Lots of Great Information and Photos, Well Organized
All About Vines and Climbers by Ortho has much information on a variety of vines/climbers and is well organized and categorizes them in many ways--zone, type, color, fruits, fragrance, winter appearance, etc. Also offered is planting advice for plants, seeds, cuttings, and pruning advice and where to purchase vines, and different types of structures to grow vines on. Even mentioned are gourd vines!

In the past years, I started to add vines to a giant trellis (an old dilapidated greenhouse that I converted to a giant trellis) as a hobby and I find this book helpful because not all mailorder houses or nurseries carry the many different sorts of vines and so one is often not really sure of what is all available. I was familiar with the major ones, but now I know I can add some great new ones! It is a basic book, but it offers more information compared to a more comprehensive all around book that has a vines' section.

It is so far the best book on vines/climbers that I have read.

Compact and Straightforward
This book is great for the beginning vine grower. All of the most common vines are described in detail. Recommendations are given for various climates and growing schemes. I have practically worn my book out from using it so much. What a handy reference!

Passion for Peace: The Social Essays

Same War, Different "Enemies"
Never mind fighting terrorism and the Taliban. America's conflicting values put it at war with itself and make it seek scapegoats abroad. Merton speaks to us across two generations to show us how the hatred and evil in us spreads across oceans to infect those who become our enemies.

But Merton does not bash America or Americans. He provides a vital antidote to the disinformation that passes as news reports in our media, which are just as clueless as we are in understanding the whys and wherefores of our current crisis.

So do yourself a favor. Turn off the TV and the radio, set aside the newspapers and magazines, and read this book. You'll swear as I do that Merton could have written it yesterday. Substitute "terrorism" for "cold war" and "communism" while you're reading, and you'll see what I mean. There's still time for enlightenment and wisdom to triumph over ignorance and vanity if enough of us can learn to tell the difference.

Working for Social Justice
A great book that lists many essays of Merton during the 60's, including some that orignally appeared in the Catholic Worker Newspaper. Many on non-violence, others on important figures of that time. I especially enjoyed the piece on Malcolm X.

Very informative
I had a general idea about how dental implants work, but this book really educated me. If you're thinking about implants, this book will really help you understand what to expect. Easy to read and understand.

The only book you'll need to read on the subject
I have heard so much about dental implants in the past few years, with more people asking for them, and more dentists offering them. I have a crown that really should be replaced, and I wanted to get an implant. This seemed like the best book to read on the subject, based on the title, so I got a copy. It's everything the title says. Easy to understand, a quick read and a thorough explanation ... in language that I can understand. Thinking about implants? Read this book!

Sea Hawk of the Confederacy: Lt. Charles W. Read and the Confederate Navy

A terrific contribution to Civil War studies.
Excellent in-depth coverage for those who want more than the usual cursory overview. R. Thomas Campbell's Sea Hawk Of The Confederacy brings drama to the naval war, providing both a biography of Charles W. Read, a Confederate Navy officer whose battles were legendary, and a narrative style which reads like a novel while incorporating plenty of strategy and military facts.

A Long Overdue Tribute to an Exciting Confederate Navy Hero
Thomas Campbell's latest addition to his several other books on the Confederate Navy is the most exciting, as an 'old, mostly unknown' hero emerges to the spotlight he so well deserves. This first, complete biography of Lt. Charles W. Read, CSN, skillfully weaves various obscure sources of information, mostly unknown except to serious students of the Confederate Navy, to new family histories recently discovered. Many of the generous number of photographs have never been seen in public before. Read's participation on such ships as the CSS McRAE, ARKANSAS, FLORIDA AND WEBB are but a portion of the many thrilling experiences he originated and encountered. A brief history of each of the ships such as with Capt. Maffitt on the CSS FLORIDA fills the reader with anticipation of the next chase and adventure. Charles Read's overland escapades will surprise many students of the army to find they were done by navy personnel. In short, this book is a must for anyone who wants to learn of a true life adventurer and to ask themselves "why haven't we heard of him before?". Thomas Campbell is to be commended for this work. Fantastic book on Shakespeare
This winter break I went on a Shakespeare buying spree, and this book is one of the fine gems I found. A large, but fascinating book, this work of great scholarship and excitement takes the reader on a whirlwind tour of Shakespeare, even into rather obscure corners of his works (Trollius and Cressida, Timon of Athens). This book is a must read for any would be deep thinker about Shakespeare.

The New Shakespeareans
Shakespeare as Political Thinker is a must for everyone interested in the political thought of William Shakespeare. This reprint will finally allow new comers to become familair with a commonsensical approach to Shakespeare's plays. The introductory chapter by John Alvis is worth the price. Perhaps the best Shakespearean critic alive, Alvis has an uncanny ability to show Shakespeare's moral seriousness without making the bard an unquestioning adherent to any political school or theological creed. Many of the essays that follow are also well done: Jaffa's chapter on Shakespeare's entire corpus, Laurence Berns' meditation on Lear etc.

The second printing of Shakespeare as Political Thinker gives hope to those interested in relearning ancient wisdom and pays tribute to its inspiration, Shakespeare's Politics (Allan Bloom).

Excellent first-line reference
As a general medical transcription reference, "Stedman's Medical Speller" is an outstanding first-line choice. Distilled from the vast tome of the 26th edition Stedman's Dictionary, this has, according to the editor, 113,000 entries that not only include medical terms but also variant spellings, phrases, and some useful medical jargon. It is completely cross-referenced which is a godsend when one is trying to interpret that-all-too-frequent mumbling dictator. Excluded from this book are terms in pharmacology, pathology, biochemistry, veterinary and abbreviations.

It has several appendixes which include rules of hyphenation [admittedly not used much nowadays with word-wrap computer programs] and another on medical prefixes, suffixes and combining forms.

This 1996 Second Edition book is an excellent reference source. As a full-time medical transcriptionist, I have used it frequently and can vouch for its comprehensiveness.

A Must for any Medical Transcriptionist
I have used this book at work and am now purchasing it for home use. This is a must have book for any medical transcriptionist who cares about his or her work and its quality. If you purchase no other book, purchase this one!

A MUST HAVE IN EVERY CHRISTIAN'S LIBRARY!
This book is SIMPLY OUTSTANDING! My priest loaned me his copy for apologetic work- I was so impressed with it, I purchased a copy for myself. This book is an excellent guide for finding topics and issues in the bible as well as defending the Catholic Faith to the "bible thumpers." If you are looking to defend, or to better understand your faith- this book belongs in your home. It does not have commentary or editorials- just scripture passages. I encourage ALL Christians to purchase a copy of this book- it's clear, concise, and to the point.

Moreover, it not only covers theological issues, but social issues as well- if you have biblical questions about daily living- you'll find the answers in here.

Pax Domini sit semper vobiscum
(The peace of the Lord be always with you).

Review from the Publisher
848 pages, Paperbound, Imprimatur. Alphabetical, topic-by-topic selection of passages from the Douay-Rheims Bible, originally compiled to help priests prepare sermons. Over 1,900 topics and 18,000 Bible verses! Unlike other concordances, this one quotes the actual passages in full. A quick way to learn just what the Bible says on a host of topics. A great aid, belongs in every home!

Provides a companion to the plots
A Theatergoer's Guide To Shakespeare provides a companion to the plots, characters and themes of Shakespeare's plays, and will delight both beginning theater buffs and those studying Shakespeare. Fallon's treatment avoids the usual jargon and presents a clear picture of the play's events and characters, providing lively commentary on the plots and history. A recommended picks for a wide range of audiences, from students to drama fans.

Choose this Superb NOT "Dumbed-Down" Intro to Shakespeare!
In this fine introduction to Shakespeare, Prof. Robert Fallon had more sense than to try to "dumb down" Shakespeare. It can't be done--however, you CAN approach Shakespeare simply and cleanly, as the "Dummies" guides absolutely fail to do. The appropriate approach is to present the basics that are required to appreciate Shakespeare's plays, and that is exactly what Fallon has done in an enjoyable, highly readable text with no frills, distracting unfunny cartoons and trivia quizzes. To put my cards on the table, I worked in the recent past in a publishing company where I was not permitted to publish this excellent introductory guide myself, because it did not take a "for dummies" approach. I greatly regretted the stupidity of this decision (ever have a stupid boss?) and I salute Fallon for filling a need on the theater shelves of the bookstores. And bravo to his intelligent publisher Ivan R. Dee for putting out a well-designed volume. So take it from me, a theater lover for ages: This is the guide to choose if you want to begin to feel comfortable with Shakespeare or just want a solid guide to complement your experience of the plays.

This Way Madness Lies
Published in Paperback by Warner Books (1993)
Author: Thomas William Simpson
Amazon base price: $4.99
Used price: $1.50
Collectible price: $7.99
Average review score:

John Cheever meets Harold Robbins
An engaging look into the landed Protestant gentry of New Jersey horse country and their struggle to find meaning in the post-Vietnam era. The characters are lively and Simpson's writing style is reminiscent of John O'Hara at his early best. Understated melodrama and an eye for detail in the dissolving world of WASP culture make this novel a must read for anyone interested in the fading of America's humble aristocracy.

Reading this author is as if you're watching a movie!
Nobody in a long time has written so obviously with the reader in mind. Each character and scene creates an incredible sequence of events. Simpson is definitely unique as a storyteller. Highly recommended reading.
