Not just a beautiful book!
Full color photographs, recipes, history, descriptions of customs, fables and aggadah - this book has it all! "Celebration, The Book of Jewish Festivals" starts at Rosh Hashanah (Head of the Year), and extensively covers all the other major festivals and holy days in their proper order. These are Yom Kippur (Day of Atonement) on 10th Tishri, Sukkoth (Feast of Booths) on 15th Tishri, Hoshana Rabba (7th Day of Sukkot) on 21st Tishri; Shemini Atzeret (8th Day of Sukkoth) on 22nd Tishri, and Simchat Torah (9th Day of Sukkoth) on 23rd Tishri. This volume then moves to Channukah (The Festival of Lights) on 25th Kislev, Purim (Lots) on 14th Adar, and Pesach or Passover (celebrating the Exodus from Egypt) on 15th Nissan. Last this work examines Shavuot (The Festival of Weeks, or Harvest Festival) on 15th Nissan. (Note that Tisha B'Av or 9th Av, which mourns the destruction of the First and Second Temples, is NOT covered, nor are many modern festivals celebrated in Israel.) ---- Unlike many books that have excellent photos and fourth-rate text, the text supports its share of the task. Though an observant Jew in a practicing family would know most of the information presented, for those raised outside the traditions it is a treasure trove of information. The recipes and photographs of food (mmmmm!!) alone are worth the price of this book. Though it looks like a "coffee table" book, it is SEVERAL steps above that!!

The Judds: The True Story of Naomi, Wynonna, and Ashley
Published in Paperback by Citadel Pr (October, 1999)
Author: George Mair
Amazon base price: $14.95

What a horrible waste of money and precious time
Luckily, I picked this poorly written book up at the library before buying. The jacket is convincing, as is the fact that the author had 35-36 yrs experience as a journalist etc. But his innumerable errors border on the ridiculous, including his constant referral to the Merv Griffen show as the "Merv Griffeth Show". His commentary is calculating, biased, and just plain nonsensical. PLEASE, don't waste your time!

Porrly Written, Poorly Edited, Poorly Researched.
I have read almost every book and article written on the Judds. There is no way this author did anything but rehash info from other publications. The typos and mis-statements are so bad that I cannot believe that a reputable publisher would print this. At one point the author attributes a quote to Naomi that is actually some lyrics from the song "John Deere Tractor" which the Judds recorded. This book was a total waste of money. I put it down about half way through and have no desire to finish it. I agree that a country music fan's dollars are much better spent on books like "Love Can Build a Bridge" or "Dreaming Out Loud".

Overall a good book to read for Judd fans.
I did enjoy reading this book, but agree with the reader in Virginia, that the story was difficult to follow at times. The editing in this book was far from meeting my expectations. There are several typos and word reversals throughout the book. One thing stated which really baffled me was the author's statment that Naomi was quite upset by Princess Diana's death in 1997 because Naomi and Princess Diana shared the same birthday. Just a few pages prior to that statement it was stated that Naomi's birthday is January 11 and Princess Diana's birthday was July 1. Where did the author get his information on that one? It made me wonder what other information is his book was incorrect.

Boring
What more is there to say? This is the worst review I have ever written but really it is that simple;this is boring.

It was ghostwritten, duh!
Hello people. First of all, Naomi Campbell did not write this book. It was written for her. She has admitted this in interviews. Why would anyone want to read a novel written by a supermodel anyway. I guess people who read books authored by Fabio would dig it

Lovely
This book was absolutely fabulous! The book is definately a page turner up to the very last page. Naomi weaves the lives of a dozen characters seamlessly. It was very modern and informative. There is a peak at the great exciting and the not so glamorous sides to fashion. The book explains cultural, racially, and international differences thoughts and traditions that just made me think about the role I play as a public viewer and a consumer. Even though it was a fictionalized story there were so many real to life examples of things that happen. It really made me think. I loved the characters, the designs, the designers, the talk of the clothes, romance, sexy scenes(without being trashy), and the kindred networking and friendship between the women characters in the book. I also enjoyed the suspense. Naomi even gives humanity to the most unsavory characters. I hope that Naomi Campbell sends another novel our way. This book is a great read.

American Mixed Race
Published in Hardcover by Rowman & Littlefield Publishing (January, 1995)
Author: Naomi Zack
Amazon base price: $95.00
Used price: $80.00
Average review score:

A mediocre addition to the burgeoning mixed-race literature
Zack comes up with really dynamic concepts for books. I wish her career well. However, I wasn't thrilled by this book. Zack edits an anthology on "microdiversity", basically investigating the fac that there is more diversity within races than between races and mixed-race individuals substantiate this. Zack basically goes back and forth on whether racial categories should be used strategically or obliterated. The anthology has some interesting pieces from Native Americans. It is lacking on pieces from Latinos. It is very academic: everyday fans of Maria Root's books may be stumped here. The book ends with this awkard, unnecessary essay by a Jewish woman that is not even bi-religious. This book isn't terrible, it's just that there are better books on multiraciality out there.

Cute story, but very little educational value.
I volunteer in public education for a large fire department and am always looking for good books to read to children. I was very disappointed when I received this book. The story shows "Mickey and Friends" getting the old fire engine ready for a parade, while they brag about things they have done as junior volunteers. The book briefly discusses the difference between a pumper truck and a hook and ladder. No other mention is made of fire apparatus, equipment, or the job of being a firefighter. The books greatest shortcoming is that there is absolutely NO fire safety message in this book.

Syrian Intervention in Lebanon: The 1975-76 Civil War

Perhaps insightful, but utterly unreadable.
Weinberger offers some useful insights into the causes of Syrian intervention in the Lebanese civil war, but her muddled prose undermines any good points she may have intended to express. Namely, she apparently has yet to discover the active voice.

If this is literature, then I don't want to read.
I was assigned to read "Woman Between Mirrors" for my Latin American History class at Winona State University in Winona, Minnesota. I do not have a background in literature, but I do consider myself to be an avid reader. I found this book to be confusing, misleading and a backward step in the feminist movement. The woman's portrayal of herself in this book is confusing to the reader and is very difficult to read. The book takes an unexpected turn in the middle, but when it is completed, the reader is not sure if this event even took place. There are three different parts to the one character in the book and it takes twenty pages out of this short novel to even figure that aspect of the book out. Maybe something was lost in the translation to English, but I was being generous with the two stars. The only positive thing that this book does is to show the different and complicting aspects to a woman and the contradicting feelings that a woman can have about one situation. My instructor told me that this book was suppose to portray an Afro-Brazilian woman. From reading this book, I have no idea where that came from. I would not suggest reading this book unless you want a hard-to-read book about nothing in particular.

Pre-digested intoduction to Eames with a Bogus Cover
To begin with, I read a lot of books about Charles & Ray Eames and have a great love of mid century modern. This is aimed rather lower. My first complaint is the cover. Whose chair is this? It's certainly not one designed by Eames. The rest of the book is a rehash history in 21 pages of everything you probably know unless this is your first Eames book. The remaining 50 or 60 pages are photos you've seen everywhere, but without the contextual explanation that makes it all fall into place. One example of this lack of contextual explanation is a picture of a platform over someone laying on the grass. There is no mention that this photo set up was for a shot from "The Power of 10". This would be appropriate reading for someone very young as a quick introduction, but if you already know much about Charles and Ray Eames you should make another pick.

Must have Doctorate to read this book!
I am extremely dissapointed with this book. It has been assigned to me for graduate school and I dread picking it up to read assignments. I am studying for my Master's degree but this book requires you to already have a PhD to be able to understand it. I guarantee that in at least in every paragraph you will have to stop reading to look up at least 2-3 "new" words. This book was not written for students. I feel sorry for anyone who has to read this book for any studies. Good luck! It's boring and confusing!
