Could Not Stop Reading
What a great book! I am anxious to read it a second and third time. I really felt like I had been in the Klondike during the stampede after reading this book. At the very least, I now have a second hand knowledge about the experiences that the sourdoughs went through.

Excellent details.
I recommend first reading Pierre Berton's book about the Klondike Gold Rush to get an excellent and accurate overview of what happened.

Then read Tappan Adney's book to get lots of wonderful details about everything concerning the stampeder's life. Details such as how big his log cabin was, what was in it, how he lived, and so forth -- the interesting details of the gold rush and the stampeder's life. Also included are some of Adney's photos of the gold rush.

REVIEW
It was very inspiring...life all of a sudden had a greater meanin

A wonderful source from a sage healer
I was blessed to meet Mary Jo in St. Francisville, Louisiana several years ago at her book signing, and she did a reading for me that has had some remarkable long range implications. I keep her book on my quick reference shelf (I am an energy healer) and find it useful for my work as well as working with others' issues.

Thank you, Mary Jo!

The lineman's and cableman's handbook

for all time - the Lineman's Bible
This book was first printed in 1928, well after the trade first put on climbers. Since it's first printing it has been THE textbook for the lineman's trade. It has been used in virtually every apprentice program and was the companion of self taught linehands from the '30s on. Frequently updated, it remains the one place a linehand, beginner to veteran, can go for help. It has progressed with the technology of the trade, the regulations and codes, the materials, and the processes for doing very dangerous work in well thought out procedures that enable electric customers to maintain their service and even be unaware of the work of the power lineman.

Excellent reference for Journeymen and apprentices.
This book is THE comprehensive guide that no Line man should be without. It is also an excellent source of information for anyone working with distribution and/or transmission system operation, construction, and maintenance.

The Truth Behind "The Lower Depths"
The central theme of "The Lower Depths" is not only the total aniquilation of human personality by misery,in the harsh struggle for life that,so many times takes Men to degrade themselves but also,a statement that that aniquilation never is complete and that the very "Ex-Men",like in another book Gorki will call them, still have a conscience, the dream to overcome misery itself,a human warmth capable of being shared and ease.

A Must-read!

good Russian play
In a crowded dark room live the dregs of Russian society: a thief, a prostitute, her pimp, and several other criminals and outcasts. The general humdrum drama of their lives goes on as they get into fights, have disagreements, counsel one another over their losses, and so on.

Luka, an idealistic spiritual sort, finds his way into the group, and starts to spread his message of hope and positive thinking. This spurs the plot along a bit, because many in the group are hard-bitten realists who have no truck with faith or hope.

This is a fine play by Maxim Gorky. Gorky doesn't have the number of famous plays that someone like Henrik Ibsen or George Bernard Shaw does. In fact, he might be better known for his memoir of his childhood than for this play.

Nevertheless, The Lower Depths is a great play. The gritty element described in the play makes it seem much more like a modern play than the 1902 publication date would indicate. The realistic dialogue and streetwise characters make it hard to put down.

An essential tool for every household!
Managing Your Health Care is an essential tool for every household! It is very well written and reader friendly. It allows you to walk away with confidence that you have the necessary health care reference to guide you through any illness that you or a loved one may encounter. It serves as a navigator, step by step, through the overwhelming task of managing your own health care. It places much of the responsibility in your hands and allows you to find comfort in feeling in control of your own health care, and not at the mercy of your doctors. This book has been passed around to friends and family since I bought it. It seems everyone wants to share this message with someone else. I would like to extend a thank you to the authors for providing the public with such an essential tool!

Well researched and founded history
Some of us go to the bookstore and seek out the history section and browse the displayed titles. History entice us, it shows our past and tells about the mistakes repeated time and again. Maybe, for some of us it is able to tell a warning or two.

History seems to me a most dangerous field to write in. Especially when in the case of this material, the concrete facts are so small and insignificant and what may or may not be the real answers to a lot of questions are buried by time and dust. One will perhaps never know what Mangas Coloradas did in his first life-years, historian Sweeney means he has found a good answer and presents it to the reader but he doesn't claim it to be the sole answer, he says it's possible. This is the respect every historian should have to his/her audience.

Of course, it's not only Mangas' first years that are lost in obscurity. Official mexican and spanish papers tell only half the story of his people, but Sweeney is extraordinary in his ability to sow a thorough and well founded history of this remarkable and gargantuan statesman. It also seems from the book's voluminous notes that Sweeney has been everywhere to find the tinyest bits of information.

All this makes noone wonder he has written his finest piece yet on the Apachean-Mexican/American relations.

The Greatest Chief
Before Geronimo, before Cochise, there was Mangas. Mangas Coloradas "red sleeves" is a facinating read. Having grown up in Apacheria I knew of Mangas. In fact I lived, and have relatives, at Apache Tejo, where he met his demise. If you want to truly understand what led up to the American/Indian wars of the late 1800's, and why they occurred, then this is a must read. It is written exquisitely. My only regret is that there weren't more maps to help show where the various battle sites were. A 5-star rating for a wonderful book. This one I'm keeping.

Truth Teller
Edwin Louis Cole hits hard, but it's out of love that he does. he encourages men to be men and with a great deal of integrity and love, and he challenges to lay down the idols and images which our culture presents as their perceptions of manhood. Coming directly from a biblical point of view, he shows what it is to be man to the max. And I would encourage every man to get a copy of this book and be challenged!! I was.

A Serious Call For Real Manhood
Society has exalted a view of man that is not only destroying only men but their wives, their children and their communities as well. Mr. Cole hits the very center of the issue and he does not fear in doing so. Being a real man is being like Jesus Christ. I was surprised to see that the book was first published in 1982 and that I only got to read a copy only now after 18 years. Yet I have never been so impacted by a book so much that it moves me to change. I am a Bible believing Christian and yet I would place this book immediately after the Bible as a practical manual on how to live daily as a real God-fearing man. It sets Biblical principles against the current ideas and lifestyles of men and addresses each issue clearly to allow the reader to have a better if not the best option to be renewed and revitalized. It's not a new book, but the truths explained in it are timeless and powerful.

Merejildo Grijalva: Apache Captive: Army Scout (Southwestern Studies Series, No. 96)

Highly recommended for western history buffs and students.
Merejildo Grijalva was an Indian Scout who was captured by the Chiricahua Apaches in 1849 and lived more than a decade among the people under such renowned Native American leaders as Miguel Narbona, Mangas Coloradas, and Cochise. Indeed, it was Cochise who used Grijalva as his interpreter in the late 1850s. In 1859, Apache agent Michael Steck encouraged Grijalva to escape the Apaches and two years later aided the American army working in the New Mexico Territory and out of Fort Bowie, Arizona. Edwin Sweeney's Merejildo Grijalva: Apache Captive, Army Scout is number 96 in the University of Texas at El Paso Southwestern Studies series and a work of impeccable scholarship that will be much appreciated by students of Native American studies and western frontier history.

Merejildo Grijalva
I think this is just a wonderful book, not only because we have the same last name, but the name of Grijalva goes back into history, like Juan de Grijalva 1518 explorer, Juan Pablo Grijalva, with the 1775/76 Anza Expedtion. You have to read this book yourself to understand what Edwin R. Sweeney wrote in this book.

Netsuke: Japanese Life and Legend in Miniature
Published in Hardcover by Charles E Tuttle Co (1991)
Author: Edwin C. Symmes
Amazon base price: $49.95
Used price: $3.68

Lovely images, informative text - great introduction!
Between the introductory text and the stories attached to each picture, this book serves to both educate and whet the appetite. I struggled with the desire to own each of the pieces that Symmes so lovingly photographed.

Visual Masterpiece for the Netsuke Enthusiast
Symmes does a wonderful job of composing this text. He gives a nice history of netsuke, covering the span of time from feudal Japan to the present. He includes a small section on netsuke manufacture, and another on photographic techniques for macro photography and design, and then the text opens into a wonderful collection of full-page photographs of several varied and incredible pieces, some dating back to the seventeenth century. He includes brief descriptions of the netsuke, although he could have elaborated on the Japanese (and Chinese) fables that inspired many of these creations for Western audiences. Many of the pieces in this book are available today in reproduction form, and the netsuke are composed of several different materials, not just the "typical" ivory or wood. This text is a must have for any collector, beginning or advanced, as it will inspire readers to research their private collections as well as create the desire to build them! The reproduction of detail from the photographs is amazing!

a superb resource
One of the problems of so many texts aimed at E.S.L. students is that they use only material from the country of publication. This book draws on so many diverse sources for its passages, including some from the countries of origin of many of those students. What could be better? Although many of the passages are just parts of the overall work (e.g., not all of a Shakespearean play), they are wonderful selections showing a great diversity of literature. Bravo to McRae and Vethamani for coming up with such a brilliant idea (in the British sense of brilliant) and producing this most interesting book.

Great Academic Book
A must read for students of ELT. Provides great hints and techniques for teaching of literature. A major difference from other books and definately a plus point is the extensive use of Asian literature in the book.
