Exactly what I was looking for
This book pulls no punches in explaining the rise of Nazism, exploring German history in a compelling way. This author has no axes to grind. This is must reading for anyone who wants to understand the way Adolf Hitler and National Socialism came to power. You know the old saying -- about those who don't understand history being doomed to repeat it.

Wonderfully written look at history
Dr. Thompson, one of my former Professors at the Uni of SC (GO GAMECOCKS!) has taken an incredibly complex subject and explained it in an entertaining and insightful manner. Exactly like his classes! The question many ponder is answered in these pages, how did an group of people, the German intelligencia, fall for Hitler? By tracking the political history from before the First World War, we can see how these people desperately needed a powerful and charismatic leader, who could restore Germany's pride in themselves. No rumor mongering here, just plain facts!

Essential Adam Smith

Condensed Capitalism
To understand capitalism, read the Wealth of Nations. But, to really understand it, as well as the other ideas of Adam Smith, read his essential works. This book allows the reader to fully grasp the concepts of capitalism and get a clear picture of how and why it works. Thankfully, Heilbronner did not dilute the works of Smith, he just condensed them for the modern day reader. With this book you can cut through the jargon and see the real points that Smith was trying to get across.

A Great Introduction to Adam Smith's Ideas
After reading Heilbroner's The Worldly Philosophers, I decided to read Smith's Wealth of Nations, but found myself daunted by the length and language of the book. Then I discovered Heilbroner's Essential Adam Smith and was hooked. The book offers the essential parts of Wealth of Nations, as well as a good sampling of some of his other works. As a result, I have not only read the entire Wealth several times, but have also read everything by and about Smith that I can find. Heilbroner's book is a good way to get to the heart of Smith's thinking, but, like me, you will probably find yourself wanting to learn more about the man, his ideas, and his life. Enjoy!

Exposed: A Beautiful Book Reveals a Controvesial Subject
Exposed: A beautiful and Informative Book about a Controversial Topic

What surprised and delighted me most, by both the exhibition at the Brooklyn Museum, and by this wonderful text that accompanied the show and is now available to purchase, is the unbiased historical approach to the theme of Victorian Nudes and Sexuality. Most museums and texts that dare to present 19th century Victorian and academically rendered art (art in the realist tradition taught by the academic art schools of the period) have accompanying text that is tongue-in-cheek or satirically critical of this artwork. But this book, as the exhibition (which was organized and sponsored by the Tate Britain museum in England) gives serious insight into the Victorian controversy of nudity and sexuality. "Exposed: The Victorian Nude" explains with respect, what the artists of that era were trying to do. It analyses the social climate of the time, the innovative and daring works of the period's masters, as well as lesser artists, and shows the influence this art had on popular trends and views. The book is also rich in color plates and is a visual delight as well as a wealth of historical knowledge. There are fine examples of paintings by Frederic Leighton, Sir Lawrence Alma-Tadema, Dante Gabriel Rossetti, Edward Coley Burne-Jones, Evelyn De Morgan, Herbert Draper, Anna Lea Merritt, Annie Swynnnerton, John William Waterhouse, Philip Hermogenes Calderon, Edward John Poynter, Albert Moore, George Frederic Watts and Earnest Normand. There are also fabulous drawings by William Mulready, William Holman Hunt, Ford Madox Brown, and John Everett Millais as well as photos of great sculpture of the period. This impressive book would make a wonderful holiday gift for anyone interested in the Victorian Era. If you are interested in my complete review of this book and show, with many examples of the colored plates from the book and descriptions of the paintings, you make find the review at www.artrenewal.org This site, The Art Renewal Center, is the largest on-line museum on the Internet and is a non-profit art educational organization. The review may be found in the top menu under Articles/latest articles/ "Exposed: The Victorian Nude" by Sherry Lazarus Ross.

Concentrates on painting, sculpture and drawing
Alison Smith deftly edits Exposed: The Victorian Nude, a photographic exploration of the range of Victorian representations of both male and female figures. This concentrates on painting, sculpture and drawing, but also explores photos, popular illustration and film. An excellent history.

Two volumes!
The proceedings really have 1876 pages, but they are divided into two volumes. The first volume has 944 pages, the remaining pages are in the second volume. Make sure you get the two volumes!

magnificent and fascinating
"The 1999 Genetic and Evolutionary Computation Conference (GECCO-99) combines the longest running conference in evolutionary computation (ICGA) and the world's two largest EC conferences (GP and ICGA) to create a unique opportunity to bring together the best in research in the growing field of genetic and evolutionary computation (GEC).

"The GECCO conference continues the tradition of the GP and ICGA conferences of bringing together researchers from the entire spectrum of research in evolutionary computation, including genetic algorithms, classifier systems, genetic programming, evolvable hardware, DNA and molecular computing, evolutionary strategies, evolutionary programming, artificial life, adaptive behavior, agents, as well as real-world applications of all of these areas." - from the publisher.

The relentless high quality of the many papers in this book make it delightful and thought-provoking. (My copy is 944 pages - not "1876" as Amozon has it.)

Hsing-I: Chinese Mind-Body Boxing

A True Classic
I totally agree with Carlos this is a true classic and its highly unfortunate its out of print. The other book by Robert W Smith & Alan Pittman does not bear comparision unfortunatley this one always seems available while the true classic is out of print. A whackey world or what ???? .I would love to get may hands on a copy

In the tradition of "Chinese Boxing: Masters And Methods"...
This text is a true classic!! ...A must read for Hsing-I Ch'uan (Xingyi Quan) stylists and internal martial arts enthusiasts everywhere. The author, Robert W. Smith, was the first person to really convey the depth and tradition of internal kung fu in this country. Many of his experiences studying in Taiwan in the sixties and early seventies have been written about in his books. He personally met many famous masters that many only read about. Amoung them are: Sun, Lu-Tang; Wang, Shu-Chin; Hung, I-Hsiang; Ch'ang, Shih-Jung; Cheng,Man-Ch'ing and many more!

It's truely a shame that this fine book is out of print. I read it several times in high school (a copy of the book was owned by my sifu) but always wanted to have a copy of it for myself. I've tried and tried to find a copy to buy but haven't had any luck with it. :( There is also a problem with people misassociated this book with the recently published Hsing- I book written by Robert W. Smith and Allen Pittman. For all Smith fans out there; this is NOT the same book! No offense to his more recent work though.

This book offers much more in the way of sharing the personal experiences of highly developed masters of the art. Of particular interest to me was the experiences of Sun, Lu-Tang's alchemical transmutations while practicing the more refined and esoteric aspects of Hsing-I. The stories about the lives of these masters were also fascinating. It is inspiring to read about the authentic experiences of individuals who reached extremely high levels of attainment in their Kung Fu. Another point in the books favor are the many decent black and white photographs of true masters practicing their art! They are holding various postures and displaying the proper bodily alignment for many of the movements in Hsing -I. The pictures alone are worth the price of the book!

This book was, obviously, very influential to me. It would be a joy to read again and I sincerely hope that it gets republished or that I may find a copy of it somewhere.

The Iron Man

The personalized history of the greatest generation.
Glenn Davis' lifetime encompassed the defining events of the century: Depression, WW II, Vietnam, and Watergate. His biography is like a Greek tragedy. He rises from a poor rural background through brains, work, and personality. He succeeds in Depression, faces terror in the naval war in the Pacific, enters the Congress after the war, rises near the summit with Nixon and Ford, and falls with the disgust of Vietnam and Watergate. For those with an interest in history, politics, and humanity, this biography is an enjoyable thought provoker.

An exciting book about a congressman from Wisconsins life.
I could not put this book down. It went from his birth all the way to his death. A very detailed account of his time on congress and in world war two.

The Lost Memoirs of Edgar Cayce: Life As a Seer

Edgar Cayce--the human being behind the psychic
This is a wonderful autobiography pieced together from Cayce's own writing over the years. A. Robert Smith, who compiled and edited the material, has done an excellent job of assembling and organizing the diverse materials from the Cayce files.

It is a book that should be read by everyone, especially those who have heard of Edgar Cayce but are unfamiliar with the man and his work. He gave thousands of psychic readings for others--but did not operate a psychic "hotline" and never charged anyone for a reading. His is a story of faith in action.

Beautiful!
I have been reading about Edgar Cayce for years, but this is the only book that has allowed me a very personal view of the Sleeping Prophet. It allows deeper insights into the man himself, from his own point of view. The book documents the troubles he overcame to become one of the world's most loved prophets.

Excellent resource, thought-provoking
This is another in the series of books edited by the Koegel team and associates. As always, excellent information provided in an easily read style. As in all ABA, there are data-based decisions to make.

Comprehensive guide covering a wide variety of situations
The title of this book does not convey the breadth of topics covered relevant to children of many different ages, the complete description and explanation of a wide variety of behavioral interventions along with expected results. Also good list of other sources of scholarly articles. One slight critique would be that a greater use of footnotes might have made the text a bit more user friendly.
