A Fantastic Resource for Educators
Learning the Skills of Peacemaking has turned our school around. Every teacher has a copy, and by doing the lessons on a regular basis we have reduced fighting among students and we've completely improved the atmosphere in our building. I didn't think these changes would be possible, but I've seen them happen with my own eyes. I strongly urge other teachers and adminstators to buy this book. It really makes a difference.

The Legacy of Hiroshima - Its Past, Our Future
Naomi SHOHNO, "The Legacy of Hiroshima - Its Past, Our Future." Few people realize that over the fifty years following 1945 there were created and stored in world arsenals the equivalent of 70 Hiroshima bombs every day of every one of those fifty years. On August 6, 1945 Naomi Shohno was a science student at Kyushu University, 380 kilometers from his home in Hiroshima. He returned home on the afternoon of August 9 at Koi station of west Hiroshima to see if his home and family were safe. Hiroshima was gone. Under the hot August sun, there was no sound; it was a city of death. The Hiroshima experience has been Shohno's life work. He explains it well in this 150 page paperback, eye-opening and well-received by my students as one of their textbooks. The world has seen many changes since its 1986 publication but the basic danger remains and no one yet has found the solution. (The American Press called this event, "The story of the century.")

Magic in the Roman World: Pagans, Jews and Christians (Religion in the First Christian Centuries)

Innovative and compelling treament of magic ritual
The latest work by Naomi Janowitz of UC Davis and Hebrew University is a fast-paced and well-organized treatment of "magic" in the first three centuries. "Magic", as Janowitz shows, was at this time very much defined by those who were hoping to discredit a ritual or practice of another party, and was in most cases merely an adjective of disparagement used by the competition. To those using it, magic wasn't magic at all, rather magic was power and efficacy steeped in ritual. Discussions include Greco-Roman, Christian, and Jewish concepts of magic, theories on daemons and angels, cursing and binding spells, practices of divination and deification, and a focus on the gender bias against women in the practice of magic throughout the period.
I found the book a breath of fresh air, and an enormous step forward, not least of which in the portions dealing with women's issues, which should prove a major contribution to women's studies in late antiquity. But also the bibliography alone is worth noting as it is extensive and reveals the wide range of sources brought to the topic, and is alone worth the price of the text. The book is not long and can be easily read, even by a newcomer to the topic, in one or two sittings.

Mauprat - The Best George Sand Book Ever!
Mauprat is a novel about uncultured Bernard who rescues the beautiful Edmee de Mauprat. Bernard falls in love with Edmee, and Edmee's father thinks of Bernard as his son. He wants Bernard and Edmee to be together, but because Edmee feels superior to Bernard, she cannot allow herself to love him. She tries to educate Bernard and teach him manners. Once that is done, Edmee begins to love Bernard. This book has a very interesting theme of a women's superiority to a man. I highly recommend it! It was one of my favorite George Sand novels, and it is interesting because it is told my the perspective of eldery Bernard looking back on his life. Read this book!
