful commentary on texts unfamiliar to most readers and audiences. Pendleton's introduction offers perceptive discussion of the plays, their place in Shakespeare's canon, their significance in the Elizabethan period, and their critical fortunes over the centuries. The essays that follow examine the plays from a variety of perspectives, perhaps most interestingly in terms of performance, including Pendleton's own interview with a contemporary actor who performed recently in productions of these plays at the New York Shakespeare Festival. But there is also interesting coverage of filmed versions of the plays and of various critical issues surrounding these earliest of Shakespeare's works.

The Hidden Ground of Love: The Letters of Thomas Merton on Religious Experience and Social Concerns
Published in Paperback by Harvest Books (1993)
Authors: William H. Shannon and Thomas Merton
Amazon base price: $17.95
Used price: $8.95
Average review score:

Love is Merton's Hidden Ground
What is so amazing about this volume is that it covers only part of Thomas Merton's letters. These are on Religious Experience and Social Concerns. Merton was truly all things to all people, but through it all, he is still completely himself. His unique voice is evident in all his correspondence where he is by turns serious and funny, kind and generous. Some of these letters read like essays. Some are anecdotal. All are entertaining.

His correspondents included Dorothy Day and Daniel Berrigan, Erich Fromm and Aldous Huxley, two Popes, Ethel Kennedy, Coretta King - the list is staggering. He wrote to Christians and Jews, Buddhists and Hindus and Sufis, social activits and theologians, men and women. He wrote about contemplation and pacifism, literature and psychology. He had friends in all walks of life, and he was beloved by all.

This is a book to browse in and/or study, highly recommended to all admirers and students of Merton's thought and life.

A History of Western Philosophy
Published in Paperback by Harcourt (1969)
Author: William Thomas Jones

Used price: $4.89
Collectible price: $18.75
Average review score:

An excellent synthesis of philosophy and history
This book is wonderful, as are all in the series by Jones. He makes philosophy come alive by placing it in the context of it's contemporaneous civilization. The great questions asked by humanity, to which philosophy addresses itself, do not come out of thin air (please excuse the cliche.) These questions are born of the search for meaning, whether it be metaphysical, epistemological, ontological, ethical, political, or so forth. The sociocultural and political milieu beg questions of meaning and truth to each generation and individual, and each must answer for themselves. Jones places twentieth century philosophy in perspective. He scrutinizes, defines and explains the great philosophical movements of our century in the context of the times. The trauma of two world wars, the challenges of scientific discovery, the alienation of the individual, the seeming futility to grasp ultimate reality are inherent in our culture, and our great philosophers have attempted to formulate theories to make sense of these phenomena. A great book which puts flesh and breath into philosophy.

The brave and honorable 19th!
Author William Venner has assembled a useful book in relating to the history of the 19th Indiana. Venner has worked hard to back up his information offering many pages of footnotes that are handy in reenforcing his writing. This book is a fast read and chronologically follows the 19th from 1861 muster to final discharge as the unit is blended with the 20th Indiana. This book follows the hard fought history of a tough group of individuals that faced many conflicts such as Gainesville, Antietam, Gettysburg, The Wilderness and Petersburg. Venner does an excellent job covering the manpower involved in the regiment and how they survived with ever-dwindling numbers. Venner's writing is easy to read and not ever complex. This book is an excellent source for reading about the 19th Indiana as much is not written about this hard fighting group. 5 STARS!
