Ancient Monuments of the Mississippi Valley (Classics in Smithsonian Anthropology)

THE Primary Source for Moundbuilder Information
Ancient Monuments (more familiarly known as "Squire and Davis") is the undisputed primary reference source on Indian mounds in the eastern US till the mid-1800s. While there were a few others (such as Caleb Atwater's book), Squire and Davis offers the grandest illustrations of what remained of the unbelievable civilizations that inhabited this continent. Even as they published in 1848, hundreds of mounds were being plowed into oblivion; so few are still extant that theirs is the only guide to what was lost. The text is enjoyable on many levels, and can be forgiven for any lapses of scientific accuracy. They trekked over Ohio at a time when we weren't even sure who made the mounds, so everything they recorded is gold. The engineering prowess, the sheer magnificence and scale of some of the works, is astounding.

The Antiquities of Asia: A Translation With Notes of Book II of the Library of History of Diodorus Siculus
Published in Hardcover by Transaction Pub (1989)
Authors: Edwin William Murphy and Siculus Diodorus
Amazon base price: $49.95
Used price: $34.00

A felicitous and accurate translation, with wonderful notes.
It's a shame that Diodorus Siculus isn't as well known to the reading public as Herodotus or Thucydides, for his compendius Library of History, of which this is a translation of volume II (on Assyria, Scythia, India, Arabia, and other ancient Asiatic kingdoms). Diodorus is the only ancient historian, for example, who has his facts straight about the fall of the Assyrian Empire. This is a great translation, long over due, and belongs in the library of all who are interested in ancient History. The notes alone are worth the price of the book, and the plates are keyed to the text to make it come alive

The Antiquities of Egypt: A Translation With Notes of Book I of the Library of History of Diodorus Siculus
Published in Hardcover by Transaction Pub (1990)
Author: Edwin Murphy
Amazon base price: $49.95
Collectible price: $90.00

By far the best modern traslation of this key work on Egypt.
This is a modern translation, expertly and interestingly annotated, and wonderfully illustrated, of the first volume of the Library of History by Diodorus Siculus. Diodorus was a Greek historian who visited Egypt in the time of Caesar and wrote about the wonderful things he saw and learned there...the history, laws, customs, geography, flora, and fauna, as well as myth and religion. This fine translation is meant to introduce the modern reader to a historian who equalled or excelled Herodotus in his researches. Volume II, The Antiquities of Asia, is also available from the same publisher, and Murphy has outdone himself in translating and commenting on this one as well. Both volumes have good indexes, glossaries, and bibliographies. They are excellent

Visually memorable
Edwin Lundie loved to use heavy, visible timbers in his designs of country houses and cabins. And he loved to use warm, earthy color tones, custom-made hardware and rough-hewn, rustic fireplaces and chimneys.

The result is soothing, comfortable and visually memorable.

His city houses have a storybook quality, evoking early New England. Interiors of these houses are lighter, more formal and delicate than those of his country houses, but there still are rustic elements in brick, stone, wrought iron and hand carved wood.

You can see all of this in The Architecture of Edwin Lundie, a lovely book filled with color photography and Edwin Lundie's skilful drawings.

A Steal at Twice the Price!
This book, like Arts and Crafts Houses II, covers only three houses, in this case William Morris's Red House (designed by Phillip Webb), William Richard Lethaby's Melsetter House, and Sir Edward Luteyns' Goddards, but it covers them beautifully and thoroughly. There are site plans, floor plans, elevations, beautiful black and white photos and stunning color photos, significant introductory essays, and lists of references. This is a beautiful book at an amazing price.

How does one Rate Prayers of a devout Holy Man?
To one of his more recent students in classes and lectures at Columbia Seminary, Prof Bruegge is already a Living Legend! In the beginning of every class there is his personal, inspired prayer to the "One Who Listens; Yahweh; Holy God; Giver of all our years; You, the God of Truth; You, You, You..."

Lately, in his OT Survey, I wrote a few snatches of his opening addresses to: "You, You, You giver of Life; You who are the One Sovereign Judge, King, Lawyer, Counselor...O God as we watch powers rise and fall, We watch ourselves, we watch and see the World. You who comes late and sometimes soon... Come quickly Lord Jesus!"

My thoughts often return to his opening prayers in every class. My wish for all of last year: "Why does not someone publish them?" So now we have many of them. From 1976: "You are the voice we can scarely hear..." From 1992, "Healing sovereign God, overmatch our resistant ears..." How many sparkling ways that he creatively addresses the Living Personal God! In these few weeks I have used this Jewel of Prayers, I have been particularly struck by the first group: "And then you; You...and therefore us; For how you hope; The other side of the street; Our true home." The second section that I have re-read is "A people with many secrets," and the 11th one, "The God we would rather have."

Dedicated to "a long stream of treasured colleagues of 25 years at Eden Theological Seminary and 17 years at Columbia...with thanks and appreciation." When I purchased this treasure in the School's Book Store, I first saw it in the hands of one of his friends from the Seminary Offices. Now the one who prays to the "Liberator, Redeemer, Emancipator..." will continue to be the one I know who includes his students in his caring compassion!

Best paperback English/Spanish dictionary I've seen
This is the best paperback English/Spanish dictionary I've seen in many years of studying Spanish. It has good coverage of idiomatic expressions, and does a very good job of indicating regional differences in the meanings of words in different South/Central/North American countries. Occasionally it has words that are lacking in my huge cloth-bound English/Spanish dictionary.

The Classic Work on Bark and Skin Craft
All modern students of bark and skin boats begin with this book. The intial work on the native watercraft of North America.

While the book does not cover the watercraft of all North American First Nations, it does provide a broad range of information on craft from many Nations across the continent.

This book is highy recommended to anyone interested in the history of canoes or kayaks as developed on the North American continent.
