Uncommon courage and wisdom about values
Many talk about values or "family values". I have never heard anyone speak so clearly and with such wisdom about values and the root of values. Don't read this book if you want to keep your current paradigm about life and what is important.

Henry VIII's Two Grand Viziers
This book was a very pleasant surprise. It's an ably written, and brief account of the two intertwined lives of the men who served Henry VIII prior to and during the Henrician Reformation. Williams argues that Thomas Cromwell was just as much Henry's "prime minister" as Cardinal Wolsey. The author seems to be more of an admirer of Cromwell than Wolsey, but he doesn't shut his eyes to either man's faults. Of especial interest to me, were Cromwell's correspondence with Wolsey, his loyalty after Wolsey's fall, and his stated wish that Luther had never been.

Necessary to grasp the Constitution
Every American lawyer ought to read Blackstone.

Not that the law he contains is still reliable, although much of it is. But for the big picture, the history of the development of the English common law, he remains an indispensible source.

The American founding fathers grew up with this stuff, and these four volumes were indispensible for a Colonial gentleman's education. In viewing them, you will gain a new understanding of the meaning of the Constitution of the United States. As Blackstone develops the law, he sets it against the backdrop of the British struggle against arbitrary rule by the King, the seventeenth century wars of religious fanaticism, and England's long battle to win free from the power of the papacy. To read Blackstone is to learn what the founding fathers thought and feared, and what they wrote the Constitution to guard against.

"A Heartfelt Toast For The Ones We Love"
A truly remarkable book! Once I picked it up, I couldn't put it down. Original, creative, heartfelt and sincere toasts. "Crisp Toasts" is the answer for "those of us" who don't know exactly what to say and when to say it. It gives you direct guidance on helping you find the "perfect" toast for the "perfect" couple. Sincere and meaningful examples are given, some serious and others funny, and insight as to which one is appropriate depending on the situation. I have recommended it to many friends and relatives. What a wonderful reference book to keep throughout the years.

An Enjoyable Excursion to the Wetlands of the Chesapeake Bay
I would recommend Days Afield to anyone interested in the natural environment, and especially students and educators studying the ecology of the Chesapeake Bay region. The text is easy to read and follow, and personalizes the author's scientific endeavors in the region, as an employee first of the Maryland Department of Natural Resources, then later the EPA, as an instructor for the USDA's Graduate School, and also as a concerned citizen and dedicated naturalist.

In Chapter 1, the author assumes the role of instructor, and takes the reader on a composite of one of his many overnight field trips down the Delmarva peninsula. The reader follows along as the trip begins in the freshwater marshes of the Choptank River in Maryland, moves on to Watts Creek in Delaware, then returns to the deciduous swamps of the Nanticoke River in Maryland. On day two, the trip moves to the marshes of Chincoteague in Virginia, onward to the Assateague impoundments and wash flats, and concludes with the dunes, beach, and ocean.

The remaining chapters detail the natural environment of freshwater, brackish, and salt marshes; the Pocomoke and Nanticoke Rivers; Delmarva potholes; and several Western Shore streams. The book also incorporates a fair amount of botanical exploits, some in the form of excerpts from the author's nature journals, which will be enjoyed by anyone with such interests.

The valuable scientific information contained in this book is conveyed in a reader-friendly manner. The language is very descriptive, enabling one to visualize while reading. The book also contains a number of personal anecdotes that make the text fun to read.

The many lists and tables throughout the text, as well as the comprehensive "Literature Cited" section and detailed indexes of plant and animal scientific and common names that appear at the end of the book should be especially useful to the scientific-minded and studious.

Funny tales on how Dog kind truly do run the world
William Thomas captures the true nature of the Dog/Man relationship. Most espically that relationship between a Border Collie and his human. These animals give unrestricted love and only ask that they be allowed to do anything they please.

And that comes across in this very funny book, it on many occasion made me laugh out loud; and I am sure many of the other guests in my hotel must of thought me insane.

But there is a warning, if like me you used to own a Border Collie (mine died at the age of 16 from a stroke) and have managed to keep the age old promise of the pet owner of never again, then at the end of the book (or even during) you may well be reduced to tears as you reminded of the antics of own beloved and now departed best friend.

A Fascinating Story of Man's Fascination with the Moon
The authors are to be commended on weaving together the lives and observations of three centuries of those people who dedicated great amounts of time and effort into studying our nearest celestial neighbor with the telescope. Interesting. exciting and unique is how I would sum up the telling of this facet of the history of Astronomy. Beginning with Galileo's first telescopic observations and culminating with Man's arrival on the moon this book tells it all. I was most impressed with the incredible amount of work that went into the mapping of the moon in ever increasing detail as telescopes became better and better. Enjoying the sketching of lunar formations at the eyepiece myself I can appreciate the size of the task of drawing the entire visible face of the moon as seen through a telescope. Yet this was done on several different levels of perfection by a very few observers and was the only record available before the invention of lunar photography came along. Not only is this a great history of lunar observation, but also tells the story of the history of the telescope. The wealth of pictures of the early telescopes is a delight in itself and adds a great deal to the text. I would most certainly recommed this book to anyone interested in the moon, or the history of astronomy. A well done to the authors. One of the authors is a psychiatrist and I assume it was his input which resulted in the emotions and thought processes of the characters in the book seeping out between the lines and made the book all the more enjoyable. It was also obvious that both authors are observers themselves.
