Of the many parenting books I've read, this one really stands out. It provides so many practical strategies, and the exercises in it have helped me improvethe way I parent. For the first time, I actually have a method for helping my kids resolve conflicts that works. I highly recommend this book to all parents. Give it to yourself as a gift and get a copy for your friends. They'll thank you.

Peace is at hand!
If you are trying to cope with the demands of work, taking care of your home and countless other obligations and responsibilities while ensuring the healthy development and well-being of your children, the sooner you read this book, the better! Naomi Drew's book provides practical and realistic approaches to everyday challenges faced by parents in relating to their children. Real-life situations are presented. You will undoubtedly say to yourself, "I know that scenario. I've been in it and this is what I can do to handle it more effectively and peacefully next time". The book also provides a wonderful context for peaceful parenting. This Book Helped Me
After my mom read Peaceful Parents, Peaceful Kids she made copies of the "Peaceful Kids Action Plan" for me. I hung each page in my room like the book said, and every day I followed the Peaceful Kids Action Steps. It's really helping me get along better with my family, even my little brother. I think more parents should get this book and use it with their kids. It really works. Plus my mom doesn't yell as much now.

Wonderful Reference!
I'm fairly new to cooking rice other than Uncle Ben's in a pot on the stove. Recently I invested in a quality rice cooker, and decided to get a bit more serious. This book has been a tremendous help to me the novice, not only did I learn the basics of cooking rice well, but I also learned that I didn't know much about rice at all. I never realized that there were so many different kinds of rice, or basic things like the difference between long-grain, medium-grain, and short-grain, or how to recognize high-quality rice, or the idea of washing rice. Then there was information on how to find different kinds of rice (I discovered that locally here in Raleigh I can find dozens of kinds easily, cheaply, and wow, Uncle Ben's now has a lot of new cousins on my shelf!).
Then the recipes in this book are plentiful, and the pictures are great. The authors did a fantastic job, and if you like rice, or would like to learn to love rice and all of its varieties, GET THIS BOOK! It's really opened up a new 'rice' world for us! ;-)

Great job as always!
I got to know about Jeffrey and Naomi from Julia Child's "Baking with Julia" PBS series. Bought their older book "Flatbread and Flavors" and found it to be totally delightful. Flatbreads and Flavors and Seductions of Rice have been written with thorough understanding of the different cultures and cuisines. I also love the travel stories that are told with cultural sensitivity and down-to-earth spirit. Here's two Americans who travel to some poorer parts of the world to learn from and mingle with the locals, not to act like they're superior than the rest of the world population just because they're from an affluent and influential country like the US (unlike many North Americans who have visited my country). I have never met Jeffrey or Naomi in person, but from their writings, I think they're two terrific people who also know how to cook!

The recipes are as authentic as you can expect. It's a breath of fresh air in the midst of this haute cuisine craze where chefs create foods to feed their egos, not their customers and obsess about putting together in the same dish all the unusual ingredients. This is real downhome stuff, not some Americanized versions of ethnic cuisine.

Well done! Keep up the great work!

The world in a grain of...rice
How we feed ourselves is so much of what we call culture, and one of the great pleasures of travel. In this book, Jeffrey and Naomi lead us on journeys into other worlds through their photos, stories and recipes.

Even for a life-long rice eater, like me, the recipes provide new ideas. Sometimes I'm inspired to explore for new ingredients, an adventure within my own city. When I want comfort, I retreat to the familiar, maybe trying a new accompaniment. Other times, I use the book as a starting point, and do what cooks all over the world do, including the authors: work with what's on hand.

The crisp black and white photos entertain and educate as good photo journalism will. The colour photos are spectacular; many are exhibition-quality art shots. The authors have travelled places I'll never go: the stories and pictures remind me of my good fortune to be living as I do. This book feeds the spirit as well as the body.

an earnest parable about the nature of God
As Nobel Prize winner for Literature in 1951, Par Lagerkvist must be recognized as one of Sweden's great authors. I know virtually nothing else about him. This was the first book of his that I ever read. I cannot say that I was moved to want to continue. THE SIBYL is a thin volume, a tale, a fable, a parable, not a novel in the usual sense of the word. A wanderer (see the legend of the Wandering Jew) appears above the town of Delphi in the first century A.D. He hails from Jerusalem and has been cursed by Jesus for an act of unkindness on his way to the crucifixion. The wanderer appears at Delphi looking for someone who can foretell if he really is condemned to wander forever. The only hope turns out to be a social outcast, an old woman living high on the mountain above town. He tells her his story, briefly. The rest of the book is her story---of how she became the vessel through which the oracle spoke and her single, ill-fated love, a cruel rape, and subsequent disgrace. Lagerkvist deals with eternal issues. God is cruel, incomprehensible and frightening, he says. His acts have no meaning discernible by humans. But He is also good and full of a meaning (which we cannot understand). God's connection to Man is both a blessing and a curse. Scandinavian gloom spreads and spreads and, in this age of terrorism, poverty, hunger, and ecological disaster, you feel that you have heard this all before. In fact, you have seen the proof of it all around you. Do you need to read about it again, cloaked in antiquity's faded garments ? I did not particularly enjoy this book, though it is certainly well-written and intelligent. Pessimistic messages are common in literature; so is the consideration of the largest issues. I felt that this tale was a little too didactic, a little too preachy for my taste.

Lagerkvist's Masterpeice on the Divine....
The Sibyl is most certainly a wonderful piece of literature of profound imagery and mythical content. It was the first book I read from the Nobel Prize of Literature recipient for Barrabus - Par Lagerkvist, which ignited my interest in his other novels, short stories and essays.
The Sibyl is a remarkable short parable about the struggles of the good and bad occurrences between the divine and human beings.
A wondering Jew whose only experience with God being a negative one, was cursed by the son of God for his impatient words on his way to crucifixion, demonstrating how one instance could change a person's life forever. He begins to believe in the curse and seeks insight from a legendary Pathia, who lives in a cave in the mountains over looking Delphi. The Pathia like himself experienced the wrath of God. She then tells a story of the blissful love to the merciless unsympathetic side which exists in the same God. Unlike the Jew however the Sibyl accepts God. The divine is not just a man on the clouds dictating people's lives but it's the impulses of nature, in animals, in lust, in every emotion humans are faced with.
This book leaves us with one prophecy which is that God is both love and hate and both exist to form a connection with him. The Sibyl dives into the quest for meaning, dealing with terrors and the wonders of existence. Wonderfully written and a truly captivating read.

Not quite art
Perhaps this book would be better titled "Forbidden Garage Sale Finds". The art in this collection is often second or third rate with a emphasis on mass produced decorative art (lamps, boxes etc.) Miss Naomi has produced a book that will be of interest to those who already have every other book of erotic art but if you are looking for a book of museum grade erotica you would be better served looking elsewhere (maybe "Erotic Art: From the 17th to the 20th Century" edited by Peter Weirmair but it might be out of print)

The Best and Getting Better
The magnitude of Miss Naomi's collection is mind boggling after viewing this book I had the opportunity to view this collection in person and was doubly impressed This is a must have book for your collection !

Best erotic art book ever written for the modern generation
I thought it was facinating, colorful, exiting and fun. Everyone should experience the fun of reading it.

Excellent book for second marriages, or even for firsts
This is really an excellent book on how to grow in a loving, committed relationship. The authors are married to each other, both for the second time, and they draw from both their own experiences and that of their couples therapy clients. But this isn't just a bunch of case histories strung together-- there's a lot of good advice and insight in between the examples. I especially got a lot out of the chapter on finances. I've read a lot of books on love & relationships, but never anything that mentioned how we all have deep-seated feelings about money that we don't feel comfortable talking about! Yet I've known quite a few couples who had deep divisions over money. It makes a lot of sense that couples (many of them older, and with substantial assets) would want to talk about how they intend to handle money before they get married, but how many people do? The Moseleys explain why this is such a scary thing. And with that understanding, it makes it easier to talk about money issues with your partner. In summary, I found this a very hopeful and helpful book.

Excellent suggestions from experts who have been there.
Despite alarming divorce rates, marriage is as popular as it had ever been judging by the fact that almost everyone who can get married does it at least once in their lives and twice or more if they can. However, "practice makes perfect" doesn't usually apply to remarriage. Unless one learns how to be intimate, how do deal with negotiating relationships, how to be sure that your mate gets what they need while you get what you want, a second marriage might add up to an even greater disappointment than the first effort. However, if you read and absorb the salient theories and practices contained in the Moseley's MAKING YOUR SECOND MARRIAGE A FIRST CLASS SUCCESS you have much better than a fighting chance to create the kind of relationship that you've always wanted. What makes this book unusual, besides the sound theories and methods that are clearly and concisely presented, are the excellent case studies with which the reader can identify with and learn from. The Moseley's include their own struggles and successes in their second marriages. Their observations and methods are validated through their own experiences and the results of the extensive workshops they provide for those who want to establish and maintain high guality relationships. I'll be referring some of my marital and family clients to this four star volume. If you're having trouble in your second marriage, or want to avoid them, read the book and find a third party to help you to implement the highly effective program the Moseleys have developed. Better yet, attend one of their workshops.

finally, what it takes to make marriage work
If you are really serious about doing what it takes to create a marriage that is vital, juicy and can grow as you do, then this book will give you a guide. The Moselely's do not gloss over the very real challenges of relationship, and the commitment it takes to 'grow up' together. The book is easily read, non-technical, yet covers the essential issues that couples face. I thought it surely was written precisely about me! It is particularly helpful in learning how to get into feelings in a way that builds intimacy and dissolves resentments. The nitty-gritty difficulties of money and blended families are well-covered, and the often overlooked importance of each person having a strong relationship with their own self is emphasized, along with a road map to get there. The Moseley's really know what they are talking about, and you will get concrete help from reading this book.

Family values with Edwardian charm
This sentimental favorite children's book has the moral values of E. Nesbitt, who was a famous liberal activist in England. She creates a household utopian vision of a world where people are naturally good and where parents raise their children to be helpful and honest and brave.

This provides the background charm for a really lovely tale about a family in distress who sticks together bravely and provides a shining example to all around them, while being aided by equally high-minded and kind folks around them.

A knock on the door at the idyllic middle class town home of the children ends with a tragedy that they can scarcely understand. But Mother is brave and despite rumors of terrible things, they make their way to a more modest home in the country, next to a railway line. The children become friends with the trains and the regular commuters who wave at them. Their fascination with the train results in a heroic rescue. Meanwhile, their situation is sometimes difficult, and they develop some remarkable strategies for getting aid. There is a happy ending.

The morals taught to the children are particularly British (helpful, kind, brave) but certainly apply to us as well. The goodness that the children spread is really a lovely message and contributes to the charm and longevity of this great favorite. Good for reading aloud.

the railway children is a 9 out of 10 book!
I like the Railway Children a lot, especially how the author told the story. I liked Bobbie because there is something different about her,she was helpful and sweet at the same time. I am wondering where the dog James went? Other than that, the story was great!

The Railway Children is the best book
It is a story about three children who change a little town in England. The book is very adventurous in every chapter. It is a very well writen book.

Alan and Naomi
The story of Alan and Naomi is a heartwarming incredible story.I got hooked on it because it just was a book you must find out if Naomi is going to be ok or if she is going to be lost in her own waorld forever. It also makes you wonder if Alan is going to let his freinds in on his "secret errand" that he does everyday. This book should be read by anyone who has ever made fun of someone who is "diffrent" the people who were made fun of should read this also to let them know what goes through the mind of the people whom are making fun of them.Outstanding book!

Alan and Naomi
I like this story because a Alan has to help this girl Naomi come out of her shell. In the process Alan finds out her father was beaten to death by the Nazis because he he made maps that lead Jews to freedom. This story tells about the true terrors of the holocaust. And how americans helped the Jews. I recomend this book because it is sad, exciting, and scary. Plus it is a very short book.

READ THIS NOW!!!
Just stop everything you are doing this second and read "Alan and Naomi" now!!! This book is true to life and people. Between Alan's conflict of wanting to be "one of the gang" and Naomi's ever lasting memory of the Nazi invasion in France, I could not put this book down. Myron Levoy stays very real and down to earth in his writing, and the ending is just the way it should to put a little spice into the book. Now, get up out of your chair and read it!!!

torn between two cultures
this novel does a wonderful job of presenting the discursive domination of the west present in japan. the struggle between joji and naomi shows the inability to reconcile cultural identity, which is portrayed in the transition to westernization and a return to tradition. in addition, several other important issues are discussed within the novel, including the empowerment of women and the idea of manufactured definitions (ie the definition of "modernism" within the novel)

its appeal lies in the readers inability to truly relate to either of the main characters: joji with his masochistic self and naomi as a briliant sort of moga ("modern girl".) the most tantalizing aspect of the novel is questioning where the blame lies... is joji responsible for naomi's lack of conscience because he took advantage of a young woman with nowhere to turn and molded her into a westernized play thing or would naomi have turned out like this anyway, due to her scandalous background?

in reading the novel, also keep in mind whether tanizaki is criticizing the west or the way the west appears in japan?

Hate Naomi or Joji? Hmmm, I Hate Them Both!!
This is the first Tanizaki novel I've read, and I enjoyed it a greay deal, but I hate both of the main characters. The story starts off with Joji a 28 year old bachelor who falls for a pretty, quiet 15 year old girl named Naomi. Many things attact Joji to Naomi: her beauty, her Eurasian features, but the main thing is her name: Naomi. The name is written with three Chinese characters and it could also be a western name. Joji finds this very attractive. He starts to hang out with the girl going to Western restaurants and going to see Western movies. He eventually takes the girl in, wanting to make her a prop lady. He pays for her to take English and music lessons. This is when things start to go downhill. Naomi's english is very poor, and Joji makes her work very hard calling her an idiot when she doesn'yt understand passive voice. Naomi gets angry and very obstinate. As time goes on Joji marries Naomi, but keepos it secret from everyone else. He enjoys washing her body and playing horse with her, treating her like a play thing. They eventually go out and study dancing together, but this leads to more problems because of some of the men Naomi meets. I'm not going any further. Read the book and experience how a weak-willed man acts when the woman he loves cheats on him constantly, but can't get enough of her. See how a respectful business man is reduced to a submissive husband to his teenage wife. Very disturbing, but a good read nonetheless.

brilliantly written but infuriating
it's hard to imagine this book being written over 75 years ago. tanizaki writes with great clarity and precision, and like many japanese novels the use of language is wonderful.

but the subject! naomi is the most vile, cruel, manipulative, evil creature he could have imagined. joji, her hapless benafactor and husband, starts of being somewhat sympathetic, but in the end it's tempting to strangle him just to put him out of his misery.

this is all done with great style. at turns creepily erotic, hilarious and pathetic, it's difficult to come away from this novel feeling anything less than defiled.

a scathing indictment of the 1920's japanese obsession with things western, i've trouble understanding why government censors briefly terminated newspaper serialization in 1924; it shows nothing even remotely appealing about western culture or lifestyle.

a good tonic for this was peter mccarthy's "little bunny on the move".

Fop Flop In the most elegant apparel Nothing but worm silks In the finest golden thread And superior king red velvet sashes

You'd think I would have known better? I couldn't blame them who wouldn't? cut air with scissors while sewing their needles into invisible cloth for the very low price of..... silk a loom golden thread a full bag of coins Oh those Villain Scoundrels! Now, I know not to buy such vestments with rather large investments Oh what a bratty gnatty I was For I thought I was cool but truly a fool Why emperor you look rather bare, that's quite rare! I was in such a pursuit For only a birthday suit I must admit now Me, My very own self yes indeed, your emperor himself have become a stupid and incompetent dandy All for the Imaginary Image! and now I live happily ever after, no more garb well, that is until the next apparel discovery (Now if you'll excuse me there's a clothier waiting at my door who says he's created the latest design in Pajama attire)

A delightful gem
Generally, I do not care for audio books; many of the readers speak in a dull voice that rapidly drives me either away from the story or to sleep. However, there are a few exceptions; this is one.

Understand, that this is not the normal audio book; this edtion has a large cast of actors who collaborated to produce this item as a fund raiser for Starbright.

The result is an ensemble piece that is witty and charming. Part of the fun for me, was guessing who was reading before looking at the cast list included in the box.

Other folks feel that this isn't for children; I don't know as I don't have children, but I found that my "inner child" was highly entertained for 40 minutes with this tape.

If you are a fan of one or more of the actors in this edition or like puns (there are many here!), then you will probably like the Starbright edtion of the Emporer's New Clothes.

Helped my son to read
I had been given 2 of these books from a friend and I decided to see if there were anymore. My son loves this book. He's now working on reading the adult side. It's a great idea to have a page each, 1 for the adult and 1 for the child. We have several of these books now and I see my son sitting down and reading them on his own.

Drama Queens (AKA: The Judds)
Drama Queens!!! Wow!!! A fascinating story, but maybe more "story" than "truth", eh? In any case, a good read. Fast, compelling, and lively. A plot twist on every page. The television mini-series didn't live up to the book. Would have been better as a Big Screen Movie. Two thumbs up!!

WoW!!!!
This book was one of the best books I have ever read. It was happy, sad, and surprising. I thought that maybe I wouldn't think Naomi and Wynonna were the best, but the effect was the opposite. I respect and believe The Judds are still the best. This book made me want to work even harder toward my dream, which is to sing. I would like to thank the Judds. Thanks.

A True-to-Life Bible Story For All!
This is the intense, yet comical, yet real life story of the famous duo, The Judds. From the beginning, to Wynonna's solo career. In my life, I have never been inspired after reading a book, but this changed my life. I have always been a huge fan of The Judds, but this proved why. Although it is sometimes hard to swallow some of the things this family had to do to survive, it is apparant througout the autobiography that with love and the lord by your side, even the worse things can be a guiding light and proves that love really can build a bridge.
