Comprehensive but accessible
Chemistry of the Environment is a great overview of the chemical processes of environmental change. There is a lot of in-depth discussion of air pollution and ozone depletion, as well as water pollution. The book covers virtually every topic in environmental sciences, even going into detail in some ares that are usually classified as environmental geology. The book is written clearly and is accessible for most people who have taken general chemistry courses. A background in organic chemistry would be helpful but is not necessary. This is one of those textbooks that I kept at the end of the semester, to have as a reference guide.

An outstanding General
General Bruce Cooper Clark met with us at our reunion in Knoxville, TN in 1974. Of course he had his book for sale and autographed it for all who purchased it. He was highly complimentary of the job that my unit the 275th AFABn did in defense of St. Vith. He was a graduate of the University of Tennessee. His book is very interesting and he says his armored tactics were designed for the Single wing Football formations that the University of TN made famous under General Neyland their long time football coach.

Pleasant Little Collection of Essays
Conversations with William Faulkner is a wonderful little collection of essays about Faulkner by those who were lucky enough to have known him in all different capacities. His friends, neighbors, and publishers discuss Faulkner's life and works with additional input by a few of his students while a guest lecturer at Ole Miss. This book is a must have for any fan of Faulkner's work who would like to know the author more closely.

The trickster Coyote at her best...now messing up Columbus!
America is the country that it is just because Coyote wanted to find a good baseball team! Or so says Thomas King in this extremely playful take off on both the legendary trickster Coyote and her crazy encounter with Columbus's "discovery" of America. Thomas King has found a hilarious way to poke fun at just about everything he can, from Columbus's mistake to our preoccupation with vacation vehicles. And the dazzlingly colorful illustrations add to the wild and wacky world of turtles, moose, Native Americans and, of course, Coyote, who's nose falls off everytime she laughs. A quick easy read, King's book deserves a spot near the best of Dr. Seuss.

Your patience will be rewarded...
...if you can get thru the first hour of names, acronyms & unfamiliar agencies. Then the story picks up. Much in this story of friendly espionage is known to historians. Thomas Mahl pulls it together, fills in & adds some sordid new items. I recommend it to those interested in the mechinations of the British in the United States before our entry into the war. Franklin Roosevelt was up to his neck in conspiracy with the British to discredit isolationist by any means, legal or not. The British moved covertly on a scale that FDR & his administration could not have conceived of on their own. The Office of Strategic Services, the prototype of today's CIA was created by the British. They also installed their own man, but an American, Bill Donovan at its head. A federal investigation was launched against leading isolationist Congressman Hamilton Fish. Mr. Mahl shows how the British engineered it. When testifying at the trial of a German national, British agents perjured themselves. He had in his possession a map describing the invasion of South America by Germany. It was forged by the British secret service & planted on him. Their perjured testimony convicted him. The British attacked Standard Oil of New Jersey for their dealings with I. G. Farben a German company. They were accused of creating a cartel to drive up oil prices. This critism was found to have come from inside the U.S. Public opinion polls were just starting to come into their own. British intelligience was able to publish polls that showed American support for entering the war on Britain's side. This actually was never true, until perhaps when Germany declared war on the U.S. Very little could have been accomplished without the complicity of an interventionist press. Those writers were numerous and well known including Walter Lippman, Dorothy Thompson & James Reston. Marshall Fields founded the Chicago Sun-Times to counter the editorials of the isolationist Chicago Tribune. The Chapter I found utterly fascinating was the author's claim that the British, with FDR's connivance, co-opted the Republican National Covention in 1940. They were able to install the dark-horse canidate, Wendell Wilkie, as the GOP nominee against FDR. The thing is, he supported the president's views on extending the draft one more year & Lend Lease. The Repubicans in Congress & the Senate opposed both of these measures. But it is pretty difficult to oppose your party's standard bearer. The British got Lend Lease which was their goal. Wilkie was so well thought of by FDR & the British that he was for a short time considered for the vice-presidency by the Democrats in 1944. What a disaster that could have been! The sordid stories of beautiful female agents compromising prominent Americans was also an interesting sidelight. Are these stories true? Undeniably some are. But they all add up to a entertaining book & a well read audio-tape.

Digital Places: Building Our City of Bits
Digital Places presented an ideas of an idealistic world, where 'computers' can be integrated into human's life. The Author proposed many interesting ideas of how our society (cities) can be 'connected' with a ever-changing technology. He also comments on human evolution to be 'connect' with the 'digital' world. This will require great length of dedication and effort from both the government and the private sector. Overall, this book reflect very interesting points where our society can be 'wired' and enhance our life. In the last chapter, the author also present a very intersting and helpful '7 Actions' to lead us to the new height in the 'digital world'. Maybe?, this is the genesis of our 'Brave New World'.

Great book - with great web support for additional info !!
This book was a required for a college course I was taking. The book covers all avenues of computing including applications (Excel, animation, etc) This is a great beginner's book with everything you need in one book. The book is littered with web links that expanses further on the subject matter that can't be covered in the book due to space. Lots of detail on glossy sheets in full color. The only problems is that there is variable text size from "ant size" to large text. Reads like a magazine with too much detail in some area (hence the 4 stars) This could be a text book of the future. This book was done in 1997 so some of the sites may no longer be supported. [URL] is their home site. I would buy it again if I had to. They have a new edition yearly.
