LIfe in Peru
This novel is a great example of a mixture of romanticism and naturalism. Although it is at times over-dramatic, the social injustice that Matto de Turner shows is a good historical analysis of Peru in the 19th century. The characters seem to be portrayed more as collective ideals or stereotypes, but the message is still shown that the people with power abused their stations. A must read for people interested in the history of Peru or even of social injustice in South America. Reading it in its original spanish is usually the best to get the full meaning, but it is a pretty rare book to find, so the english version is still very good.
A seldom told story
This woman dared to tell the story of the exploitation of the Quechua people in Peru. She shows through her romance how, the state - in the hands of the hispanic -, the church and the law were united in the colonization of Peru, exploiting the native populations as much as they could, keeping the descendents of the Inca empire either captive or as slave workers. Well a surprising fact, is that this woman wrote the book around 1889 (when it was first published) a time, when a woman writter was not seen with good eyes. She was excommunicated by the bishop and The book was - of course - burnt and remain almost unknown till the late 60's when it was reedicted.
Explaining Reform Judaism

On liberal judaism....
Though it is a short book, it gives one a good description of Reform Judaism. This book shows the evolution of this form of Judaism and how many times it's changed. Sadly enough, though, it paints the picture of a confused religious view that lacks consistency. This book would arouse one to possibly explore their cultural and political associations, but lack a lot on the spiritual side.
Extraordinary work, explaining the real meaning of Judaism
I borrowed this book in a public library. Had no big hopes, but was curious. How wrong I was. I practically devoured it after reading a few pages. Rabbi Borowitz has the special talent of knowing how to explain in simple words very complicated philosophical concepts of Judaism. Besides he does it in such a candid manner that my eyes went wet several times. Believe me, if you want your child to understand the essence of Judaism, this the book to give him/her as a gift. The title is a bit misleading, no matter which is your denomination - Reform, Conservative or Orthodox, even if Christian, this book will bring you the warmth of real "menchlichkeit" - how to become a decent human being.

Wonderful for Travel in the USA
I drove from coast to coast using this book and an road map atlas. It was of great help. My only complaint is that there were very few maps in the book. If you are planning a road trip, then don't count on this book as an atlas. Regardless of that, this book has almost everything you need, phone numbers, directions, descriptions, and a long list of places to stay. It's well worth it.
pretty good
Since I am planing to go to road trip in this summer, I went through a lot of travel books across america. This is the best one out there. It not only includes hot spots in all over the usa, but also has a detail rates in hotels and motels. I love it. I am sure I will have a great time with this book handy!

Fiction not fact
I was mislead by the synopsis which implied that this was an academic study of the Lilith myth. It is first and foremost, fictional and artistic interpretations of Lilith. This book is for anyone interested in the retellings of this myth, but it is not for those interested in the academic approach to Lilith, although one may pick up a few interesting bits of informatio along the way.
An enjoyable and broadly-ranging anthology
This anthology is a true Midrash, a collection of poems, stories, pensees, and more scholarly reflections on Lilith. The authors engage with Lilith as she has been portrayed historically, and through their imaginative re-visioning of who she is and what she means. The writing is consistently quite good, and the authors' voices compelling. I particularly enjoyed the work of Leslea Newman and Shoshana T. Daniel. Though somewhat pricey, this is a nice-looking volume with *a lot* of pieces.

An absolutely gripping page-turner!
I first read this book when I was 13 years old, and I actually jumped out of my chair when someone tapped me on the shoulder during a particularly suspenseful part! It was my first suspense novel, and definitely made me a fan of the genre. I agree that the TV movie (with Richard Thomas as the evil brother!) was not as enthralling as the book, but was a pretty good adaptation of the story nonetheless. If you can find this book, it's certainly worth the read.
This is a very fast reading, riveting suspense story. VG.
I read this book several years ago and made the mistake of loaning it out -- never got it back. I would recommend it to anyone who enjoys suspense stories. I was thrilled when a TV movie version of this book came out. Thrilled but then disappointed. Read the book -- much better!
American and European Postcards of Harrison Fisher Illustrator: Reference Book, Price Guide & Collector's Checklist

American & European Postcards of Harrison Fisher
This is a delightful book and indispensible if you are a collector of Harrison Fisher postcards. I was disappointed that ten of Book Advertising postcards were NOT illustrated. If they have never been discovered that is fine, but even then the illustration from the original magazine would have helped to picture the art color and compostion of that particular card. The colors were also a concern as in many cases the illustrations appeared more muddy than the cards that I own. It is a pity that a dust cover was not also included as already the printed board cover is getting well thumbed! But these little quibbles apart I am very pleased to now own this book, especially as I know which cards I particularly want to add to my collection.

A fresh honest yachting yarn with plenty of self-irony
This young Lass from NZ finds her "course" in life with a little help from some UK friends (incl. 53 foot of boat) and sets off to circumnavigate the globe. She was the first woman to do it (and female around the Horn alone) and that is maybe a much greater feat than by first man. Why you ask? Hint? This circumnavigator was learning EVERYTHING on the go.. very little previous experience. Reading the book also brings back that only a "few years ago" sailers must cope with sextant, "dead reckoning" and radio. No satelite allerted helicopter rescue or 24 hour pin-point GPS navigation. Naomi was not only the first female long-distance hero, but maybe she was the last of the real "classic" navigators. What makes her book special is her very lack of experience and her disarming honesty about everything. When reading her account you too learn as you go and soon you can't help feeling as you are the lone sailor onboard "Express Crusader" forging ahead. One of the most memorable books in this field I think. Recommended! (I am Swedish learning English)

Good multicultural picture book
I had to read several multicultural books for a college class in children's literature. I found this book at the library. I think it would be a nice book for children in 2nd grade to read. Not a lot of text.
Bisexual Politics: Theories, Queries, and Visions (Haworth Gay and Lesbian Studies)

A good overview
I enjoyed the book overall, but found it lacking in someperspectives. It's wonderful from a multi-cultural standpoint, butthere is very little information about rural bisexuals, or those _not_ living out, queer lives. It's a good place to start reading on the subject, though, and the historical perspective was interesting.
