It was pretty good
This book is clearly a political move made by Huey Long when he was aiming for the presidency. I found it interesting to discover about his life, and how he tried to show that he was just like everybody else.

Great book for High School Students
I bought this book to tutor one of my kids with. I was there to help explain the concepts, but the book did most of that. We needed a lot of problems to work out and they were right in the book too. This is a great book to teach high school students with.

Master of Atmosphere
The watercolors of JMW Turner have the concise, simplified vision of contemporary art even though they were painted in the mid 1800's. This survey shows the progression of this master of light and delicate color from tightly delineated landscapes to the atmospheric , nearly abstract vistas of his late career. The reproductions are supported by quotes selected from writings contemporary to the paintings. This book provides an inspirational overview of the work of Turner and belongs in the library of the serious watercolor artist.

JWR Review
Whether or not you agree with the premise that the poem "The Flying Islands of the Night" reveals the multi-faceted personality of the poet, you will find that this book is valuable resource for one getting to know more about Riley and his times. It certainly is not as scholarly or as thorough as the even more recent biography of Riley by Elizabeth J. Van Allen, but it contains a lot of anecdotes about Riley and his friends.

Knocking off Jefferson's halo
Jefferson is often praised for his writings on personal freedom, democracy, and civil liberties. This book exposes the complexity of Jefferson. In other words, he did not really practice what he preached. He was a champion of civil liberties on paper, but not in practice.

As President of the United States, he showed a disturbing disregard for basic civil liberties. He showed reckless disregard for the 4th amendment ban on unreasonable search and seizure, and he was no friend of the first amendment and a free press when he was attacked by oppostion newspapers.

Those who worship Jefferson will find this book disturbing. Some will even call it a hatchet job. I disagree. Although Levy does attack Jefferson on civil liberties, he praises Jefferson's strong stand on separation of church and state.

Although Levy is a professional historian, this book should appeal to non-academics. It is a quick read and it makes a strong (and controversial) point without going into mind numbing detail. It is nice to read some history with an edge.

Finally, we can admire the principles that Jefferson stood for while acknowledging that he was far from perfect. I think that is the broader point of this book.

Help found in prayer ...
I found this book looking for a personal way to participate in the Roman Catholic Liturgy begun with attendance of the Sunday's Eucharist. It is a condensed easily accessed Office similarily patterned to that found in "The Book of Common Praayer" though identified as being in the Catholic tradition.

It's Office is organized around a seven day calendar, including both morning and evening prayer and a common night prayer, with additions for special times of the church year, ie. Advent, Easter, Lent, Pentecost. This Office is ordered in such a way that it could easily be used in a communal setting. Also it contains prayers for times of special need from authors such as Thomas Merton and Lucien Deiss.

This is not a how-to-book but fills the need for those of us who are looking for a companion along the journey of private prayer.

True Detective Stories
The 240 pages in this very readable book cover the highlights in the career of Detective First Grade McKenna and his thirty years in the NYPD. He shares his thoughts while discussing many of his interesting cases. The book reads like a TV series waiting to happen. The 14 chapters tell of the events behind the newspaper stories.

Chapter 1 tells of the Central Park Jogger attacked in April 1989. Page 9 tells that if a suspect denies being at the scene of the crime, he has something to hide. Perhaps there's another reason for not getting involved? Detective McKenna got a confession that resulted in a conviction. But in 2003 the DNA evidence caused their release from jail, and exoneration. "There was no physical evidence". Is there a lesson to be learned? Should anyone be convicted on a disputed confession when there is no other evidence? But it happens.

When crimes occur, Detectives show up after to gather the statements of eyewitnesses, and begin their investigation. Sometimes they get information from people who were not there. After spending hours and days the facts emerge to point to the suspects. They are tracked down, arrested, then convicted. Detective McKenna emphasizes that "police work is all teamwork". Many of the crimes just happen by opportunity; there are few masterminds in street crime. One exception is on page 40. After you read this book you can turn to the classic Hammett and Chandler short stories with a new viewpoint.

Mohawk Baronet: A Biography of Sir William Johnson

Biography of a little known, but important historical person
Sir William Johnson was a loyal subject of the British crown. Yet his contribution to what is now the United States of America is little known or appreciated as it ought to be, most likely because he was a loyalist. Without his contribution to the British victory over France in North America, the United States simply would not exist. Flexner provides us with a biography of this man that avoids the pitfalls of some of the exagerated Johnson legends by careful historical research.

From the complicated family life of a man who never married his children's mothers, to his intricate involvement and dealings with the Iroquis Confederacy that held that Confederacy to the British side, Flexner presents a fascinating story of a side of American history many Americans are probably not aware of. You can not fully understand and appreciate American history without knowing about Sir William Johnson.
