I was overwhelmed by this book.
I bought this book while visiting Peace Memorial Museum in Hiroshima, in November 1998. Even if I had not been to this incredible place, this book alone would have affected me greatly. The accounts are brief and striking. My heart ached for the children, whether they were the Hibakusha (Bomb Survivors)telling the story as an adult, or whether they were describing a horrific scene involving these innocents. This isn't a dry historical account with scientific information and political overview. It is a recollection of activities, emotions, and devastation experienced by real people on and since August 6, 1945. I wish there were more books along this line, written as well as this one.

Important and beautiful
This book deserves all of the praise it has earned. Dr. Rosenblum is passionately involved in the art and craft of photography. She has a world view that she puts to great use here. One of the best and most respectful things about this survey, aside from its obvious profusion of well-chosen photographs and the assured and authoritative commentary, is the effectiveness of Dr. Rosenblum's knowing method of assemblage. In the arrangement of these photographs there is ample room for readerly associations, emotions, and thought. The commentary, both in form and content, reinforces this. We are in the hands of a gifted teacher, in fact. Whether it is a series of photos of human hands, folds of clothing, leaves, children's faces, natural forms - the reader is taken on a deeply affecting, associative journey, and the results run deep. This is in addition to this book's obvious workhorse usefulness as a terrific reference work.
One hundred pages at the book's end are devoted to notes, careful and thorough biographies of the photographers, a selected bibliography, and an index. The production values are first-rate. A wonderful book.

The best jewish child recording book ever!
What a wonderful way to track all the important people and events in your child's life! It includes a family tree (going back 2 generations), all the important prayers and explanations for a child,... I keep records for each of my children and they also enjoy looking back and reading it. The book includes all the traditional "tracking information" PLUS many quotes from the sages, which makes it extra beautiful to read and "kvell" over.

an impressive collection of plays by a modern master
a collection of plays. i first became aware of wallace when my university did one flea spare, which i was extremely impressed with for its depth, creativity, emotional focus, and brechtian wit. i really enjoyed one flea spare on the printed page; i truly believe this is a play that deserves to be put in the same class as the other american greats, such death of a salesman, mourning becomes electra, and the crucible. in one flea spare the action involves four people impatiently waiting out a quarantine sentence at the time of the great plague in london and its themes include the loss of innocence and class and gender struggles. the final play, trestle at pope lick creek, is definitely the second best of the plays. set in a rural community, the play's unflinching look at a world of poverty and lack of opportunity is chilling and memorable. there were parts of the other 3 plays that were also well done, although in general they were not as tightly scripted. it is interesting to see wallace's general style becomes more apparent in reading these plays, in her language and her use of such devices as playing with time. in the heart of america is set during the gulf war and the the war boys concerns three men watching the mexican-american border for illegal immigrants. slaughter city is about workers in a slaughtering factory who are trying to preserve their union. all in all this is definitely an impressive collection of plays by a modern master.

compelling portrait of a complex man
A window on an aspect of American Jewish history not as familiar as the mass immigration from eastern Europe, Cohen's book is also an unexpected window on an even less frequently explored topic: the use of great wealth to do good in the world. Schiff did not establish a foundation, screen grants, or hire professional advisors to guide his good works - he simply used his money to right wrongs where he saw them. Like giving half a million dollars to Barnard College as a reward for it's refusal to countenance discrimination against Jews. Or arranging mega-buck loans for the Japanese government during the Russo-Japanese War as a way of sticking it to the anti-Semitic Russians (who lost that war.) Not all of his ideas worked out, but you have to admire a man who had the courage of his convictions, and the character to put his money where his mouth was.

Easy To Read Intro to Jewish History
I found this book to be a easy-to-read introduction to Judaism from biblical times to the present. The book is organized into 100 chapters of 2 to 4 pages each, presented in chronological order, providing a great introduction to the history of the Jewish people. This is an interesting entry-level history of the ups and downs of Jewish civilization, with no theological axe to grind.

Cait Sawyer ran away from the mental hospital that her step father had her in. Cait knows that he is responsible for her mothers death and now he is trying to kill her, but make it look like she was crazy and suicidal. Cait saw a chance to escape and she ran to the café hoping that someone would help her. Unfortunately, the hospital staff, doctors, her step father, and the authorities find her at the café, but before they catch her she manages to slip out the back door.
The last thing that Shay wanted to find when he got back out to his truck was the crazy woman from the café. Shay knew she was trouble and he wanted no part of it, but he knew that if what she said was true than he could not turn her in either.
Shay and Cait learn a lot about themselves and each other on there road trip. Unfortunately, their time together may be a lot shorter than they thought. Cait's step father has no intention of letting her or anyone who tries to help her live. Very interesting and captivating story. It's not often that you read a romance novel that has a handsome trucker as the leading male character. I would love to read about Shay's brother-in-law, Rick Jarvis.
