Brimming With Passion, Fury, and Intensity
In the opinion of many, Thomas Wolfe and Theodore Dreiser were two of the finest writers to emerge in the first half of the twentieth century. Dreiser interpreted contemporary events and spun them into finely crafted novels that painted a complete picture of American life in the times he lived. Wolfe, on the other hand, was a less effective story teller, but a wonderfully expressive writer--a true wordsmith from the North Carolina hills whose emotional intensity explodes in every well-turned phrase. It is said that he could never have become the literary spokesman for the disaffected generation of college writers coming of age during the Depression without the firm and guiding hand of Maxwell Perkins, his faithful editor nursing him past the troubling demons of his personal life. However, I have to wonder if Perkins caused irreparable harm by excising too much material. The recently published Starwick chapters which were purged from the original manuscript by Perkins in 1934, show the young novelist at his very best. One wonders just how much better this literary masterpiece would have been, if Wolfe's original draft (which they say filled a box the size of a coffin) had been left alone. Thomas Wolfe's passing at so young an age created a terrible void in American letters, but he inspired thousands of idealistic but unpublished authors to pursue their craft with the same mystic that he poured into every paragraph and every phrase of these majestic novels and short stories.
Vivid imagery of young Wolfe's passage through America, life
Even if you never slog all the way through this tome, you owe it to yourself to thumb through until you reach Wolfe's vivid descriptions of the following: 1. His fertile imagination fixing on small town life as his train rolls from his hometown up to Harvard 2. His description of the state of mind and body of the old men in the club car, playing cards and waxing philosophic in their cocoon of smoke and upholstered comfort 3. His self transfer into the still strong mind and emaciated body of his dying father. 4. The train. There is always the train. Behemoth. Chariot to freedom. Iron Leviathan. Taking him away from Ashmont, clinging love, bitter memory, clay, dust, dirt, flower, self. If there is any more skillful recreator of all these elements, all of these forces, in our own beings, from any age ... in any language ... please, please ... let me know

Jump On the Rollercoaster and Read.....
At 33, one time award winning screenwriter, Phil Paget, is a has-been. He hasn't worked in more than two years, is living in a garage apartment, neck-high in debt, and with an ulcer that just won't quit. So when producer, Herman Weintraub calls, he's eager to "take a lunch", and hopeful that this might be the first step on his way back up the movie industry ladder. But, Weintraub has other plans. He's gotten himself into a big jam. It seems Arnold Fischbein, Weintraub Production's comptroller, who also happens to be Herman's ex-brother in-law has gone missing, along with forty million dollars of company money, and he wants Phil to play detective and find him before the "suits" do. Phil protests that he's no detective, writing about detectives isn't the same a being a real one, but Herman will hear none of it. He's desperate, and he'll pay big-time. Being a soft touch, Phil says he'll do his best, and with the little information Weintraub's given him, sets off on what turns out to be the misadventure of a lifetime..... Aptly titled, Richard Wolf's latest novel is about to take you on One Wild Ride. This is a comical, manic thriller, full of twists, turns, and more than a few surprises that will set you on the edge of your seat, and leave you there until you finish the last page. His intense and compelling story line is filled with vivid and entertaining scenes, and his characters are well drawn and engaging. But it's Mr Wolf's crisp and witty writing, and clever, irreverent dialogue that really makes this novel stand out, and once you start reading, be prepared to finish in one sitting. You just won't be able to put this book down! With a stunning conclusion and satisfying ending to tie up all the loose ends, One Wild Ride is a great read and a mystery/thriller that shouldn't be missed. If you're new to author, Richard Wolf, be sure to read his first novel, Host To Homicide. If you're already a fan, his latest opus doesn't disappoint.
One Great Read!
This is one great read! From the get-go you're in Phil Paget's corner rooting for him. Here's this decent, well-meaning out-of-work screenwriter who can't pay the second half of last month's rent. When a stereotypical, Hollywood producer summons him to lunch, Phil is dreaming of solvency. Instead, he is cast into the dark side of Hollywood, international intrigue, and momentary love/lust. All he wants is a way out, but a cadre of magnificently drawn characters move him from one subplot of life-threatening peril to another. Who they are and what they are after will keep you turning the pages. The characters crackle off the page and the suspense and fast pace keep you from putting the book down. That's one wild ride in itself. Additionally, Wolf's tongue-in-cheek treatment gives this story a totally different spin. It's a unique reading experience. Enjoy!

An Eye-Opener
I've always harbored a subconscious guilt whenever I thought about wolves in North America...I knew we'd trumped-up the danger they presented to us, in order to rid the wilderness of their threat to our fat, stupid livestock. Meanwhile we systematically slaughtered their age-old prey, leaving them to starve or become criminals. The clear, poignant and often beautiful writings collected in this book helped me understand consciously what that universal guilt is...and what I feel I must do to redeem my part in it. I must support programs to preserve what Wilderness is left, and return to it the species we have so ruthlessly extirpated. (Wait 'till you read what we did! And for how long! Yipes!) And while teaching me all this, John A. Murray reminded me how wonderful a writer, say, Aldo Leopold is...or introduced me to Edward Hoagland (WOW...thought he was a painter or something. He sure can write!) or Farley Mowat (Knew he wrote. Never knew how well!) Well worth reading!
A great collection of contemporary writings on wolves.
Out Among the Wolves combines writings from some of the best known contemporary writers on wolves in one book. Every essay combines facts with great writing. I recommend this book to anyone who wants to know more about wolves, for the love of them, or knowledge
A Parents' Guide to the Montessori Classroom

Excellent Description of the Method and Actual Activities
This is a concise explanation of what your child will be doing at the school. It explains how the teacher explains the materials to the child and how the child then takes over to learn by herself. Also indicates other resources and where to find them. Very good if you want to find out what is Montessori and what your child will actually be doing all day.
Parents, Get Your Hands on It!
I am a mother of a 3-year-old-to-be who is going to a Montessori preschool in three months. Upon enrollment, we received this book from the school. It is wonderful! Mainly focusing on the classroom for the 3-6 years old, it shows all the materials used for this age group with pictures of children actually working with each! It gives us a much clear idea of what and how my daughter is going to learn in her preschool. It explains very clearly how each material will be used in the classroom and how the "class" will be functioning. I believe it is a MUST READ for all parents, because it helps to understand so much about the teaching/learning at Montessori schools. I am ordering more copies for my family and friends!
It also can be a good picture book to prepare children who are going to be in a Montessori school. It has become my daughter's favorite "bedtime story" book! She was objecting the idea of leaving mom and home for preschool. Now she is very excited to see "her school" in the book with children just like her "playing" with all different kinds of "toys". She now asks me "Can I go to school now?" "Will I be playing with these too?"... I am sure when she finally walks into her classroom for the first time, she will be much more comfortable because she has "known" something about her school for quite a while.

I wish my son would stop asking for Peter's Trucks...
I renewed this book from the library so often that I bought our own copy. The clincher was watching my 28-month old sit on the floor and turn each page, reciting all the lines. The reviews don't do justice to this charming story with fun illustrations.
WE LOVE TRUCKS!
"Peter finds trucks wherever he goes" and so will you when you read this fun book. As an educational tool, it can help with learning to rhyme and increasing memory skills! My two year old can recite the contents of each truck after I prompt him with the description. We always take extra time at the ice cream truck to pretend we are eating ice cream from the truck!

A Lovely story.
You can always trust Joan Wolf to give you a good story. The usual guardian-ward romance but written with such consummate skill , it turns out to be so beautiful, touching and heart-warming. I just love it.
Hard to imagine a plot like this can be done a better way...
The prologue alone is worth the money. The suspense is so cleverly done that merely peeking at the last page wouldn't give the answer. I was caught and "fooled" until the very last moment. And the way everything gets wrapped up is really satisfactory.

Helping wolves
I believe this is a cause for restoration. This book made me believe that the wolf should be released in to the Adriondack mountians. It also had me believing that the ecosystem needs the wolves to survive. I was especially fascinated by Kristen Deboer's idea of creating corridors between parks in Canada ans the northeast, to help creat migratrion routes for animals. I believet he book itself aswell was ans informative, great, intertaining read.
Wol Restoration in the east
The Return of the Wolf is an eye-opener as it gives four very distinct and honest evaluations of the possibility of our northeastern forest communities welcoming the timber wolf back to it's native haunts. Let us not confuse the eastern coyote which has hybridized with the eastern wolf as the as the easts top canid predator.....The wolf, just as in Yellowstone and Minnesota is the true predator of the moose , Caribou Elk and Beaver. The coyote, even if hybridized with wolf genes is still not a large enough creature(maximum of 70 pounds whereas the true timber wolf can be 100-150 pounds)to bring down the northeasts growing moose population and hopefully one day a restored caribou herd. Let the voice of Rick Bass,Kristen DeBoer and Bill McKibben weigh heavy.......let us set aside the lands, educate the "Little Red Riding Hood" believers and politic effectively with the state house representatives who tend to buckle to the pressure of corporations who favor short term extraction versus long term sustainability. Give the wolves the chance to push the coyotes to their rightful "fringe" of the forest allowing the true timber wolf and restored(hopefully) Cougar to stand atop the food chain as top predators of the land. Our forests have returned after 400 years of being chopped and burned.Let us stop the shopping malls and second home developments from destroying our wonderful open lands.Let the land be restored to it's glory and allow the current residents of the backwoods to continue their sustainable forestry and wsoodcraft busines while reaping some benefits from a contrulled and managed Ecotourism. What a great thing for us to have the pomeans and will to return and restore our woodlands in the most populated part of the U.S. to their former majesty. We can be a model for the conservative western United States and the emerging 3rd world countries to emulate......The Return of the Wolf speaks of all of these things and more........Fantastic writing! Rivals Charles Little storytelling in the "Dying of the trees". Please pass on to a friend.......Let the restoration of the north woods begin!

Excellent Book on WW II Africa
I have read quite a few works on the North African campaign of World War II, and Wolf Heckmann's "Rommel's War in Africa" is one of the best. This well written book is a pleasure to read for both the casual enthusiast and a more researched reader. Heckmann thoroughly and honestly explores both sides of the war, from both the allied and axis sides, which is quite refreshing, as most works are very Anglo-orientated about North Africa. I would confidently recommend this book to anyone looking to learn more about World War II.
The best book on the subject for the german side
The author uses sources and personal accounts from both sides to give the most balanced account of this interesting campaign I have ever encountered. One of the very few books on the subject to take an unbiased look at Rommel's generalship, recounting both his genius and his flaws. I cannot overemphasize how worthwhile I found this work.

Great book
Stella and her mom find out that one of the newly introduced wolves has been killed. By a gunshot wound. This means that someone is hunting where they aren't supposed to be. Will Stella and her mom find out who before it's too late?
A great story about the love of animals
The book is about a 9 yr old girl named Stella who helps her mother and aunt Anya in a variety of animal situations. She must help rescue a piglet from a well, perform surgery on a goldfish, help vaccinate cattle, treat a colt who was bitten by a rattlesnake and rescue wolf pups after Romeo, the Wolf Cubs father is killed by hunters. This is a book that keeps you interested with all the many things the girl and her family go through with the animals. It teaches many things about a variety of animals. It has such a compassionate depth from all the characters, it brings to heart an inner urgency to help the animals you come in contact with. It is enjoyable and very well written for all ages. I felt the content was a little much for the younger advanced reader, but it never would scare them.
