I must say that this book comes a VERY close second to the Peter Gay series in terms of content and style. David Stafford-Clark has spent years studying Freud, and it truly shows in this amazing masterpiece. Staying away from a purely biographical text, Stafford-Clark is able to pull information from Freud's books, letters, studies, and stories to weave together a highly informative piece that anyone could take something away from. I highly recommend it to anyone who has ever had any interest in Freud, and especially to those who have always criticized him without ever reading him.

I teach math in a GED program for adults returning to school to finish their high school educations. I came across Where Do I Put... when I was looking for books to help students with paralyzing math anxiety. Of all the books I found on this subject in the library, this was by far the most user friendly and practical. Since then, I found a used copy that I have shared with many students and colleagues. One of them who calls this book "her Bible," gives it full credit for raising her GED math score by 25% and helping her to pass the test with flying colors. My only regret is that this book is out of print. I hope that the publisher (Avon Books) does something about that soon.

Published back in 1968, this was the very first of five Wombles novels written by Elisabeth Beresford. It's a well crafted, witty, and endearing work, intended for the older reader (8-11) and establishes the Wombles as the inventive, cunning and ecologically minded creatures that have charmed the hearts of millions. The TV series that followed watered down some of the detail and narrative in this book to suit the attention span and comprehension of younger viewers, but this is the Wombles as they were originally conceived. In fact, if all you have known of the Wombles is their TV series and short story picture books, then you are in for a bit of a surprise as you will find them to be far more sophisticated and inspired characters than one would gather from the TV series. In addition, without belabouring the point too strongly, Elisabeth Beresford manages to call attention to the wastefulness and alienation of human society, contrasting it against the resourcefulness and camaraderie of the Wombles. This was one of the very first childrens' books to introduce ecological concerns into its narrative and it succeeds without being "preachy". Come to think of it, the Womble maxim of "making good use of bad rubbish" has never been more appropriate or timely than for our own society...

The author, a doctorate in theology who writes and teaches in Tubingen, provides insight into the author of each Gospel as well as places women into a cultural context in their relationship to Jesus. This contextual view of Jesus and his relationships to women opned my eyes to the depths of his loving and tender nature. Its is women who give us the story of the crucifixion and resurrection. Reading this book along with Margaret Hebblethwaite's Six New Gospels moved me to tears. I have been a life long student of church history and theology. Where was this Jesus and these women when I went to Sunday School and sat faithfully through more than half a century of sermons? Its like eating canned peas and carrots and thinking you have tasted vegetables, then eating of the harvest in a California vegetarian restaurant! After the delight of the fresh harvest from asparagus and artichoke to zucchini, the question is--who would be willing to return to the canned peas and carrots, only?

I purchased a copy of this book at the local library sale. I found Jennie and Alick great characters, and wondered at their circumstances. It is a great story of love, mystery and people coming to a new country. The pride of becoming Americans and their children born on American soil. Glad to know that there is more to this story than just the one book
