Nice Crumb Overview
For those new to the work of R. Crumb or those who want a compilation of "women" drawings this is a nice book. Great productions values: the cover, endpapers, binding, paper stock are all first class. The reason I didn't give this 5 stars is because there is very little work from recent years. I counted 6 drawings from 2002, 5 drawings from 2001, and only 2 from 2000. (There are no drawings from 2003). Most of the material is from the 1980's. I would have liked a more even sampling of material throughout the years and would have really been interested to see what new and recent work (if any) he's been doing on the subject of women. If you have the Crumb german sketchbooks, or are collecting the Fantagraphics sketchbooks then there's really no need for this. This is a good "general interest" Crumb collection.

Nice and Simple Central Arizona Compendium
This is a nice collection of 70 hikes in the central arizona area, for Sedona, Prescott, the Bradshaw mountains, Sierra Prieta, Juniper Mesa, Mingus Mountain, and Grantite Mountain areas. The presentation is simple and direct. Each hike has a road-to-trailhead map and description as well as a trail map and trail description. Each also has an interesting altitude profile diagram. B&W photos are included for many hikes. Also includes latitude and longitude for tailheads so you can feed it into a GPS. If you are planning some hiking time in the Prescott, Verde Valley, or Sedona area, this is a good book to have.

In Line Skating (Extreme Sports)
Published in Paperback by Barrons Juveniles (1999)
Authors: Ben Roberts, Tim Rainger, and Ian Smith
Amazon base price: $6.95
Average review score:

It simplifies aggressive skating
It breaks down aggressive skating for younger readers so they can understand it. It gives good information about some tricks that are done in skating but there is not too much to the book. There should be even more information then they give. They emphisize safty and rules at skate parks. They explain the use of pads and helmets. It is a book for beginners who do not know much about aggressive skating. Overall I would say it was a quick and easy read that gave a moderate amount of information.

Good guys 1 -- Outlaws 0
Although a title like "The Last Hurrah of the James-Younger Gang" is good from a marketing standpoint because of the "celebrity" status of Jesse James and Cole Younger, it unfortunately does not recognize the real heroes of Robert Barr Smith's book: the ordinary citizens of a small Midwestern town who in 1876 repelled an invasion by a criminal gang. Smith makes no secret of his sympathies (which I share) when he describes the outlaws as being "no more than orinary criminals, bullies who stole the fruits of other's labors because it beat working and did a good deal to inflate their twisted egos." In other words, don't buy this book if you expect to read praise of Jesse James!

Smith's research into the Northfield, Minnesota, raid is broad, but the nature of the evidence prevents him from constructing a simple narrative with all details laid out in a straightforward, no questions manner. Quick, violent events such as the Northfield gun battle inevitably leave witnesses confused and contradictions are inescapable. Moreover, the outlaws' own accounts appear more concerned with providing excuses and whitewashing their activities than relating the truth. And, finally, the stories from both sides were very often exagerrated and distorted by the newspapers and books which reported them.

Time and time again, Smith relates several different versions of some particular incident, pointing out improbabilities and sometimes identifying the most likely truth, but very often only a best guess at what really happended can be made. Nonetheless, Smith's reconstruction of events held my attention and, in the end, I celebrate with him the victory of those Minnesota farmers and shopkeepers over the hoodlums who thought they would be easy picking.

Observational Astrophysics
Published in Hardcover by Cambridge University Press (1995)
Author: Robert C. Smith
Amazon base price: $90.00
Average review score:

A little something for everyone
Very broad in its scope with enough depth to deal with the fundamentals while pointing the reader in the right direction for a more detailed treatment of the subject matter. Could be used as a text or reference book, or simply read as I chose, to broaden ones knowledge. Contains a good overview of the tools and techniques of radio astronomy. A fair bit of math employed, but not overwhelming to the educated reader. Reading level is geared toward a 3rd or 4th year undergrad in physics/astronomy but would also be useful as a primer for graduate level students or the serious amateur. Good book at a good price!

People of the Covenant 3e
Published in Hardcover by Oxford University Press (1997)
Authors: Henry J. Flanders, David A. Smith, and Robert W. Crapps
Amazon base price: $24.95
Average review score:

Excellent content but many proofreading errors
This introductory textbook gives a balanced (neither overly conservative nor overly liberal) introduction to all of the classical interpretive questions. Unfortunately, many proofreading errors found in the previous edition have not been corrected in this edition. Some of these errors are substantive, such as putting all of the prophetic books under the heading "former prophets" on p.18 and putting Jerusalem instead of Samaria as the city conquered by the Assyrians in 722 (in the glossary under "transcolonization"). However, an alert teacher can compensate for these types of flaws in an otherwise very competent presentation of the contents and interpretative issues of Hebrew Bible.

Placing Ourselves Among the Living

Intelligent short-short fiction
These eight stories, all previously published in literary journals, offer maximum impact with a minimum of words. Smith's stories take tiny snippets of time and transform them into universal and compelling tales. A nice read for any fan of the short-short genre.

A Good Introduction to Pruning
Although this book doesn't cover the most sophisticated aspects of pruning in detail (like grafting), it will give you a firm grasp of the basics, including when to prune, and how to do it. Various general types of trees are treated, like conifers, deciduous trees, fruits, bushes, etc. Simple yet attractive line drawings fill the book and are very helpful.
