Contextual view of African American leadership
Today, despite the progress that has been made since the Civil Rights Act, systemic, and often unconscious discrimination persists against African Americans. Why is this the case? I believe Walters and Smith would argue that presently Americans are lack the ability to analyze society in political, economic, and structural terms. The result is that we, as a society, and African Americans, as a minority, are blind to the very obstacles that must be overcome. The value of "African American Leadership" lies in its ability to situate the discussion of African American leadership in the midst of a social, political, and historical exegesis. The weakness of the book rest with its deficiency in theoretical and methodological approaches, as well as its lack of attention to how other societal inequalities besides race (socioeconomic stratification, for instance) should be part of the discussion. Walters and Smith, take on the challenge of educating their audience about the social and historical forces that influence "Negro" and later "Black" leaders' effectiveness throughout history and even today. Towards this end, I feel "African American Leadership" has met the challenge. The contemporary pioneers of the movement towards social equity must build on and learn from Walters' and Smith's discussion.

Digging for the facts
Marion Smith has a wealth of information here, but her organization is weak and she repeats herself. Is this a collection of individual articles? This book isn't for the casual reader; he/she needs patience and digging skills. As it's out of print, it's also very expensive (not Marion Smith's fault). Still, anyone interested in the Shaw family will find here, what with Shaws, Lowells, and other collaterals, a geneological history of New England, together with material on Robert Gould Shaw not found elsewhere.

It brought back Memories.
First it started with simple Balsa wood flyers, then they got better as the designs got more complex. Most were flyable, some nose dived as soon as they were let go. With an adjustment or two - it would fly. I spent many hours winding the prop again and again to see what would happen next. With another adjustment, another flight pattern would take place. No two flights were the same. With a better or stronger rubber-band flights would get longer.

A different approach
Altough this is the first time I have a calculus course, I have seen a pretty fair amount of textbooks in my life. This edition of the book, is very innovative; it uses a clear layout of concepts, rules and laws, that are easy to access when reviewing the text. The exersises are a bit simple, but in the long run useful. An interesting aspect of this book is that it's very "up-to-date" with a lot of things, and it makes use of technology for the advantage of the student.

A great gift for the Urology resident
This book is a must for every fledgling urologist. Excellent update from the last edition, though a little long coming to press. A little light in the medication section, but excellent in the surgical section. Includes all the little things that you need to consider when things don't go exactly as planned with many good references. This would be the ideal book to give to any urology resident about to venture out on their own.

One that needs to come back INTO publication
Dick Smith's book is an excellent primer for amateur, aspiring f/x make-up artists and a handy guide for those who are experienced. His techniques are simple, inexpensive and timeless yet with the knowledge Mr. Smith provides you can achieve excellent results. This book really needs to come back into print! From simple highlighting and shading to making your own stage blood, this is a must-have guide to keep with your f/x makeup case. I would recommend anyone interested in learning f/x makeup to try to locate a copy of this excellent manual.

An Improtant Book
This book is a collection of four lectures delivered at Northwestern Univeristy in 1977. It takes four different approaches to the Holocaust: The Holocaust as literay inspirartion, as history, as living memory, and as a problem in moral choice. Elie Wiesel's lecture, like his novels, is very poetic and gripping--however, he doesn't really say very much, instead, he asks a great many "why" questions--which is perhaps all anyone can do. The lectures of Lucy Dawidowicz and Dorothy Rabinowitz are interesting in that they reveal the depth and breadth of the historical and personal record of the Holocaust as well as the extreme importance to the Jews of recording and remembering. Robert McAfee Brown confronts the difficult issue of potential Christian complicity in the Holocaust and the great question of theodicy--how can we believe in God after the Holocaust? He also provides some good analysis of Elie Wiesel's novels, which he sees as a pilgramage.

A Must for Fishing Delaware Valley
This is one of the best location guides for fishing I have ever read. They list the Tackle shop and resturants for the fisherman, plus things for the rest of the family to do, to make a fishers trip a family vacation. If you are going to fish the Delaware valley this book is a must.

Enormously fun book.
I read The Giant as a child and I loved it again when I reread it 20 years later. The main character is an author of travel books for children. The story builds up a good suspense as he gradually discovers that an enormous boy has secretly moved into a mysterious building next to his hotel in France. The boy is about 8 stories tall and about 9 years old, and he befriends the main character. They must decide whether to reveal the giant boy's existence to the world. There are humorous touches, for example when the boy combs his hair and static electricity attracts wigs and cats as if they were lint. The occasional black and white illustrations are charming...such as baby pictures showing weight lifters struggling to teach the giant to walk when he was an 8 foot tall toddler. If you enjoyed Otto in Africa, or James and the Giant Peach, or other books by William Pene Du Bois or Roald Dahl, you will enjoy this book. Everyone will smile when reading this upbeat book for young readers.
