An EXCELLENT guide for first or second year grad students!
I would highly recommend this book for ANYONE planning to pursue a graduate degree in the sciences. Those early in their graduate career will also find it helpful. Dr. Smith covers several topics from the qualities of a good researcher, choosing the right school, choosing a thesis advisor, as well as scientific ethics and scientific writing. I have found this book very useful. I just wish I would have had it when I was a junior or senior in college!

KANSAS-A FORGOTTEN STATE OF MIND...
Few Americans now living can recall the impact and import of the "view from Kansas" from the mid 1800's up to the Great Depression. Modern Americans know little of the Sunflower State other than that the residents there are reasonably quiet and keep pretty much to themselves. It might be hard to imagine that at one time to say one was from Kansas would be the equivalent of saying "I'm a Texan," nowadays.

Kansan's were (and are) noted for their hard work, common sense pioneer spirit and an inate sense of fair play. Bader's book takes us step by step through the state's stormy start, as "Bleeding Kansas," and its major role in the War Between the States, through its phase as a policy maker and trend-setter up to modern times when Kansas is perhaps best known as the home state of former U. S. Senator, Bob Dole.

Surprisingly engaging and ultimately very "readable," this book is a must-read for anyone with a bent for Americana and U. S. history.

A great short story anthology
This short story collection centers on the impact of separations and divorce on the participants including extended family members. However, the twenty tales share a dark look at IRRECONCILABLE DIFFERENCES as the audience is treated to situations that do not end as peacefully as our current legal system expects.

Lia Matera has put together a remarkable anthology that has several excellent stories, some very good tales, and no poor entry. The cross-genre contributors are a modern day who's who with such noted authors like Oates, Cross, Deaver, Lutz, Buchanan, and Muller, etc. None of the writers are lightweights as they all hold their own with the heavyweights. Anyone who enjoyed the Battle of the Roses will fully relish each tale that paints a very dismal look at broken relationships.

You'll learn how to hold on and how to let go
It's incredibly unfair losing someone you thought would be there forever even when you know that forever has a time limit. What makes 'Jane's House' so good is that it shows all the struggles. Life still has to be lived when you're hurting. Laundry still has to be done and dinner still has to be made, and people fall in love even as they grieve for the one who went away. Kimmel shows the struggle each family member faces as they go on with their lives and shows how the 'new' wife has to struggle with the one who has departed even though they've never met. The inevitable comparisons - both good and bad, and the guilt that goes with comparing. You'll laugh, and cry, and swear at every central character as they all go through the tunnel and come out triumpant on the other side

Restful Reflections
We live in a rush-rush world filled with a myriad of activities that demand our time and challenge our priorities. More and more people are talking about balance, life-work balance. A theologian and a corporate executive (a nice balance in itself) got together and wrote a little book that may bring you some serenity and perspective.

Life is Not Work is one of those little books you often see next to the cash register in book stores or gift shops. An impulse buy. Except this one is more expensive ... It offers more than just little quotations, though. The little essays, personal stories, make this book a cross between a quote book and a Chicken Soup for the Soul volume.

The authors bring us 137 of these short, easy-to-read essays, organized into twenty categories. Listing the categories will give you a sense of the content you'll discover: Balance, Time, Work, Living, Play, Spirituality, Wholeness, Empowerment, Strength, Joy, Stress, Materialism, Repose, Wonder, Nurture, Happiness, Authenticity, Integrity, Community, and Fulfillment. Have I whetted your appetite? Consider the background and perspective of the authors and slide into your easy chair to think about the balance in your life. Forewords from the authors will help you understand who they are and where they're "coming from." A bibliography completes the book, giving the reader an extra sense of connection to the messages and their sources.

This book will rest comfortably, waiting for its next opportunity, next to the bed in our family's guest room.

Be my guest. Read this book gently and contemplate your life-work balance.
