Tchipayuk: A look into what life was like
I highly recommend this book to anyone who wishes to take a journey into a boy's life where things are completely different than today. And follow this little boy go to a new world and become a man in a different setting than he grew up in. Lavallee does a wonderful job of describing the settings, the people and the emotions. He did exstenive research to be sure of it's accuracy. I hope that you will thoroughly enjoy this book, and hopefully as much as I have.

soul touching to any race of people.
Coming from Winnipeg Canada and knowing a bit about the locall history I bought this book for intertainment. But to my suprise it turned out to be a spiritual journey. This book is a break through in understanding each other in our country. I would highly recommend reading.

Therapist's guide
This book helped me to identify forces that had been influencing me as I worked with patients -- forces I had been impacted by but which had remained out of my awareness...probably due to my need to survive in this era of managed care. I am grateful for the opportunity to look more deeply into myself and the work I do with patients, and realize that we have all been compromised by the managed care environment. Bravo to the courage of these authors to challenge us all.

Essential reading for clinicians, supervisors, educators
This book is a major entry in the debate over managed care. In addition to its theoretical and historical chapters, it offers the real and complex experiences of seasoned clinicians wrestling with the juggernaut of managed care. And in so doing, it provides a significant source of learning for psychologists, social workers, and psychiatrists entering the work force and for the supervisors and educators involved in their clinical training. This should be read.

Funny, entertaining, fun to read to your children!
I bought this book for my son when he was probably around 6 or 7 years old. (or 8? My memory fails me.) He has since grown into a teenager with a great sense of humor, and I believe that books like this one helped shape that! This is the tale of what happened to the three little pigs, from the wolf's point of view. It's funny how the wolf tries to appeal to the readers' sympathies, as he describes how he's simply been misunderstood all these years! This book may be your child's introduction to sarcasm, so make sure they are old enough to "get it". I always enjoyed reading this one out loud to my son!

The True Story of the 3 Little Pigs
Everybody knows the story of the Three Little Pigs. Or at least they think they do. Read to find out what really happened from the Wolf's point of view.

Another winner for Doug Allyn
Doug Allyn wades into a new character for this book. His name is Bobby Cruz and he's a tenacious young man determined to fulfill his contractual obligation to "dot the i's and cross the t's" in a follow up investigation into the whereabouts of father and son mobsters.
Bobby focuses in on the small town where Roland Costa and his son Rol, jr. were last seen. They had been there to attend the funeral of Roland's brother and then seemingly disappeared.
Nobody expects Bobby to discover anything new. He's just supposed to give the place a second look.
When somebody begins shooting at Bobby, it becomes obvious that in this rural setting, someone has something more than just a small town mentality resentment of this outsider.
The ending comes out of nowhere and slaps the reader right in the face, Doug Allyn style.

Excellent, as usual
Doug Allyn is the most under rated mystery writer working today. Check out his latest, ... and you'll see what I mean.

Allyn is the best in the biz at conveying small towns, and the ruggedness of rural life, without overdoing it-- unlike so many big city types who tend to slip into satire or some "Deliverance" take off when doing small town suspense.

Great storytelling, and a GREAT ending.

White Wolf Woman: Native American Transformation Myths

An outstanding book!
White Wolf Woman And Other Native American Transformation Myths

If you love a good folktale, have an interest in shapeshifters, or would to know more about Native American culture, White Wolf Woman And Other Native American Transformation Myths is a must read. The book is divided into four parts: Snakes, Wolves, Bears, and Other Animals. Each part has an introduction that tells beliefs from several tribes.

Pijoan has compiled more than 40 myths from 30 tribes for this book. The table of contents gives the name of the myth and the tribe where it was collected. However, it must be noted that often several tribes would have a similar version of a myth. Her version is accurate for the tribe noted.

There is an introduction by Richard and Judy Dockrey Young that includes a comparison of Native American and European storytelling. It highlights the differences in their concepts of the spirit world and explains how people can shapeshift. There are several differences explained. They explain that Native Americans usually do not tell stories or sing songs just to express themselves creatively. Instead, these are their medium for transferring information and instruction to others, a means of passing along valued tradition and culture to the next generation.

A note from Teresa Pijoan follows the introduction. She recites the Navaho story of the first people and their first Hogan. She states: "The transformation of life continues daily. Many are transformed, though few of us sense the spiritual meaning of the changes. These are the Old Ones' stories, holding the magic of the land. The power of the story is in the feeling it portrays - and the passage of that feeling brings transformation."

The introduction to the first part, Snakes, is indicative of the entire book. Pijoan relates the meaning of the snake to many cultures before focusing on one tribe, the Pueblo Indians. She explains how a person that was bitten by a snake would undergo a healing ceremony before being invited to join their Snake Society. She follows the rites f passage into the society.

This is a fantastic book. It provides the entertainment of a fiction novel while providing education in culture, folklore, and history of Native Americans. I highly recommend it for persons of all ages. If you want to quiet a group of children, try reading from this book!

Wonderful Book
i have own this book for several years, given to me by my grandmother (i'm Beth's daughter, her mother gave the book to me) and i recommend it to anyone who adores hearing about the Native American stories, or wants to compare these stories to European books. A pediatrician's take
In my job as a pediatrician, I have given general counseling to families going through divorce and separation for several years, and thought that I was fairly savvy about handling these situation. However with my recent separation from my children's father, I have been shocked at how difficult even little decisions are about what to say or not say to the kids, leaving me almost paralyzed at times. This book has been a big help in laying out the issues and clarifying what is really in the kids' best interest, as opposed to the parents'. Realizing that the kids don't want or need or understand long-winded explanations makes it easier for me to talk to them about the situtaion; and being clear in my own mind on what is grown-up business vs kid business I'm hoping will help me to handle the next difficult months (and probably years) with more grace and integrity. It's an easy read with great cartoons too! Thanks, Dr. Wolf!

Incredibly helpful
I believe that intuition is a solid guide for regular day-to-day parenting, but effectively parenting kids going through a divorce calls for some professional advice.

Dr. Wolf makes some excellent points that are counter-intuitive. One that hit home the most for me was what to do when a child going through a divorce comes to a parent with untrue accusations coming straight from the other parent. ("Mom said that you guys had agreed to save money to take us to Disney World but you went and spent the money on jewelry for your girlfriend.") The natural response is to set the child straight and explain that the other parent is just angry and not telling the truth. Dr. Wolf convinced me - and I was very reluctant to believe - that the best solution is to tell the child that such issues are between Mom and Dad only and refuse to discuss it. What a relief for the child to be taken out of the middle and not have to try to decide which parent to believe. I remember how hard loyalty conflicts were for me when my parents divorced - the kids don't want to know about their parents' spending habits in the marriage or mean little things they did or did not do to each other. Dr. Wolf helped me as a new stepparent understand that keeping kids out of the middle is just more important than making sure they know the whole truth. Better for your child to suspect you probably did whatever your ex accuses you of than to be placed in the middle of an adult conflict and be forced to choose between parents.

Dr. Wolf's sample situations are VERY realistic. Here is a man who has really listened to the way kids talk and the things they get worked up about. His suggestions, which cover many common post-divorce dilemmas, make a lot of sense, and are a great help to parents going through a very difficult, emotional time and having some trouble figuring out what is really best for the children. My husband and I got a lot out of this book.

I also highly recommend "Children of Divorce: a Developmental Approach to Residence and Visitation" and "Mom's House, Dad's House."

This book is the best book ever!
This is my favorite book ever! First, because I love wolves and am fascinated by them, second I love how the author tells so accuratley what a wolf's life must be like. He gives the wolves names, just like humans have names, and tells you what the wolf's personality is, what's happening in it's life, ect. I've read this book seven or eight times and I can't get enough of it! I love this book

Life of a wolf family in story form.
This is a well written book in story form that details the social structure and the life wolf families. Although it reads like a simple story, it provides lots of good factual information. It is used in our school as the basis for a teaching unit on wolves.

Outstanding overview of the wolf itself, & its conservation
Robert Busch is considered to be among the top wolf experts, and he's created a fabulous book with _The Wolf Almanac_. He gives concise, accurate information about the wolf's anatomy & physiology, behaviors, social structure, history, evolution, and current range, as well as its role in human culture. He covers predators' roles in nature, the trapping/hunting industry, pet wolves & wolf-dog hybrids, and information about current wolf conservation efforts. Some of the hard stats he gives are out of date, since they are from 1998, and things have changed quite a bit since then, but overall, this is a great, informative book.

Busch gives many anecdotes from wolf researchers and conservationists, as well as quotes and stories from the ranching and trapping points of view. There are quite a few gorgeous full-color photos in the center portion, and many black and white photos run throughout. This is a fantastic educational tool for anyone interested in learning more about wolves and their behaviors. Nearly every facet of the wolf is covered in this book. I am a tour guide at Wolf Haven (South of Olympia, Washington,) and this book is required reading before becoming certified to give the tours - it's that good.

There are a lot of really good books out there about wolves, and this one is simply outstanding.

Awesome!!!
This is a great book!! I first checked it out of the library for a report, and realized that I just had to have my own copy. It is filled with excellent information and beautiful photos. It is quite possibly, one of my most treasured books.
