Very resourceful book!
I used this book as a source for my term paper which was on shakespeare. I wanted to get essays written by people during the time the plays were performed. This was a great book with lots of essays written by people from all different centuries since the plays have been published. It was an easy book to use...just like a dictionary. All you basically need to find out if the volume number which you can find out quite easily. It was a great book to use and from now on it's the first one I think about using.

A true work of real genius!
"From its modest beginnings as... a minor, infrequent almost inconsequential participant in the great wars that ravaged sixteenth- and seventeenth-century Europe... Britain emerged in the late seventeenth and early eighteenth centuries as the military Wunderkind of the age.... [B]y the reign of George III Britain had become one of the heaviest weights in the balance of power in Europe [and]... was on the threshold of becoming a transcontinental power..."

The above quote is the opening of War, Money, and the English State. There have been many histories of Britain's military successes in the century after the expulsion of James II Stuart--biographies of the first Duke of Marlborough, histories of the British navy, narratives of the Seven Years' War, and so forth. There have been many histories of Britain's economic growth--and even attempts to explain why Britain saw such mercantile and then industrial success in the eighteenth century. But the connection? John Brewer takes on the task of filling in the gap: how was Britain's economic success translated into massive military power?

This question is especially interesting because Britain appeared to successfully mobilize its resources for eighteenth century wars in a manner very different from the continental "absolutist" powers. The apparatuses of royal secret police, lits de justice, the co-option of the middle nobility in the centralization of power and authority, and the ideology of a king "freed from the duty of observing the laws" are in large part absent from British military mobilization. It followed a different pattern--one that may have had decisive consequences for human history...

John Brewer handles his topic superbly, making The Sinews of Power one of the best books I read in 1991, and making it one of the best books I read in 1995, when I re-read it.

Six Perfectly Different Pigs

excellent storyline, illustration,my boys 4-10 really laughed
Six Perfect Pigs beautifully illustrated with an excellent story and moral, well though out brilliant names and very funny from start to finish. It really tickled my boys' funnybones while getting across the message that we are all different, but thats what makes us all special. If you have a child in your family or class who is different, may have a birthmark or is less able (As in my family), this can help to show them and their peers that "different" doesn't have to be negative because we are all "perfectly different" in our own way. My children wanted me to read it again and again, so will yours.

The BEST Lamaze handbook out there!
There are so many great things about this book! It is concise and to the point. Unlike other birthing books that spend hundreds of pages focusing on all the obscure complications that could occur during childbirth, "Six Practical Lessons" discusses what happens during a more common healthy birth. This makes it easier to understand and more helpful.

My husband and I had the privilege of taking Lamaze classes with Elisabeth Bing, and we found this book to be a great supplement for her classes. She is one of the pioneers of the Lamaze method here in the United States and a co-founder of Lamaze International.

"Six Practical Lessons" explains what exactly happens during labor, demonstrates exercises for you and your partner to prepare for labor, and goes over relaxation and breathing techniques. It also contains helpful illustrations and photographs.

Also, by going over the history of Lamaze it helps explain and understand why this method works so well.

the amazing life of a spice
The spice of life is a simply amazing book. The history of some of the spices mentioned in the book is superbly explained. It first caught my attention on a tv series some 20 years back and has since then left an enourmous impact in my kithchen. There is not once that when a topic comes about cooking that I do not mention the amazing chicken cooked in forty cloves of garlic or the other wonderful authentic recipes. The authors have done great justice to the book and could not have given it a better name than "The spice of life".

The Spiral of Silence: Public Opinion - Our Social Skin
Published in Paperback by University of Chicago Press (1993)
Author: Elisabeth Noelle-Neumann
Amazon base price: $16.00
Used price: $6.50
Average review score:

Public Opinion As Social Control
The spiral of silence is based on the model of public opinion as social control. The spiral of silence holds that social systems form consensus by threatening individuals with social isolation. Individuals scan their environment for present and future distributions of public opinion in order to see which have social approval and which lead to isolation. In other words, public opinion is nothing more than safe responses to controversial issues that are expressed in order to protect oneself from social rejection.

Elisabeth Noelle-Neumann's spiral of silence theory in essence posits that an individual's willingness to express his or her opinion is a function of how he or she perceives public opinion. The spiral of silence theory is very influential in that it has produced as much research and probably more controversy than any other recent theory in the communication and public opinion fields. Furthermore, most of those that support the theory and those that are critical of it agree that the theory is important because it is one of the first to link public opinion to the social context in which opinion evolves and because it presents an interdisciplinary approach for understanding public opinion dynamics.

Spoken Cantonese, Book I/Book and 15 Audio Cassettes

Really useful course
I'm an avid language learner and as such have used many different
courses and techniques. This course is really good. The cassette drills are very effective. If you use them, don't get intimidated by the speed. The first run through them is difficult. It gets easier after that. I've found it to be very effective to first go through a chapter, learn the words which are new to you and then do the tapes. I do the tapes for each chapter 3 times. e.g. do ch 1, then 2, then 1, then 2, then 3, then 2, then 3, then 4, etc. And review as necesary.
I went ahead and bought the course II as well and I'm going to go
back and get the Mandarin course for review as well.
