One of the best literary magazines around
Open City consistently publishes great stories, poems, essays, and artwork. I look forward to each issue, because each one is so different, and because this magazine continues to be vital and relevant, esp. because many literary magazines are so staid and dull....

A Fundamental Approach To Pakua Chang
This is an excellent fundamental book for anyone seeking to study Pakua Chang. It is a 160 page book filled with more than 400 action photographs that are easy to follow. Philosophy, history, and background information are kept at a minimum. Although some Hsing-I forms are demonstrated in the 18 exercises and 20 self defense applications, Mr Smith was careful to separate the linear (Hsing-I) forms from the circular (Pakua) forms. The Single Palm Change and the Double Palm Change of the Sun Lu Tang method are well demonstrated with second and third variations to execute the "change" more fluidly. The birds-eye view of the foot placement walking around the circle I found very helpful. The author took pains to describe how the muscles of the whole body should react when performing a Pakua movement, while walking the circle. Being the first Pakua Boxing book written in English (1967), it is a well written and profusely illustrated instructional guide to a once lesser known Chinese internal martial art.
The Passmores in America: A Quaker Family Through Six Generations
Published in Hardcover by Edwin Mellen Press (1992)
Amazon base price: $119.95
Average review score:
The Passmores
Thoroughly researched and documented, this book does an outstanding job of comparing previously written information (specifically Passmore manuscripts). The source notations are outstanding which makes it very easy to confirm information back to the original source. Wills, deeds, probate records and other sources are included completely. For anyone related to William Passmore, this book is a must. Although expensive, the volume of original source information well pays for itself. The years of research taken to compile this book is very evident.

Best first read for parents of smart school failures.
Complete history and philosophy of a unique school in Washington, DC The Lab School of Washington, dedicated to the creative education of intelligent disabled students. Most likely a model for all schools in the future. Smith started using the arts to teach difficult students long before the research was there to back her up, then built a living educational laboratory to test her concepts. Should be a useful first-step book for anxious partents of "different" learners, and beginning special education teachers. Also contains some useful and simple lesson plans designed by the artist-teachers of the Lab School, that address particular manifestations of common learning disabilites.

Very Uplifting and Informative.
Mr. Smith is one author who knows how to do his homework. He captures the wit, charisma, and sheer magnetisim, of a great man to little know in our day. In a time where the Religious Right attempts to make the United States a "Christian Nation". And uses threats of hell on those who does not bend to their whims. He tells us of the man who freed millions of minds, and to make God into a honest man. He makes one appreciate the glories of the past and the promises of the future. This book is a must read for anyone with questions about the world and man's place in it

Rory: The Adventures Of A Lion Cub is a unique picturebook story written by gillian Cullinan and illustrated entirely with full-color photographs taken by Patsy Smith Roberts. Rory is about a lion cub who feels ignored and struggles to practice his roar. The beautiful pictures and the gentle story about growing up in one's own time make Rory: The Adventures Of A Lion Cub an original and very special picturebook treasure for young readers.

Ask the Apostle of Faith! California students grill Wigglesworth with pointed, tough questions. This uneducated plumber from Yorkshire answers with grace, humilty, power and truth. From God's heart to Wigglesworth's mouth, the Holy Spirit is given full expression and delivers words of conviction, comfort, and encouragement.
