The Squeaky Wheel
Published in Paperback by Yearling Books (1992)
Author: Robert Kimmel Smith
Amazon base price: $3.99
Used price: $5.00
Average review score:

Possibly the BEST children's chapter book ever!
What is there to say about The Squeaky Wheel? I first read it about 10 years ago and I thought it was incredible. Smith created very believable characters and put them into situations which I think most if not all kids can relate with. The story is always interesting, and never loses momentum. I still love it and I am now 19 years old (it's just that good!)

I thought the book was outstanding.
The Squeaky Wheel is an awesome story about a kid whose parents are splitting up and he tries every way in his power to try to keep them together. Most people can relate to this story. It will show you about how much pressure it is without both parents together.

Finally!
Beautiful concept, beautifully done using the Universal Rider Waite and in a lovely large box that contain them. Each card
has a smaller Universal rider waite on it and beside it, an accompanying meditation.
For the tarot lover, a wonderful tool for deepening your connection with the 78 cards. Using the affirmations are a great idea for meditation purposes and to gain emotional clarity
when doing a reading or a one a day card method. Deck comes with an introduction and explanatory information booklet by the author that is included.

A Powerful tool designed to promote positive growth & change
This oversized deck will please all who are into self-exploration through the Tarot. The deck is illustrated by Pamela Colman Smith and recolored by Mary Hanson-Roberts.

Each of the 78-cards has a small rendition of the images from the Universal Waite Tarot Deck. The larger portion of each card is devoted to appropriate affirmations to go along with the imagery of that particular card. Appropriate, in that the affirmations, mirror quite nicely the popular interpretation of the Tarot. Text writer, Sally Hill does an outstanding job of writing affirmations for each of the 78 cards.

There can be some very difficult images to handle in the Tarot. For example, the Ten of Swords, is traditionally depicted as ten swords through the back of an individual, indicative of treachery of some kind around the querent, or a feeling that all are against an individual. It is hard to see anything positive when looking at that image. But Hill manages to take this image and show the positive chances for growth to occur under these trying circumstances. She assigns the card affirmations, such as, "I am dealing with negative thoughts that pin me down; I am seeking release from inner confusion and conflicts", and, "I am finding ways to recover my energy and rise to new life". Also, the Court Cards are thought by some to be the most difficult cards to interpret in the deck. The affirmations Hill associates with the Court Cards provide greater insights into these cards.

Using Tarot Affirmations promotes a greater understanding of Tarot imagery and will give depth to the traditional meanings behind the cards. This deck is useful for daily self-analysis, meditation, or to delve deeper into the mysteries of the Tarot. Beginners and advanced students alike, will benefit and grow from the positive messages displayed on these Tarot cards.

To the Last Cartridge
I first read this book back in 1995, when I was in basic training. It was my only escape from the monotony of Army indoctrination. It is a very enjoyable read filled with stories of valiant last stands and last minute reprieves won by hard fighting soldiers throughout history. Unfortunately my drill sergeant took my copy away from me and I have never seen another copy of this book in stores since then. This is the book that got me started reading military history books, and I have never found it's equal in terms of sheer entertainment value and ease of reading, I strongly recommend purchasing this book.

This Book Whups You Like Porcupine On A Rodeo Horse
This has got to be one of the best reads out there for history books. It is about some of the most gripping and inspirational last stands from Western military history. Military history books are just about all I buy these days and I rarely read one more than once. I read this book three times! Like a dork, I loaned it to a friend and never saw it again. It's out of print now, but if you can get it, don't hesitate.

William Smith O'Brien and the Young Ireland Rebellion of 1848
Published in Hardcover by Four Courts Press (2000)
Author: Robert Sloan
Amazon base price: $55.00
Used price: $41.91
Average review score:

Scholarly, informative, and highly recommended
William O'Brien believed in the British Parliament's capacity to give good government in 19th Century Ireland. His attempts to secure liberal reform were largely unsuccessfully, and he entered the 1840s with a growing conviction that the Irish Members were wasting their time at Westminister. In 1843, his political campaign for "justice" in Ireland prefigured the tactics of Parnell, but the effort ended in disappointment and O'Brien joining the Repeal Association in October of 1843. For the next five years he was a major political figure, and finally, a leader in the 1848 Irish rebellion. In William Smith O'brien And The Young Ireland Rebellion Of 1848, Robert Sloan provides the reader with a remarkable and informative political biography, as well as a "window in time" to the events that led up to Ireland's doomed rebellion against an unresponsive and exploitative British rule. Scholarly, informative, and highly recommended.

Not really a review
OK, slight admission - I've never read the book. Frankly, failed Irish rebellions (of which there seem many) are not really my interest. However, the author is my history teacher at school, and a really good bloke. He deserves to do well out of this book, so even if you don't like the subject, buy it and give him a nice supplement to his teacher's salary!

Accounting Principles
Published in Paperback by McGraw-Hill Companies (1993)
Authors: Jack L. Smith, Robert M. Keith, and William L. Stephens
Amazon base price: $17.50
Used price: $5.00
Average review score:

Excellent introduction to accounting.
I speak from my own experience with the 3rd edition of Accounting Principles: this text comes from masters of teaching. Rather than begin with definitions, the authors first submerse you into the course of thought by describing a business problem, then deploy accounting concepts designed to solve it. They grudge no efforts making sure that you understand them correctly-and you do, because the partition between the teacher and the student is removed. Highly recommended.

Action Science (Jossey-Bass Social and Behavioral Science Series)
Published in Hardcover by Jossey-Bass (1985)
Authors: Chris Argyris, Robert Putnam, and Diana McLain Smith
Amazon base price: $46.95
Used price: $349.00
Average review score:

Definitely tough...and more than definitely worth the time.
Action Science (1985) is the result of a collaborative project by Chris Argyris, Robert Putnam and Diana McLain Smith. The authors' main objective was to produce a body of knowledge that would bridge the concepts between theory and practice, thought and action and science and common sense (Argyris, Putnam, and McLain Smith, p.1). The authors' collective experience and expertise establishes them as credible, competent and well versed in the field of leadership. I am convinced that as a group of professionals they are uniquely qualified to comment on the concepts, methods, and skills for research and intervention.Embedded in the text of this work is a tremendous amount of information that is documented and supported by research and established theories. I believe the authors did achieve what they set out to do and ended with a useable, comprehensive, and valid body of knowledge. The information presented in the tables and figures offers clarity and visual reference for data that may otherwise be confusing and frustrating.
Argyris and Schon in Educating the Reflective Practioner (1974) state, "All human beings - not only professional practitioners - need to become competent in taking action and simultaneously reflecting on this action to learn from it." In the process of doing this review, I became engaged in an exercise of self-reflection. I began the task of defining my professional behavior and can sum up my experience by asking what is it that I am doing, why I am doing it, how am I doing it and what I could do different to grow and learn. Finally, I would like to highlight passages that caused me to reflect on my professional practice and development.
1.The concept of double loop learning makes sense and is something I am going to attempt to increase my awareness level.
2. The explanation of espoused theory versus theory-in use conveys a level of unawareness (on the part of most professionals) concerning what they do in contrast to what they think or say they do.
3.Barriers that inhibit our learning are self erected coping mechanisms that may serve a purpose but they are not strategies that will help us grow or learn professionally.
One assertion explored in the text is that by identifying the barriers that exist in our communities of inquiry we might be more prepared to overcome these barriers (Argyris et al. p.89). By defining our barriers we become better equipped to overcome these barriers. In reading Action Science I engaged in a professional exercise of reflective thought. On every page there is material, concepts and theories that are worthy of reflection. I found myself engaged in reflective thought and self-discovery throughout the reading of this text.

A thorough and enlightened discussion of a complicated topic
Dr. Furth does an excellent job of bringing light and understanding to a difficult subject, giving hope and compassion to those who suffer from this disorder and making great strides towards enlightening those who hold unfair prejudices against those afflicted. This book is a must for anyone who suffers from apotemnophilia, for anyone who loves an apotemnophiliac and for professional therapists who have shown ignorance in the face of a client's very real plight. Many compliments to the author for taking a stand and for fighting the good fight.
